Recovered cows
Two Muslim men have died after they were attacked by Indian villagers who suspected them of stealing cows , police said Monday , the latest such attack over the animal Hindus consider sacred .
Police in the northeastern state of Assam said they had registered a murder case over the deaths of Abu Hanifa and Riyazuddin Ali who were beaten with sticks on Sunday . Two suspects have been detained for questioning.
“ They were chased and beaten with sticks by villagers who said the two boys were trying to steal cows from their grazing field, ” Debaraj Upadhyay , Nagaon ’ s top cop, told AFP by telephone .
“ By the time we took them to the hospital at night they had succumbed to their injuries, ” he added .
The incident comes amidst a wave of rising tensions over the killing and smuggling of cows in Hindu- majority India, where the animal is considered sacred and its slaughter is a punishable offence in many states .
There have been a spate of attacks in recent months by ‘ cow protection ’ vigilante groups , who roam some highways inspecting livestock trucks for any trace of the animal .
A Muslim man died last month after his truck carrying cows was attacked by a group in western Rajasthan state .
But Updadhyay dismissed any suggestion that a vigilante group or association was involved in the latest incident .
In 2015 , a Muslim man was lynched by his neighbours over rumours that he had slaughtered a cow. Police later said the meat was mutton .
Critics say the vigilantes have been emboldened by the election in 2014 of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’ s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party .
Last year Modi criticised the cow-protection vigilantes and urged a crackdown against groups using religion as a cover for committing crimes .

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a syndicate in Abeokuta , the Ogun State capital , which confessed to erecting a radio mast to hack the Virtual Private Network of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board .
Our correspondent learnt that the syndicate , including a proprietor of one Bright Technologies , whose name was not given by NSCDC , confessed to collecting N 600, 000 for the deal .
The hacker ’ s wife and other accomplices were also arrested by the NSCDC crack team from Abuja. Other suspects , identified only as Segun and Jide, are said to be at large .
One of the suspects , identified only as Tosin , said the deal was to extend the JAMB network from an accredited Computer Based Test centre in Abeokuta to some cyber cafe operators for the purpose of illegal registration of candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination .
The corps stated that during the interrogation , the proprietor , who confessed to the crime , said he was paid over N600 , 000 for the job , adding that he created over 400 User Names and passwords.
He told the operatives, “ We are using unlicensed spectrum to transmit to our customers using 2 . 4 gigabyte and 5 . 8 gigabyte radio. On March 28 , they came from Kindle e - Learning Service that they wanted Internet services and after three days, they came again , ( Tosin , Segun and Jide) that they wanted us to configure VPN for them.
“ They told me they needed our services only during the JAMB registration and on April 1 , we went to their office . They gave me the IP ( Internet Protocol ) address and I did pinging from my own Router . I have collected about N600 , 000 so far from Kindle e - Learning . ”

Judiciary staff arrested for allegedly killing woman

Festus Ahon
A 49-year-old judiciary staff in Delta State, Mr. Narebor Stephen Donbrapade, has been sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing his flatmate’s wife to death by a Delta State high court sitting in Ughelli.
The accused, who hails from Esama town in Bomadi Local Government Area, had on or about January 31, 2013, murdered one Stella Avwenayerhe by stabbing her on the chest at Otobo Street, Ughelli.
Donbrapade, who shared a three bedroom flat with the deceased’s husband, was said to have had a minor altercation with the victim after he walked on the rug in the sitting room without removing his shoes.
Annoyed that he was reprimanded by the deceased, the accused was said to have dashed into his room only to appear with a knife with which he stabbed Stella Avwenayerhe on the chest. She was confirmed dead by doctors at the Ughelli Central hospital, where she was rushed to by neighbours.
The accused, in his defense, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of murder, alleging that the victim was stabbed to death by some unidentified hoodlums in the area.
Delivering his judgment, Justice F. O. Ohwo found the accused guilty on the one-count charge preferred against him by the State Attorney-General through the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He held that the evidences of the four prosecution witnesses called by an Assistant Director in the Ministry of Justice, including the husband of the deceased, proved beyond all reasonable doubt the essential ingredients of the offence of murder against the accused.

John Ameh, Abuja
No fewer than 76 organisations , including International Oil Companies , still have queries to answer over the alleged export of $ 17 bn undeclared crude and gas resources from the country between 2011 and 2014 , The PUNCH learnt on Sunday .
Among them are key government agencies like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ; the Department of Petroleum Resources; the Nigerian Ports Authority ; the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency ; and the Nigeria Customs Service .
At least , 50 oil companies have either not made attempt to respond to inquiries on the issues or have completely shunned the investigative panel set up by the House of Representatives .
An ad hoc committee of the House is investigating the alleged theft .
Findings by The PUNCH showed that the committee , which is chaired by a member of the All Progressives Congress from Adamawa State , Mr . Abdulrazak Namdas , had so far received unsatisfactory replies from the NNPC, the DPR and other agencies .
A report of the committee, analysing the response level of agencies and IOCs , showed for instance that the NNPC would be “ re - invited” because the documents it submitted to the committee did not convincingly address the crude and gas theft .
The report , which The PUNCH obtained in Abuja on Sunday , stated , “ DPR to come back with DG and operational manager .
“ NPA to come back with MD /management officers .
“ Central Bank of Nigeria was excused ; it will be re- invited . ”
A second category of agencies are tagged by the committee as “agencies that did not attend ” its public hearing on the alleged theft .
Top on the list are NIMASA , the NCS , National Petroleum Investment Management Services, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Molecular Power Systems Limited .
The report also indicated that many IOCs , summoned by the committee , either did not supply the required documents or were unable to defend their submissions .
As a result, it was gathered that the committee turned them away and fixed a re - appearance date .
For instance , the report stated that Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited was directed to “ bring record of tax payments and other documents ” covering the period under investigation .
It added , “ ExxonMobil , dismissed for lack of competent delegate .
“ Sahara Energy Resources Limited to provide evidence of tax payment .
“ Chevron Nigeria Limited dismissed for lack of competent delegate.
“ Oando Trading Limited to come back with evidence of profit tax payment and others. ”
Among the 50 companies that did not appear at all are Shell Western Supply and Trading ; AITEO Energy Resources Limited ; AITEO Eastern Exploration and Production Limited ; Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited ; and Total Upstream Production Limited .
Others are Petrobras; Trafigura ; SNEPCO ; Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy ; Consolidated Oil

Osinbajo panel: NSA, NIA clash over seized N13bn cash
Published April 30, 2017

OLALEKAN ADETAYO and ENIOLA AKINKUOTU
There was confusion on Saturday over the seized N13 bn cash found in an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos , which was discovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission .
The seizure is the subject of an ongoing investigation being conducted by Vice- President Yemi Osinbajo; the Attorney General of the Federation , Abubakar Malami ( SAN ); and the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno .
A highly reliable source told SUNDAY PUNCH that the embattled Director General of the National Intelligence Agency , Ambassador Ayo Oke, hid the over $ 43 m from President Muhammadu Buhari and Monguno in a private apartment.
However , the NIA replied swiftly , saying that Oke mentioned the money to Monguno twice .
According to the source , while the suspended NIA boss was widely reported to have claimed that Monguno was aware of the existence of the money , the NSA only got to know , for the first time, about the existence of the money during the work of the presidential committee that audited the Defence Equipment Procurement in the Armed Forces.
The committee had observed certain payments from the Central Bank of Nigeria to the NIA and raised questions , drawing the attention of the NSA to the funds .
“ The Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement , in the course of its assignment , came across an information that the NIA received a huge sum of money in early 2015 from the former president ( Goodluck Jonathan ) .
“ Based on that , the NSA carried out a preliminary investigation , during which the agency claimed the money was released for some projects aimed at commencing the NIA’ s 30 th anniversary . That was in January 2017 , ” the top government source said .
The source added that a team was constituted to ascertain the situation. The first suspicion of a potential abuse , according to the source , was noticed at this stage, especially considering the amount of money involved and the purposes stated .
“ This was how the NSA and the presidency learnt of the existence of such funds . We were not told by anyone in NIA until the committee saw something , and raised a red flag, ” the source noted .
He added that when Oke was compelled to explain what was happening , “ he still did not inform anyone any Federal Government official or the Presidency that he kept $ 43 m cash out of the said funds at a private apartment anywhere in Lagos or any part of the country. ”
SUNDAY PUNCH also learnt that there were also instances where the Central Bank of Nigeria paid out some of the funds directly to some NIA contractors, raising questions about why the suspended NIA top gun needed to put aside such huge cash in a private apartment.
In addition , it was gathered that the projects , for which the former president approved the funds , totalling $ 289 m , included two in Lagos whose cost was put at about $ 28 m , which is way less than the $ 43 m cash found in the Ikoyi apartment.
The source explained further that , as of January this year , funds for the Lagos projects had actually been released to the tune of $ 18 m , meaning that only about $ 10 m was left to be paid four months ago , before $ 43 m was found in the apartment .
As the three- member committee submits its report on Wednesday , there are indications that the suspended Oke may be indicted by the panel after grilling at least seven officials of the NIA.
Another source within the presidency told one of our correspondents that some of the officials quizzed were those in the finance department of the agency .
The source said , “ The panel has quizzed about seven officials of the NIA, including the suspended DG. The committee wanted to understand the workings of the agency and if it was the norm for such a huge amount of cash to be kept outside of financial institutions. ”
The outcome of the probe will determine if the EFCC should continue with its investigation of the NIA or not .
The NIA , however , said it briefed President Buhari on the release of $ 289 m by the administration of Goodluck Jonathan in April 2015 , a month before his inauguration .
The NIA , in a statement , said in January 2016 , Moguno was officially informed of the existence of the money in a memo.
The intelligence agency said , “ We would appreciate if the media can correct the allegations that the NSA was not briefed . Please find below some details :
“ The first briefing was April 2015 to the President on the state of affairs of the agency . The funds were itemised as $ 289 m intervention fund approved and released to the agency by the ( Goodluck ) Jonathan administration in November 2014 .
“ The second briefing was in January 2016 ; in a memo to the NSA , he gave more details of the funds .
“ Based on the second briefing ( memo) report , the NSA set up an audit team, headed by a brigadier general , which inspected the projects and submitted a report in February 2016 .
“ The NSA wrote back to the DG, NIA on May 17 , 2016 , stating that the detailed report of NIA’ s projects and exercises had been presented to the President and the President was pleased with their work. ”

Peter Dada, Akure
The residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital have called on the state governor, Mr . Rotimi Akeredolu and the state commissioner of police , Mrs. Hilda Harrison to save them from incessant robbery attacks which according to them occurred on daily basis.
It was gathered that some of the areas in the capital city which always experience such robbery attacks included , Leo , Fanibi, Lafe , Ondo Road, Olusegun Agagu Road among others.
The residents said , in order not to fall victim of robbery attacks, many churches in the affected areas had stopped organizing daily , weekly and monthly vigils .
It would be recalled that in March some churches were invaded by some gangs of robbers during a vigil , carting away the offerings of the churches worth millions of naira.
One of the residents who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday on condition of anonymity complained that the two police divisions in the affected areas were full of reports of the activities of the bandits on the residents, yet there was no solution to the problem from the police command .
She explained that the robbers usually spent hours to operate at the areas without any interruption , alleging that the police would not arrive the robbery scenes until when the robbers had left .
According to her , many residents of the affected areas had lost their valuables worth millions of naira to the hoodlums .
She said , “ We are always helpless whenever the robbers strike because if we call the police they would not come until the robbers have left . That is why we are calling on Governor Akeredolu to assist us , robbery has now become a regular occurrence in our area .
“ The robbers did not even have respect for God again because they also attacked churches, that is why many churches don ’ t hold vigil again , this is not good for this state . ”
In his reaction however , the Public Relations Officer of the command , Mr . Femi Joseph urged the resident to call on the Divisional Police Officers in their area whenever there is robbery attack , he had given the telephone lines of the control room and that of the D. P. O to the people .
He said , “ We have to appeal to our people, I have given the telephone numbers of the four D. P. Os we have in Akure and if any one of them did not respond , the people should report him at the police headquarters .
Joseph insisted that the command was doing everything possible to ensure the capital city was free of robbery day and night .

Militants lay siege to Ogun riverine communities, kill 3

Militants lay siege to Ogun riverine communities, kill 3 April 29, 2017 Correspondent Attack businessman, steal N4. 2million Everyday discussion of residents of Ogun riverine communities which was about fishing, farming and families have sadly turned to tales of woes, fear and hopelessness. This state of affair is not unconnected with the invasion of the once peaceful communities by armed militants who have for the past three months laid siege to these communities, attacking and kidnapping residents at will. From car parks to houses, from markets to places of worship, residents’ discussion centres around their sufferings in the hands of the militants. Residents said the militants’ attacks have become a daily occurrence as they have added kidnapping and armed robbery to their heinous crimes. When our correspondent visited the Ogun Waterside Local Government it was observed that residents, though going about their normal activities, are however living in fear. Investigation reveals that communities under the militants’ attacks include Makun-Omi, Ode- Omi, Irokun and Iwopin which are border communities. These communities according to residents have become hideouts for militants since they were dislodged from Ishawo in Lagos State and Arepo in Ogun State. According to the residents, the militants first launched a surprise attack in Makun when on a market day, they stormed the market and opened fire on a Mobile police van. The residents said the policemen returned fire but had to retreat due to the superior firing power of the militants. The Local government Chairman Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Mr. Femi Onanuga, while narrating how the militants entered the local government area said: “The incident started as a land dispute between Atijere a border community in Ondo State and Makun community in Ogun State. Mobile policemen were deployed to stop the fighting.” A resident who identified himself as Lekan Toba said: “The land dispute led to kidnapping and armed robbery. The militants attacked the mobile policemen and their van on a market day at Makun and went away with a police rifle. They would have killed many people that day but God saved us. “A certain Mrs Shittu was kidnapped at the Abiade Farm settlement and her husband paid N1.2million and she was released after two weeks in captivity. Since that incident, they attacked again and attempted to kidnap a woman known as Iya-tewe also at Abiade community but they did not succeed. Another attack was launched at Makun during the burial of the Oba Odubatun. They killed an illustrious resident that day.” A trader who identified herself as Iya-Ayo said: “I have relocated my children from Makun community. They are living in Ijebu-Ode while I go to market at Makun. Many people have fled Makun. The last time the militants attacked, they shot and killed a father of a new-born, he was trying to make a call to his wife but they thought he was calling the police and they shot him in the head and he died on the spot. Makun is not safe. These militants come from the creeks. They told us they would not attack us but they do not want to see policemen or soldiers. They come to the market to buy recharge cards, garri and other foodstuffs. They attack every day. I only come to the market and as soon I am done selling my fish, I move back to Ijebu-Ode” A commercial driver, Ade Femi, said: “They have turned Makun to their base. They come out at will to buy goods and when they do not have money, they kidnap our members so we can give them money. They said if we can give them N10, 000 every day they would not bother to kidnap us. These militants are ijaws. They have lived with us and were helping us with loading and offloading our wood at the Waterside. They are very familiar with the terrains. Some of our boys have been conscripted into militancy. We are left to face them as the police have abandoned us. Our youth organised to face them but what can they do with old guns when these militants have superior weapons. They told us that they have five camps scattered in the swamps.” It was gathered that the militants also struck at Iwopin last weekend at the home of a businessman and held his family hostage after the businessman fled. A resident who requested anonymity said: “They came fully armed to the residence of the wealthy businessman but he escaped. Seeing that he had escaped, the militants held his family members hostage and threatened to kill them if they did not tell them where the strong room was. As soon as they got the information they needed, they destroyed the strong room and made away with N4. 2 million. They attempted to escape in their car but the community members shut the gate to the community and they ran into the gate. In the process, their vehicle was damaged but they continued to shoot intermittently from dusk till dawn. They hid inside the bush and when some hunters who were coming from an expedition ran into them, they shot and killed three of them. They eventually escaped but the community apprehended one of them who is a resident of the town as he was making efforts to secure another car for them to escape.” Speaking on the rampant militants’ attacks, the Executive Chairman of the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Comrade Femi Onanuga urged the Federal and state governments to secure lives and property in the area. He said: “The number one responsibility of government is to secure lives and property. The major means of livelihood is fishing and farming and when people cannot go to where they work for their daily bread then there will be trouble. We are appealing to the government to equip the Marine headquarters at Iwopin so that the officers and men there can function. They should be equipped with gun boats, speedboat and other gadgets. Also the police Unit should be stationed at Makun-Omi, Ode-Omi and Irokun. There is also need for a naval base to curtail the militants’ activities “. When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police, Superintendent of Police, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Ogun State Commissioner of Police had deployed policemen to the local government. “Anybody saying that policemen are not in the communities is being economical with the truth. The Commissioner of Police has deployed anti-robbery policemen, anti- kidnapping policemen and plainclothes policemen to these communities,” Oyeyemi said. “When the last attack occurred at Iwopin, our men repelled them and arrested one of them. Their operational vehicle was impounded. We are doing our best but if there is support from other agencies like the military – air force and navy – we will be glad to work with them.” Share this: Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)2Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)2Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)1Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)1Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Like this: Metro and Crimekill 3, Militants lay siege to Ogun riverine communities Post navigation I went into robbery after President Buhari came to power –EngineerACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE: Unintended shootings, undeserved deaths Related posts April 29, 2017 Juliana Francis 0 I went into robbery after President Buhari came to power –Engineer A 26-year-old building engineer, Mr. Benedict Otanwa, has told operatives of the Special Intelligence Response Team... EFCC arraigns Jonathan’s doctor for N258m fraud

Skip to content Logo Home News Sports Metro Plus EFCC arraigns Jonathan’s doctor for N258m fraud Published April 26, 2017 Share Tweet Share Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned Dr. Fortunate Fiberesima, the ex-Chief Physician to former President Goodluck Jonathan. The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, that Fiberesima, who is also a former Chief Executive Officer, State House Medical Centre, was arraigned for an alleged fraud of N258.9m. The doctor was arraigned before Justice Peter Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on six counts bordering on money laundering. Fiberesima was alleged to have abused his position as the chief physician to the President in 2012 in awarding a contract to a company where he had an interest. According to the anti-graft agency, the defendant, who also parades himself as Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima, was initially meant to be arraigned by the EFCC on March 7, but the trial judge observed that, “all the charges are under the ICPC Act and not that of the EFCC” and consequently ordered that the charge be either amended or transferred to the appropriate authority for prosecution. At the resumed sitting on Tuesday, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him by the EFCC. One of the charges read, “That you, Dr. Fortunate Fiberesima (a.k.a. Fortunate David and David ThankGod Fiberesima), being the former Chief Executive Officer of the State House Medical Centre, Abuja and Chief Physician to the President, while employed in the public service, sometime in 2012, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, knowingly and directly held a private interest in the contract for land reclamation at the State House Medical Centre, Abuja in the sum of N258,950,000, which contract was awarded to T. E. & C Limited, a company in which you were a director, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.” Counsel for the defendant, U. B. Eyo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in liberal terms. He said the accused person had no previous criminal record and he would always be available for his trial. Counsel for the EFCC, Y. Y. Tarfa, did not oppose the bail application. Justice Affen ordered that the defendant should continue on the bail condition earlier granted him but added that he should submit his passport to the court registrar. The case was, thereafter, adjourned till June 6, 2017 for commencement of trial. Copyright PUNCH. All rights reserved. Skip to content L BREAKING: Court grants Nnamdi Kanu bail Published April 25, 2017 Share Tweet Share Nnamdi Kanu in court Ade Adesomoju, Abuja A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted bail to the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on health grounds. Justice Nyako however barred the IPOB leader from granting press interview while on bail. The judge also gave a stern warning to the defendant not to participate in any rally or be found in a crowd of more than 10 persons in the course of the bail. She however refused the separate bail applications filed by the the IPOB leader’s co-defendants. The accused persons charged along with Kanu and who were denied bail by the judge were the National Coordinator of IPOB, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe; an IPOB member, Benjamin Madubugwu, and a former Field Maintenance Engineer seconded to the MTN, David Nwawuisi. The court also in a separate ruling rejected the application by Kanu and two of the co-defendants seeking the setting aside of the court’s earlier order granting protection to prosecution witnesses to enable them to testify behind a screen or in mask as well as using pseudonyms to refer to them during proceedings. Kanu who had been in detention since 2015 was granted bail on Tuesday following the application filed by his lawyer after part of the charges filed against them were struck out by the court. Justice Nyako noted that she had observed that Kanu was always having to sit down in the dock whenever he appeared in court, a development which she said could be an indication that he could be suffering from an ailment that could not be treated in prison. She therefore granted bail in the sum of N100m with three sureties in like sum. The judge ordered that one of the sureties to be provided by the defendant must be a highly placed person such as a senator. She directed that the other must be a highly recognised leader in the religion being practised by Kanu. When asked by the judge in the course of reading the ruling, Kanu said he was practising Judaism. The third surety, according to the judge, must be a resident of Abuja and who must have a landed property in the Federal Capital Territory. The court fixed July 11 and 12 for commencement of trial. Meanwhile, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State was at the Federal High Court in Abuja to solidarise with Kanu on Tuesday. Fayose was already seated in the courtroom for over 30 minutes before Kanu and his co-accused were produced in court by prison officials at about 10.05am on Tuesday. Trump should revoke visas of corrupt Nigerians – Campbell Published April 23, 2017 Share Tweet Share BAYO AKINLOYE The United States-based think tank, Council on Foreign Relations, has called on the US President, Donald Trump, to revoke visas of corrupt Nigerian politicians and work with President Muhammadu Buhari to fight corruption in the country. Trump was also advised to collaborate with the South African President, Jacob Zuma. The organisation, however, warned the Trump administration to be prepared to accept blowback from powerful Nigerian political officials. In the latest CFR report released this month, ‘How the Trump Administration Can Help Combat Kleptocracy in Africa,’ co-authored by a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, the think tank noted that kleptocracy undermined US interests across sub-Saharan Africa. According to the report, a policy of combating corruption across the region will strengthen US national security. The report recommended that the Trump administration should establish an inter-agency working group to make full use of the US anti-corruption policies and procedures that are already in place to pursue country-specific strategies in Nigeria and South Africa. The report, otherwise referred to as the ‘Corruption Brief,’ said, “First, the working group should ensure that an anti-corruption strategy is shared by the whole government, including the Departments of State, Treasury, Justice, and Homeland Security, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Such an approach should use anti-corruption tools such as the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which provide the US executive and judicial branches jurisdiction over illicit money that passes through the US financial system, no matter its origin, destination, or beneficiaries. “The working group should collaborate closely with the Buhari administration as it seeks to repatriate stolen funds that are sheltered abroad. In South Africa, the working group should make its expertise on prosecuting money laundering and other white-collar crimes in a sophisticated financial environment available to anti-corruption NGOs, the courts, and members of parliament. The working group should ensure that US efforts in the two countries are coordinated but reflect the important national differences; a one-size-fits-all approach should be avoided.” As part of its recommendation, the report urged the Trump administration, with guidance from the working group, the US embassies in Abuja and Pretoria, to revoke visas of corrupt Nigerians and South Africans. “The purpose of this action would be to underscore that corruption has personal consequences even for those in the previously protected political classes. To that end, the Trump administration should work to speed up the slow and inefficient visa revocation procedure. US embassies in both countries should publicise the policy of revoking the visas of those credibly suspected of criminality. Identification of those whose visas should be cancelled will be easier in Nigeria, where corruption is widespread and open. “The Donald Trump administration should start with Nigeria and South Africa. They are Africa’s two largest economies, and each country is ostensibly democratic, though some institutions are still fragile. Reflecting the importance of both countries to the United States, President Trump telephoned Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and South African President Jacob Zuma during his first fortnight in office, making Buhari and Zuma the only sub-Saharan African leaders with whom he has been in personal contact,” it said. Man sues ex-wife for wedding expenses Published April 21, 2017 Share Tweet Share A divorcee, Yusuf Saidu, on Friday approached an Upper Area Court at Karu in Abuja to seek the refund of the money he spent on the wedding of his former wife. Saidu is pleading with the court to compel his ex-wife, named Habiba, to refund some N400, 000 he spent on their wedding three years ago to enable him to marry another wife. He told the court that he and Habiba got married in 2014 and that Habiba got tired of the union early this year and divorced him. Saidu said that before the dissolution of the marriage, they had relocated to Abuja from Kaduna State but that Habiba sued him at a court in Kaduna. “My lord, I need the exact sum of N400, 000 to marry a new wife. “I don’t want any amount less than that because the marriage did not last long and for the money I spent not to be a waste, I need full refund. “We were also blessed with a two-year-old boy. I want to have his custody. “I am not the one that said I am tired of the marriage but my ex-wife, so I need full refund of all my expenses during the wedding,” Saidu pleaded. Counsel to the respondent, Mr Abidan Aminu, noted that his client received the court summons with shock. He told the court that the marriage was dissolved by a Sharia Court in Kawo, Kaduna State last month. “The summons is coming less than a month when the court at Kawo granted my client’s request on grounds of gross domestic violence visited on her. “The court also awarded the sum of N70, 000 as compensation to be paid by my client to the plaintiff being the exact amount of dowry paid on her. “She had paid the money through the court. “I was also surprised to find out from the court in Kaduna that he refused to come and pick up the N70, 000 until we were served this summons in Abuja. “Another surprising thing is that he did not heed the advice of the court to appeal its judgment at the Sharia Court of Appeal in Kaduna and he failed to also seek legal knowledge on the issue. ’’ He urged the court to award Habiba N20, 000 as compensation for expenses and inconveniences caused to her by the actions of Saidu. However, the Judge, Abdullahi Baba, in his ruling, struck out the case for lack of merit. The judge said that the matter was filed at the court as a fresh matter and that was why it was entertained. Baba advised Saidu to seek redress on the matter in the state where the divorce was granted. “You (plaintiff) are not supposed to bring this matter here since it started in another state. “I am certain that the judge of the Sharia Court in Kaduna would have told you in his judgment that you have a right to appeal within 30 days that the judgment was given. “If you are not clear with any language of the court, seek professional opinion. “I will advise you to go back to Kaduna where the matter started and appeal at the Sharia Court of appeal if you are not satisfied with the judgment given, ’’Baba ruled. He, however, did not award any compensation to Habiba.
