24 years old lady allegedly kills herself with rat poison over failed relationship

Jamima Shetima Balami , a 24-year-old National Diploma II student of the Department of Mass Communication at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State, has already taken her own life.

The daughter of prominent figure Shettima reportedly consumed a substance believed to be rat poison at her residence in Vinikilang, known as Hayin Gada in the Girei local government area of the state.

Jamima, the only daughter of her father, was undergoing Industrial Training (IT) at Adamawa Television (ATV), Yola, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to reports, the young student’s decision to end her life was influenced by a distressing romantic relationship. Allegedly, her boyfriend, said to be a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), delivered news of terminating their relationship, a revelation that reportedly pushed Jamima to the tragic act.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the incident, revealing that Jamima’s father reported the matter to the police. The PPRO acknowledged that two versions of the story had surfaced – one indicating suicide by substances and the other suggesting the impact of a failed relationship.

Nguroje assured the public that the police are diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death and will disclose the findings once the investigation is complete.

Gunmen kill two Ekiti monarchs

breaking-gunmen-kill-six-in-osun-village
Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Monday evening killed  two traditional rulers in Ikole  Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The traditional rulers were the Elesun of Esun Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin and Olumojo of Imojo, Oba Samuel Olatunji..

The monarchs were allegedly ambushed and killed by the arm-wielding attackers along Ipao-Irele-Oke Ako while returning from Ogbe, a neighboring town in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi state.

It was reliably gathered that the vehicle conveying three  monarchs was accosted and Oba Ogunsakin and Oba Olatunji were killed while the Alara of Ara-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba escaped from the scene.

Sources said the monarchs were returning from Ogbe in Kogi state in a vehicle drove by the Alara when the armed men struck.

When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, Sunday Abutu said: “I will get the details and get back please.”

The chairman of the Ajoni Local Council Development Area, Micheal Ogungbemi confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

Ogungbemi, who condemned the attack, said the gunmen attempted to kidnap the three traditional rulers.

Ogungbemi, who lamented the killing of the revered traditional rulers , said he had mobilised local security outfits including the Amotekun corps to comb the forest in a bid to arrest the perpetrators.

According to him: “ I just returned from the scene of the unfortunate incident along Oke-Ako road and I can confirm that two traditional rulers; the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti and Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti were killed by the gunmen who ambushed them.

“ The Alara of Ara-Ekiti managed to escape from the incident, he was the one driving when the incident happened.

“ We have evacuated the remains of the monarchs and deposited them in the morgue at the Ikole General Hospital.

“ Our local security outfit and Amotekun have been drafted to the scene and the bush to arrest the bandits who committed this dastardly act.”

Ogungbemi, who appealed to the Federal Government to approve usage of arms by the local security outfits in the State, said the attacks have been recurring in the area in the last few years.

“ I am extremely sad with the situation and I want to call on the government to allow our local security network to carry arms because the traditional ruler who escaped told us the gunmen were carrying AK-47 and other dangerous weapons. These people are killing us and it is becoming unbearable.

The secretary of Majority Obas of Ekiti Land (MOBEL) and Onikun of Ikun-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde David Olushola who condemned the killing of the traditional rulers said the time has come for the government to localize security system in order to address the growing insecurity in the land.

“ The two traditional rulers were active members of our association(MOBEL) and it is very sad.

“ We have been talking over the years but government is paying lip service to the issue of security. The time has come for them to localize the issue of security and sit down with the traditional rulers to secure our communities, we know what to do.

“ This is not issue about money , government should immediately sit down with the traditional rulers for us to secure our land and maintain peace,” he said.

Man who killed woman 35 years ago , executed with nitrogen gas.

Alabama murderer, Kenneth Smith 58 has become the first person in the world to be put to death by nitrogen gas after officials at the Alabama Department of Corrections executed him d on Thursday, January 25, at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. He died from nitrogen hypoxia at 8.25pm CT, the state’s Republican Governor Kay Ivey confirmed.

“On March 18, 1988, 45-year-old Elizabeth Sennett’s life was brutally taken from her by Kenneth Eugene Smith.

After more than 30 years and attempt after attempt to game the system, Mr Smith has answered for his horrendous crimes,” Ms Ivey said in a written statement.

“The execution was lawfully carried out by nitrogen hypoxia, the method previously requested by Mr Smith as an alternative to lethal injection. At long last, Mr Smith got what he asked for, and this case can finally be put to rest.

“I pray that Elizabeth Sennett’s family can receive closure after all these years dealing with that great loss.”

Before his execution, Smith was visited in prison by his wife and sons, who also witnessed his execution. His last meal was steak, eggs and hash browns.

Media witnesses who saw correctional authorities administer the death penalty said the prisoner’s final words included, “Tonight Alabama causes humanity to take a step backwards… Thank you for supporting me. Love you all.

“I’m leaving with love, peace, and light.”

As officials conducted the execution at 7.53pm, Smith turned to his family and signed “I love you.” The witnesses reported seeing Smith shaking and writhing. The curtains closed at 8.15pm.

Ms Sennett’s sons, Mike and Chuck Sennett, addressed members of the media following the execution.

“Nothing happened here today is going to bring mom back,” Chuck Sennett said from a podium at the correctional facility. “It’s kind of a bittersweet day. We’re not going to be jumping around…We’re glad this day is over.”

He continued his remarks by saying that he’s forgiven all of the men who played a role in his mother’s death.

“Evil deeds have consequences,” Ms Sennett’s son added. “Kenneth Smith made some bad decisions 35 years ago and his debt was paid tonight.”

It was the second attempt to execute Smith. In November 2022, officials attempted to kill him with lethal injection but were unable to place two intravenous lines into his system for four hours. Authorities eventually gave up because Smith’s death warrant was expiring.

At the time, it was the third consecutive botched execution attempt by the state using lethal injection. Smith said the experience left him with physical and psychological pain, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Speaking about his second execution attempt, Smith voiced his preference for nitrogen hypoxia but expressed concern about the state’s untested method, including the likelihood that he could vomit, be left in a vegetative state, or experience the painful sensation of suffocation.

According to Alabama’s death penalty protocol for nitrogen hypoxia, prisoners are to be put to death with a fitted mask and breathing tube to control gas, slowly depriving them of oxygen.

U.S. Court fines Funke Ashekun $50,000 Damages for Defaming MFM Church, Dr DK Olukoya

A US - based Nigerian blogger Funke Ashekun has been slammed $50,000 by a  Baltimore County Circuit Court in the United States of America for defaming the Mountain of Fire Ministry MFM and it's founder. Dr. DK Olukoya.

Collins Edomaruse, media aide to Dr. Olukoya, said in a statement on Thursday that the damages were slammed on Ashekun for defaming Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) and its General Overseer, Dr. Daniel Olukoya.

The fifty thousand dollars is the amount of damages she is to pay.

The jury found that the postings of Ms. Ashekun had defamed the Mountain of Fire and shown its pastors in a false light.

In handing down judgement in the matter with Case Number: C-03-CV-22-004424, the court returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Mountain of Fire USA and its three pastors, Grace Ugeh, Kunle Ladipo and Adekunle Adekola.

Ashekun is a Nigerian lady, who recently relocated to the United States. She has been on the social media, spreading all manners of falsehoods against the MFM Church and its General Overseer with the sole purpose of tarnishing and damaging the reputation of the respected Man of God and that of his ministry – MFM.

Being deceived by this illusion that she can hide in the U.S. and successfully carry out the job of her paymasters to ridicule and tarnish the image of the MFM and it’s General Overseer, she refused to heed all Godly counsel for her to retrace her steps and refrain from her self-destructive mission.

Thus, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (U.S) successfully prosecuted its claims against her which did not last for a year.

The case thus represents a victory for the MFM ministry, its local pastors and the General Overseer.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry’s lead counsel, Gilbert Garcia, said that the ‘Church was gratified that the jury found in favor and vindicated our position.’

Police expose Mr. Ibu's son, adopted daughter's sham marriage, reveals how they defrauded ailing actor of N55 million.

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos State, have disclosed that duo of Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu, arrested for conspiring and defrauding Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu of the sum of N55 million, had conducted a sham marriage and ready to escape from the country as a couple.

According to a statement by the FCID on Thursday, the suspects had had a sham marriage at Ikoyi registry and were waiting for their UK visa to escape from the country before their arrest.

“It was also established that the two suspects, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu and Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor had a sham marriage at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry with plans to escape from the country to UK where they intended to settle with their proceeds of crime. They already applied for a UK Visa in furtherance to this plan prior to their arrest,” the statement says.

Tribune Online reports that the family of the ailing veteran actor, in October 2023, revealed that the actor had undergone five surgeries, seeking for further treatment abroad and appreciating donations from the actor’s fans.

Revealing details of the crime, the FCID Spokesperson, ASP Mayegun Aminat, disclosed that the department acted on a petition received from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of the actor’s wife, Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, alleging that two sons of Mr. Ibu conspired with his adopted daughter, Jasmine, to defraud their father.

“On 6th September, 2023, a petition was received from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor wherein one Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, Valentine Okafor, both of whom are sons of Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor (Alias Ibu) and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu were alleged to have conspired to defraud Mr. Ibu while being on sick bed.

“Investigation into the case established that as part of efforts to fund his medical bills, Mr. Ibu launched a public fund-raising initiative and attracted donations from his fans, entertainment industry players, and other well-spirited members of the public into a bank account which he publicized and dedicated for the purpose. Mr. Ibu’s wife, Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor was initially managing the funds to defray the medical bills of Mr. Ibu and sustain the family. However, along the line, the duo of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu manipulated Mrs Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, took possession of Mr. Ibu’s phone, and hacked into the banking details therein,” the Police said.

Continuing, the FCID Spokesperson, ASP Mayegun Aminat, explained how the duo reinstalled the banking app on the phone belonging to Okafor and transferred the sum of N55m from the donations for the actor’s medical bill.

“They thereafter re-installed the mobile banking applications of Mr. Ibu on the phone of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor preparatory to the perfection of their preconceived fraudulent plans and wiped off the banking applications originally installed on Mr. Ibu’s phone, thereby, taking direct and full charge of banking activities of Mr. Ibu in relation to the funds being donated by members of the public in support of his medicals.

“Through this fraudulent act, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu started transferring funds from Mr. Ibu’s public fundraising account to Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor’s personal bank with forensic analysis of their illicit financial dealing establishing that a total of fifty five million naira (=N=55M) has been successfully and criminally transferred prior to their arrest and investigation.

“Investigation also unearthed text messages via WhatsApp between Jasmine Chioma and Daniel Okafor detailing in stage-by-stage how they conspired and hatched their criminal plans. It was also established that the two suspects, Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu and Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor had a sham marriage at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry with plans to escape from the country to UK where they intended to settle with their proceeds of crime. They already applied for a UK Visa in furtherance to this plan prior to their arrest,” the statement added.

The FCID, while stating that a sum of N50 million has been recovered from the suspects, added that they have both been charged at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba in Charge No. A/06/2024 for conspiracy and stealing.

The statement added, “During investigation, the stolen fifty-five million naira (=N=55M) was traced to the Bank Account of Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor wherein it was discovered that they had squandered a total of five million naira (=N=5M) on questionable transactions, while the balance total of fifty million (=N=50M) has been recovered from him.

“On the strength of evidence, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor, and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu have been charged to the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba in Charge No. A/06/2024 for conspiracy and stealing. They were granted bail in the sum of =N= 15m with two sureties in like sum while case was adjourned to 11th March, 2024. Meanwhile the casefile has been forwarded to the Office of Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.”

Igbos have a right to choose thier leaders anywhere in the world ---- Eze Dr. Chika Nwokedi

The Eze Ndigbo of  Ijegun/ Ijedodo Eze Dr. Chika C. Nwokedi who is also the   Chairman Council of Ndi Eze  in Lagos state  has decried the  publication making the rounds on social media that Eze Ndigbo  title in Lagos state is illegal.

Eze Dr.  Nwokedi who is a well respected royal father , an astute philanthropist and passionate lover of peace and progress in a telephone interview expressed his dismay at the negative report targeting respectable Igbo  traditional rulers in Lagos state following the prosecution of one of them, the Eze Ndigbo of  Ajao Estate, Eze Frederick Nwajiagu, for alleged terrorism by the Lagos state government.

He said" I also saw the publication and I am shocked. That  report stated that those parading themselves as Eze Ndigbo in Lagos state risk two years imprisonment  is false as we have a court judgment during the tenure of former governor of Lagos state Mr. Raji Fashola that the title of Eze Ndigbo in Lagos state is legal. We took the government to court and we won so if any news report is saying that the  title is illegal and the bearers of the titles can be arrested, jailed for two years ,is not only a mischievous publication but a complete falsehood .From what we gathered , this report was published by a journalist that was not in court at the case involving Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Eze Frederick Nwajiagu, for alleged terrorism."

The said news report  had read in part "

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Local Governments, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Developments, has stated that those parading themselves as Ezendigbo risk two years imprisonment because the title is not recognized by the State Government. That one  Assistant Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Raulat Ibrahim, before the Lagos State High Court while testifying against Ezendigbo in Ajao Estate, Eze Frederick Nwajiagu, for terrorism revealed that by Law, if any person is parading himself as Chief or King without the permission of the State Government through the Ministry, the person risks imprisonment and from the case of Eze Nwajiagu, who presented certificate signed by the President of Igbo Speaking Community, as Ezendigbo, it means that other Ndiezes with such certificate risk imprisonment because it is not recognized by the government". end of quote

Eze Dr.  Nwokedi took his time to englighten   members of the public and urged them to discountenance the publication. He said " The Igbos are law abiding citizens and we work for the progress of any community we find ourselves. This  matter has already  been settled in court Moreso,  Igbos have a right to choose thier leaders anywhere in the world . Also,  the state government is not paying us. The report is false and I urge members of the public to discountenance it".
