Security experts, Civil society groups , ex service officers kick against licencing guns to members of the public

The statement by the Zamfara State government urging the commissioner of police in the state to issue gun license to individuals to protect themselves in the state has been condemned by security experts, civil society groups and other members of the members who have knowledge of security architecture in the countr

Read below thier reactions.

Reactions to Gun license by Zamfara State govt/ way out of the security challenges in the country

For me, is not particularly a strategic idea. Gun laws is something that should be thought through before it is eventually provided to the citizens as an access. So I believe that if you have to issue such directive without adequate strategic plan, you might just be creating anarchy in the state. You can recall since 2007, that there has been an embargo on the issuance of gun licence. Security is not about armament, It is about human capital development. It is about intelligence gathering more than self defence. In trying to create this solution of arming citizens to protect themselves, we might be creating new and emerging problems that will confront the state. Two things will likely happen. There will be emergence of new gangs who will have access to arms, people who will be doing gun running and stockpiling. Secondly, we will have a consortium of new conflict merchants. The state should design a more robust approach instead of Issuing a blanket approach to carry arms. Even those countries that have such laws are trying to regulate it. I think it is a collosal failure on the part of the state to create such decision. The way out is to invest in human capital, human transmission, social development. If those things are carefully and coordinately done, the tendencies are that we might have a level of de escalation. What the road map for recovery? There must be a road map that has exhausted the potentials of safety and security. The state needs to look at experience in the southwest where the government created a kind of informal policing system. How can they borrow lessons from them, bring community into policing. There should be investment in intelligence and informal policing system and gun carrying should the last option to go for. -------- Mr. Salaudeen Hashim Programme Manager CIVil Society Legislative Centre CISLAC

It shows the failure of government in that state. What has the government been doing with the security votes he has been getting? Telling people to get gun to protect themselves in a volatile area like the north is giving people permission to use gun against one another at the slightest provocation. It will increase the killing of innocent people and lead to human rights abuse and deat

The way out of the insecurity in that state,is for the government to properly equipp the police and the military. They should engage in intelligence gathering. The military need modern day equipment, gadgets to confront these terrorists likewise the police. They need to recruit committed ex service men, vigilante members and young men to work with the military and the police. ----- Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile. Security analyst/ Human Right Activist.

Issuing guns to members of the public for self protection has never been done in Nigeria so the idea is funny and not a welcome development . Rather , community policing and motivation for the security personnel will up security in that state. Security operatives need to be properly motivated and equipped. They need life insurance policy. They need to know that their families will be taken care of when they lay Thier lives for the safety of others. The people must be part of the security architecture, provide job for the youth and cater for the children of deceased person's so that they will not be led to fend for themselves by joining the terrorists----- Dr. Israel Ameh Security exper

State police is the way out. We can continue to shy away from it. Let each state has its own policemen and let the governor be the chief security officer. That is the best thing for the security of our country. They need to cater for Police and military men. Thier welfare when they are serving and after they leave the Force should be well catered for. Training and retraining of officers should be done when necessary. Allowing people to own guns will be counterproductive in the nearest future. It can work now but eventually, it will be abused ------ Ex. police office

Looking at the level of killing going on that state, the killing there has become unbearable and we cannot continue like that. By and large , there is a law banning individuals from owing arms in the country and the state has to go through the national assembly. Security challenges can be tackled if the military, the secret police and police employ intelligence gathering. Our security agencies should do more. ----- Mr. Amali Amali, CEO Cenetric Security

UNODC World Drug Report 2022 shows sharp rise in illicit drug peddling, use among women, young people

Women and young people have been identified as the most vulnerable users of illicit drug abuse in the world.

This was contained in the report released on Monday  highlighting trends on cannabis post-
legalization, environmental impacts of illicit drugs, and drug use among
women and youth

The treatment gap remains large for women globally.

Although women represent almost one in two Amphetamines users, they constitute only one in five people in treatment for amphetamine use disorders. The World Drug Report 2022 also spotlights the wide range of roles fulfilled by women in the global
cocaine economy, including cultivating coca, transporting small quantities of drugs, selling to consumers,
and smuggling into prisons. Ongoing gender treatment gap and disparities in drug use and treatment
Women remain in the minority of drug users globally yet tend to increase their rate of drug consumption
and progress to drug use disorders more rapidly than men do. Women now represent an estimated 45-49
per cent of users of amphetamines and non-medical users of pharmaceutical stimulants, pharmaceutical
opioids, sedatives, and tranquilizers.Young people are using more drugs, with use levels today in
many countries higher than with the previous generation. In Africa and Latin America, people under 35
represent the majority of people being treated for drug use disorders.

The 2022 World Drug Report provides a global overview of the supply and demand of opiates, cocaine,
cannabis, amphetamine-type stimulants and new psychoactive substance.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC)’s World Drug Report 2022 further shows accelerated daily use and related health impacts, according to
manufacturing of cocaine, the expansion of synthetic drugs to new markets, and continued gaps in the availability of drug treatments, especially for women.
According to the report, around 284 million people aged 15-64 used drugs worldwide in 2020, a 26 per
cent increase over the previous decade. Young people are using more drugs, with use levels today in
many countries higher than with the previous generation. In Africa and Latin America, people under 35
represent the majority of people being treated for drug use disorders.

Globally, the report estimates that 11.2 million people worldwide were injecting drugs. Around half of this
number were living with hepatitis C, 1.4 million were living with HIV, and 1.2 million were living with both.
Reacting to these findings, UNODC Executive Director Ghada Waly stated: “Numbers for the
manufacturing and seizures of many illicit drugs are hitting record highs, even as global emergencies are
deepening vulnerabilities. At the same time, misperceptions regarding the magnitude of the problem and
the associated harms are depriving people of care and treatment and driving young people towards
harmful behaviours. We need to devote the necessary resources and attention to addressing every
aspect of the world drug problem, including the provision of evidence-based care to all who need it, and
we need to improve the knowledge base on how illicit drugs relate to other urgent challenges, such as
conflicts and environmental degradation.”
The report further emphasizes the importance of galvanizing the international community, governments,
civil society and all stakeholders to take urgent action to protect people, including by strengthening drug
use prevention and treatment and by tackling illicit drug supply.

Early indications and effects of cannabis legalization

Cannabis legalization in North America appears to have increased daily cannabis use, especially potent
cannabis products and particularly among young adults. Associated increases in people with psychiatric
disorders, suicides and hospitalizations have also been reported. Legalization has also increased tax
revenues and generally reduced arrest rates for cannabis possession.
Continued growth in drug production and trafficking
Cocaine manufacture was at a record high in 2020, growing 11 per cent from 2019 to 1,982 tons. Cocaine
seizures also increased, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, to a record 1,424 tons in 2020. Nearly 90 per
cent of cocaine seized globally in 2021 was trafficked in containers and/or by sea. Seizure data suggest
that cocaine trafficking is expanding to other regions outside the main markets of North America and
Europe, with increased levels of trafficking to Africa and Asia .

Trafficking of methamphetamine continues to expand geographically, with 117 countries reporting
seizures of methamphetamine in 2016‒2020 versus 84 in 2006‒2010. Meanwhile, the quantities of
methamphetamine seized grew five-fold between 2010 and 2020.
Opium production worldwide grew seven per cent between 2020 and 2021 to 7,930 tons ‐ predominantly
due to an increase in production in Afghanistan. However, the global area under opium poppy cultivation
fell by 16 per cent to 246,800 ha in the same period.
Key drug trends broken down by region
In many countries in Africa and South and Central America, the largest proportion of people in treatment
for drug use disorders are there primarily for cannabis use disorders. In Eastern and South-Eastern
Europe and in Central Asia, people are most often in treatment for opioid use disorders.
In the United States and Canada, overdose deaths, predominantly driven by an epidemic of the non-
medical use of fentanyl, continue to break records. Preliminary estimates in the United States point to
more than 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021, up from nearly 92,000 in 2020.
In the two largest markets for methamphetamine, seizures have been increasing ‐ they rose by seven per
cent in North America from the previous year, while in South-East Asia they increased by 30 per cent
from the previous year, record highs in both regions. A record high was also reported for
methamphetamine seizures reported from South-West Asia, increasing by 50 per cent in 2020 from 2019.
Great inequality remains in the availability of pharmaceutical opioids for medical consumption. In 2020,
there were 7,500 more doses per 1 million inhabitants of controlled pain medication in North America than
in West and Central Africa.
Conflict zones as magnets for synthetic drug production
This year’s report also highlights that illicit drug economies can flourish in situations of conflict and where
the rule of law is weak, and in turn can prolong or fuel conflict.
Information from the Middle East and South-East Asia suggest that conflict situations can act as a magnet
for the manufacture of synthetic drugs, which can be produced anywhere. This effect may be greater
when the conflict area is close to large consumer markets.
Historically, parties to conflict have used drugs to finance conflict and generate income. The 2022 World
Drug Report also reveals that conflicts may also disrupt and shift drug trafficking routes, as has happened
in the Balkans and more recently in Ukraine.
A possible growing capacity to manufacture mamphetamine in Ukraine if the conflict persists
There was a significant increase in the number of reported clandestine laboratories in Ukraine,
skyrocketing from 17 dismantled laboratories in 2019 to 79 in 2020. 67 out of these laboratories were
producing amphetamines, up from five in 2019 ‐ the highest number of dismantled laboratories reported
in any given country in 2020.

The environmental impacts of drug
 markets

Illicit drug markets, according to the 2022 World Drug Report, can have local, community or individual-
level impacts on the environment. Key findings include that the carbon footprint of indoor cannabis is
between 16 and 100 times more than outdoor cannabis on average and that the footprint of 1 kilogram of
cocaine is 30 times greater than that of cocoa beans.
Other environmental impacts include substantial deforestation associated with illicit coca cultivation,
waste generated during synthetic drug manufacture that can be 5-30 times the volume of the end product,
and the dumping of waste which can affecting soil, water and air directly, as well as organisms, animals
and the food chain indirectly.

In this interview with Patience Ogbo, he talked about arts, governance, the forthcoming general election and security in the country.

Your take on arts and its value to the practitioners and the country

People do not value art because they are blind. There is no way you can be anything without making imagination and creativity your bedrock and that is why, if care is not taken, our development will be so dragged and you will wish if we are truly in this planet . People who are advancing and developing, made art their bedrock. The Arts profession like other things has its ups and its downs. Its ups are to let you know that you have more to do. The down is to let you know that you are not doing something right so you have to figure a better way to do it that is how I see it generally.

Your suggestion to government in making arts bedrock for development of the country.

I don’t know if I want to suggest anything to the government because we have been suggesting a lot and have not been quiet about it. You see, charity begins at home. Those who are in government came from their homes. I don’t expect anything different per se when they get to government. When from their homes, they have been taught that arts is fetish, somebody who does not understand art, whose religion tells him that art is idolatry, is a fetish thing , how do you expect something different when he gets into government? So telling government to do anything is a waste of time when they do not believe in it in the first place. Individual should keep trying their best and maybe, when they see the efforts that people have made, something may ginger them. For instance, there has been a lot of artists who have brought accolades to the country , successes from international world , like Prof. Wole Soyinka for instance is a Nobel laureate , on what importance does that mean to the people in government ? There has been a lot of artists who have made impacts using their works to bring glory to the country what has been done for them?

Your art Gallery and culture.

My art gallery goes beyond art. It is more of a centre where people can come and find a niche for themselves. It is more of an art and cultural centre because a lot of activities go on there like for instance, we are engaged in poetry, drama, musicals and all sorts of things that is cultural and artistic. So it is more of a place where people can come and learn about their history, whatever is bedeviling their progress and how to find a solution to their would have been problems.

Insecurity in the country and the Owo Catholic Church killing.

I know one thing for sure is that security is the duty of everybody to play their role but providing security is a duty for some as they have taken the oath to secure lives and properties. Those are the ones saddled with the responsibility and that is how it is everywhere. I will still emphasize that security is the duty of everyone. If you see something, say something. About the Owo Catholic Church killing, why do we allow it to continue to happen? That we do not know that it will happen again? That we do not know that those that are doing it has not relate on it? If care is not taken, another one will happen. Who are those behind this? And what are they trying to gain?

Your take on the forthcoming election

You see, my take of that is we are still not yet in a democratic mode. I hate it when ethnic and religious sentiments become the determinant factors for who may rule us and who may not rule us. Personally, I don’t have any issue whether or not a Christian Christian, or Muslim Muslim Nigerians rule us, but the question is are these people competent. Are we doing it based on the sentiment of what? What is this all about? I don’t know? But the bottom-line is , somebody has to be elected. Will the person be elected based on religious sentiment or ethno-centric phenomenon I don’t go for that. I am interested in who is competent and can get the job done. What is their track record? What are they to offer? Are they going to be able to take care of issues that are bedeviling us? Are they equipped to take care of the issue of corruption, issues of poverty, all of that? Are they ready to take care of that? Is not all about muslim-muslim, Christian-Christian , to me it just shown that we have not matured enough democratically. We are just beating about the bush and pretending that we are practicing democracy. That is not the way democracy should be based. Democracy should be based on issues, bordering on people’s affairs and ensuring that people are getting the best for their lives. I always say the average Nigeria lives one over hundred if not even more than that of the fullness of their lives because nobody really cares. Those in office are there for what is in it for them so in the process, they mortgage the lives of these innocent citizens and short-live them. It does not matter to me as long as we can sit them down, scrutinize them and ask questions that they truly know what they are doing and be ready to dance to the tune of what the people need or is it another political jacaranda?

One of your experiences that is indelible.

It was the day that CNN interviewed me. Little did I understand that I was being interviewed by CNN( Cable Network News) when one of the staff came to whisper to me that I am the first Nigerian artist to be interviewed on CNN. This was on November 1992, and it was aired on January 3rd 1993. That was elating. Although there are several others that I am happy about. There is reason to be grateful what I have achieved in my career.

Advice for upcoming young artists.

Taking arts as a profession is not easy but in the same vein, show me what is easy. It shows that there are peculiarities in art and I advise the younger generation to imbibe discipline and make patience and consistency their watchwords. You cannot say because you need money you do what you are not supposed to do. Patience is, you may not have today, and you will have tomorrow. You need to understand that whatever you are doing has gestation period. You have to wait for your own time to come. If you have these three qualities, you will definitely be successful in life.

More than 280 million people around the world used drugs in 2020 -----UNODC Executive Director.

Dr. Ghada Waly, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime UNODC is

calling for a more determined efforts to stop the use of illicit drugs and bring help to those in dire need.

Dr. Waly stated this as his message on the International Day Against Abuse and illicit Trafficking.

He said ‘’The harms of illicit drug use can affect anyone, but they often have the deepest impact on

those in crisis. The pandemic undermined physical and mental health, strained healthcare systems, and

disrupted drug treatment and services. Instability from Ukraine to Afghanistan to Africa and beyond has

increased the number of people in need of emergency assistance. The industry of illicit drugs continues

to ramp up during these challenging times’’

Speaking on the increasing number of illicit drug use around the world, Dr. Waly said ‘’In 2020, more

than 280 million people around the world used drugs. Seizures of synthetic drugs have multiplied in the

last ten years, while the opioid crisis in North America claims more lives every day, and non-medical use

of tramadol continues to endanger people in Africa and the Middle East. Even as we work for long-term,

sustainable solutions, there are people who need urgent access to treatment and care, now.

We need to reach those who are most difficult to reach, because they need us the most: people in

refugee camps and humanitarian settings; people at risk of being left behind as a result of the pandemic;

and people facing barriers of stigma and discrimination. Women are among the foremost victims of

conflict and crisis, and they often face greater barriers to treatment for drug use disorders. In some

parts of the world, the proportion of women among treated patients is below ten per cent. We need to

ensure access to care for all, including in emergencies. We also need to ensure that controlled medicines

are available for pain relief around the world, and in humanitarian settings’’

He added that the UN Office on Drugs and Crime is committed to providing care and support to the

people affected by illicit drugs, no matter the circumstances. Stating that everyone has a role to play,

from governments to civil society to individuals, in bringing the necessary attention and resources to this

issue, and we stand ready to work with all of you.

‘’Let us show those who need us that we care, by providing the care that they need in these times of

Teachers brutalise pupils for watching them have S*x in school toilet.

The Juvenile Welfare Centre of the Igando police station have arrested a male and female teacher of a private school in Lagos were for allegedly brutalising two pupils age 2 and 4 years old for watching them during a sex act in the school toilet.

According to the Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ( ACVPN ) , stated " "The  notorious male teacher and female teacher both were caught red handed in the School toilet by a primary 4 female student . According to the report we received the student who couldn't hide her displeasure told her fellow students what she witnessed. The female teacher caught with her fellow male teacher pounced on the eyewitness, beat her up mercilessly. As if that was not enough the school management did same by subjecting the eyewitness to all forms of humiliation precisely 14th of June 2022.
ACVPN while lamenting the alleged poor handling of the situation by the school stated
" Report also has it that yesterday 16th of June 2022 the same shameless female teacher pounced on the eyewitness again with slaps and beating ,it was alleged that she used a ruler to smack the pupil fingers which caused the pupil severe injuries . The most worrisome aspect of this female teacher was she just got married recently, report has it that this has been going on in the school for some time before they were caught by the pupil. The Irony of this case is the male teacher involved was also caught by a primary pupil fondling a fellow pupil.

Also according to report this is not the first time this notorious male teacher was caught molesting children and yet the school management covered his misdeed , the primary 2 pupil who is 7 years old was equally brutalized by this same randy male teacher .

It is very worrisome that a school  kept quiet on such serious matter, I as speak the primary 4 pupil who was tortured by the erring teachers and the management is seriously down with fever and body discomfort. we are calling on the prompt interventions of the good offices of the Director School Social Work Lagos State Ministry of Youth and social Development MYSD ALAUSA IKEJA,Lagos State Ministry of Education, The Gender Desk Area M. Blessing Adermi of PAHFIN NGO, Comrade Lolade AJAYI copy.Forgiveness is a terrible sin when it comes to such a case"
Good morning sir. Please sir don't publish this story. I need to investigate more. Thank you sir.

10 years old girl down with HIV after two brothers engage her in marathon s*x

A 10 year old girl is battling for her life at the Igando General hospital Lagos after two brothers allegedly took turns to defile her.

The girl's plight was exposed by a good female  neighbour  who had noticed her depreciating heath  and  took her to the hospital  for treatment.

The Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN  stated " According to the neighbor, the 10 years old girl fell sick late last year,no care or treatment was provided for her by the grandma, she had to bear the cost of the treatment herself.

Due to the kindnesses of the neighbour towards the survivor, she opened up to her that she has been sexually abused by the first and third son of the grandma she's staying with. The neighbour asked her if grandma is aware of the incidents and the survivor's response shocked her. She said grandma has caught the third son having sex with her, she then warned him seriously never to repeat such act.

Why God couldn't stop the Owo Catholic church attack ----- Rev.Faloju.

Reverend Seyi Faloju , the head pastor of Gracepoint church  Ibadan has urged those blaming God for the Owo Catholic church attack where scores of worshippers were murdered by gun men who invaded the church  to desist from such blame game.
Reverend Faloju said God still remains God and He is justified in all things.
He chided those blaming God that they do not have understanding of how God works and relates with humans.
He said " I learnt that some said  those worshippers in the Catholic church in Owo  were shouting " Jesus, Jesus"  so why didn't Jesus save them?  I tell such people to keep quiet if they don't know spiritual things. You think God is a magician who will say I order you to stop and you will stop. No that is not how God operates or relates with us. God must have put that burden of that attack on you to pray (to avert) it but you did not listen, you did not pray. You see, God is justified in all things ".
Speaking about the 911 attack in America, Reverend Faloju said a prominent man of God questioned God why God did not prevent the attack and God replied him that He God  spoke to everyone that morning not to go to work.
Reverend Faloju advised that we should build our spiritual life so that we can connect  with God and hear from him. He emphasised the need for Christians to be vigilant and build  their spiritual lives by reading the bible, praying and spending quality time with God.
He stated " That way you will know what to do. Where to go and when someone is lying. God is a spirit and we must worship Him in spirit and truth".
Attacks on churches and kidnapping have seen churches heighten security and putting   measures in place to prevent attacks.  Churches are now putting up barricades, engaging police and civil defence personnel , search and use of bomb detectors at thier entrances. Security personnel are more now vigilant during service all in a bid to prevent  attacks by gun men who are targeting churches and christians.

Driver absconds with 325 bags of soyabeans valued at N17 million.

There has begun a manhunt for one Olalekan Salawu a driver who has allegedly absconded with   a trailer of soyabeans worth N17million.
It was gathered that Salawu was hired to convey  325 bags of soyabeans valued at N17 million from the Valency Agro Nigeria Limited Montana Ibadan  since April 22 but his whereabouts and that of the goods are yet to be known said a source.
Fraudulent invoices and illegal diversion of goods have been on the rise which has given police authority concerns.
Towards this end, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone 2 police command Onikan Lagos AIG Adeleke recently exposed the modus operandi of these fraudsters as he  advised  members of the public to be wary of the tricks of such fraudsters and not fall victims.
 AIG Adeleke stated
" This is to inform the general public especially business men and women on the illicit and fraudulent manner through which criminals operate and their modus operandi, series of petitions have been written to the *Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan Lagos* that fraudsters now sought business men and women (who deal in sales of building materials, etc) who advertise their goods through various social media platforms and also sought for potential buyers of such goods.

The criminals will contact dealers who advertise such goods on social media platforms and act like genuine buyers while they order for goods in large quantity. They also act like genuine dealers to their prospective victims and give about 3% to 5% discount in order to entice their prospective victims.

Upon indication of interest, the prospective buyer will be lured into making payment. Having made payment, the fraudsters will then give instruction to the dealer on the other hand to load the quantity of good requested by the victim with the pretext that payment will be made and confirmed on delivery before offloading of the goods.
When it has been confirmed that goods have arrived destination, the fraudster then goes incommunicado while the driver will be the one having issues with the victim who already made payment and has been expecting delivery of goods paid for; this is always done mostly on Fridays to prevent any kind of banking system retrieval.
SP Hauwa Idris Adamu the
Zonal Police Public Relations Officer
Zone 2 Command stated that the Command is sending this to the general public as awareness; so, no one will fall victim of the antics of fraudsters who pretend as business clients while passing a very strict
warning to all criminal minded groups or individuals to relocate from the Zone as they will not find it easy operating within the Zonal Command,

Sex worker murdered for having Quran in her room.

Patrons of  sex workerS in Lagos have allegedly killed and burnt one  Hannah Saliu, to death and setting her corpse ablaze for keeping the Holy Quran in her room.

Hannah is however a Christian name and having a Quran by a Christian is not common.

According to Punch newspapers,  one of the suspects patronised Saliu and after having sex with her, he reportedly paid her N1,000 for the service.

The customer was said to have left her room when she suddenly discovered that her N5,000 had gone missing.

She reportedly ran after the customer and accused him of stealing her money.

The accusation, however, degenerated into an argument.

The customer was said to have mobilised his friends to Saliu’s room to search for the missing money.

While searching the place, the friends reportedly found a Quran underneath her pillow.

A source said Saliu was questioned for possessing the Quran with the kind of job she was doing, adding that the customer and his friends, who became infuriated by the discovery, pounced on her, beat her up and set her ablaze.

The source said, “What happened was that the girl was a prostitute and a customer patronised her and after sleeping with her, the customer paid N1,000 for her service.

“But when the customer was leaving, he stole the prostitute’s N5,000 and after discovering that her money had gone missing, the prostitute chased him to ask for her money.

“The Northerners, who were with the customer that the girl accused of stealing her money, asked if she was sure that he stole her money. So, they decided to go and search her room where she attended to her customers.

“While searching the room, they found Quran under her pillow and started asking what she was using the Quran for as a prostitute. So, they started attacking her; they stabbed her, took her out and set her ablaze.

“The incident happened at Alaba Rago, where a lot of Northerners reside. The girl that was killed also came from the North. Their grouse was that she was not supposed to be carrying Quran because of the kind of work she was doing.”

The state Police Public Relations, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The case is at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, and three suspects have been charged to court. The incident happened in April.”

A source identified the suspects as Abubakar Musa, Sarauta Monsur, and Surajo Yusuf.

Delayed justice impeding fight against gender based violence --- Obaseki

Gender based violence victims are not getting the desired respite.

This has been brought to the fore by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday as he , expressed concern over the delay in the investigation and prosecution of those behind the rape and gruesome murder of late Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 Level Microbiology student of the University of Benin.

Late Uwaila Omozuwa was murdered in 2020 at a church in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki, while declaring open the ‘End of Project Workshop’ for the National Academy for Science, noted that delayed justice for victims was impeding the fight against gender-based violence in the state.

The workshop has the theme, “Strengthening the Evidence and Response Pathways for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in key states in Nigeria.”

The governor said, “Two years after Uwaila Omozuwa was brutally murdered in Benin City, we have still not been able to prosecute the perpetrators of this dastardly act. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) insisted that this case should be moved to headquarters.

“As we speak, the investigation is stalling. This is really, really sad and we will not be able to make progress in our fight against gender-based violence if we can’t get reports from the very highest authorities in Nigeria.”

1.5 trn spent on oversea aircraft maintenance

ABDUCTED CLERGYMAN, WIFE ,DRIVER  REGAIN FREEDOM AFTER 3 DAYS IN KIDNAPPERS' DEN LAGOS - Overseas maintenance of commercial airplanes operating in the country currently costs Nigeria at least $2.5 billion or N1.52 trillion ($1:N608) in capital flight yearly.

The mandatory maintenance programme, ranging from minor to complex checks per session on an aircraft, costs about $2 million (N1.2 billion), and a cumulative burden on the industry in particular.

Besides, the misfortunes of the weak Naira-to-Dollar exchange rate, perennial lack of high-capacity Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities since the 90s has been the undoing of the country. Though the current administration promised to have one in place as part of the Aviation Roadmap initiative of 2016, the plan is yet to become a reality.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja, at the maiden edition of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) National Aviation Conference (FNAC), the Managing Director of FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, said such capital flight would have been avoided if the country had MRO facilities that could adequately cater for all types of commercial airplanes.

Nigeria fuel subsidy to gulp 5trn -- World Bank

Highlights of the latest World Bank Nigeria Development Update NDU has disclosed that the country stand to lose more than five trillion Naira in revenues in 2022 from crude oil sales.

This was part of the revelations during the presentation of the UDU report in Abuja yesterday.

According to the report, “When we launched our previous Nigeria Development Update in November 2021, we estimated that Nigeria could stand to lose more than three trillion Naira in revenues in 2022 because the proceeds from crude oil sales, instead of going to the federation account, would be used to cover the rising cost of gasoline subsidies that mostly benefit the rich.”

Sadly, that projection turned out to be optimistic,” said Shubham Chaudhuri, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria. “With oil prices going up significantly, and with it, the price of imported gasoline, we now estimate that the foregone revenues as a result of gasoline subsidies will be closer to five trillion Naira in 2022.”

And that five trillion is urgently needed to cushion ordinary Nigerians from the crushing effect of double-digit increases in the cost of basic commodities, to invest in Nigeria’s children and youth, and in the infrastructure needed for private businesses small and large to flourish, grow and create jobs.”

The UDU report explained that the inflation in Nigeria, already one of the highest in the world before the war in Ukraine, is likely to increase further as a result of the rise in global fuel and food prices caused by the war.

Ogun Govt. Frees 40 inmates, six convicts on death row get life imprisonment

As part of activities commemorating the 2023 Democracy Day, Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved the committal of six convicts on death row to life imprisonment and also released 40 inmates.

According to Champion news, the governor made the pronouncement on Sunday while speaking at the June 12 commemorative anniversary and Nigeria’s Democracy Day, held at the M.K.O International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

He explained that the committal to life imprisonment and release of the convicted inmates is in accordance with the provisions of Sections 212 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, (as amended) and Sections 4 and 5 of the Ogun State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy (Establishment Law), Laws of Ogun State 2006.

Abiodun, who called on Nigerians to draw strength from the 1993 general election and make the 2023 exercise even better, equally advocated stringent punishment for violators of due process in elections, declaring that

people’s ballots must count and be respected in 2023.

The governor noted that the struggles of June 12 as orchestrated by late MKO Abiola gave birth to the seamless democracy Nigeria has enjoyed in the last 29 years, emphasising that  “only by upholding the tenets of democracy and ensuring its sustainability that we can truly honour the memory of those ideals that Chief MKO Abiola and others stood and died for”.

While saying that the process to a free, fair and credible election begins, among other things, with voters’ participation in the registration exercise, Abiodun stressed that for the 2023 general elections to be a huge success, every eligible Nigerian must register to vote and actually take part in voting on the day of election.

“While it is heart-warming to note that in the last 29 years, we have enjoyed seamless civilian-to-civilian transition, it is only by upholding the tenets of democracy and ensuring its sustainability that we can truly honour the memory of those ideals that Chief MKO Abiola and others stood and died for. People’s ballots must count and be respected, while violators of due process in elections ought to be dealt the full wrath of the law.

“If the ideals matter to us, religion and ethnicity too should not become campaign issues or determinants of who gets what, when, how in our body-politic or become primary considerations in our leadership recruitment and governance processes. I can envision how these Nigerians who gave their all would be cringing in their graves seeing us celebrating divisive vices and our do-or-die politicking”, the governor stated.

He urged political leaders and followers to keep hope and fairplay  alive in democracy, tasking them to fashion a way to ensure that will make democracy in Nigeria a means to an end, not an end in itself.

Abiodun further charged Nigerians to internalise democratic values and

Man kills self, after shooting wife, mother-in-law, abducts baby ,

41-year-old Nigerian, Obinna Igbokwe, in Texas, United States, shot his wife, Tangela Igbokwe, killed her mother and fled to North Texas with their three-month-old son, Mansa, before finally killing himself.

Igbokwe lived in Spring, Montgomery County of Dallas, Texas.

According to the U.S. police, Obinna Igbokwe and his wife argued over the custody of the couple’s three-month-old son Mansa.

The nicheng reports that the argument according to the police led to the shooting.

Igbokwe shot his wife and her mother point blank, in the head.

The wife, who survived the shooting is, however, said to be in critical condition in the hospital.

But her mother, Linda Larkins, who was also shot in the head was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police authorities said the suspect’s 14-year-old son might have witnessed the shootings and went next door to get help.

Obinna Igbokwe reportedly took their son and fled in a 2008 white Honda Accord.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies thereafter raised an AMBER Alert, which was, however discontinued after the suspect shot and killed himself.

The shooting happened in the 30120 block of Aldine Westfield Road around 7.30 p.m.

According to the Corsicana Police Department, Igbokwe dropped off the child in a car seat at a hotel and said he would be right back, but never returned.

Since he did not return, police said they were contacted and learned the man left in a white passenger car.

At about 1.05 a.m., Ennis Police Department officers said they located the white Honda Igbokwe was driving and attempted to stop the vehicle.

After a short pursuit, the Honda stopped in a parking lot, where officers observed and heard a single gunshot come from the interior of the Honda.

Law enforcement officers began life-saving measures and summoned medical personnel, but due to the severity of the injury, authorities said Igbokwe succumbed to his wounds at a Dallas hospital at about 5.20 a.m.

Authorities said Mansa is safe and unharmed and has been reunited with his family.

“Our hearts are with the family affected by this tragic and horrific crime and we are working with the victims to ensure they receive support and assistance,” a Facebook post from MCSO said.

This investigation is being completed across multiple jurisdictions and involves the Corsicana Police Department, Ennis Police Department, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montgomery
