Child Rights activists, civil rights groups to stage protest in Lagos if Baba Ijesha is not prosecuted

Purported  efforts  from any quarter to prevail on the police to release an alleged peopdophile Olarenwaju James a Nollywood actor and comedian will be resisted as child rights advocates  and civil rights groups are set to stage protests in Lagos State if the embattled actor is not prosecuted for allegedly defiling a 14 year old girl in a space of seven years.

The police in Lagos arrested and detained James popularly known as Baba Ijesha  for allegedly defiling the  14 year old girl since she was 7 years old. The girl said to be the foster daughter of Nollywood actor and comedian Princess Adekoya was exhibiting signs occasioned with an abused child, she was failing in school woefully, depressed and sad  which promoted Princess Adekoya to probe and the cat was let out of the bag when she confessed that Baba Ijesha who is a family friend  to Princess   had sex with her and also used his car key to insert in her virginal.

Following her confession, Baba Ijesha was set up in Princess's house where he was said to have been captured in a CCTV allegedly  romancing and defiling the girl police spokesperson CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said.  Following his arrest, there been efforts to put the blame on Princess Adekoya and ensure Baba Ijesha is released allegedly  by his friends, and colleagues in the movie industry  . Sections of the media have taken to write-ups to rubbish the efforts of the police at the Gender Unit SCID Panti led by CSP Margaret Ighodalo and her team investigating the case.

It was gathered that the Commissioner of Police CP Hakeem Odumosu met with the parties involved in the case in his office on Wednesday where it was gathered that the police would allegedly release Baba Ijesha due to the ongoing Judiciary Workers strike while some reports have it that the case of defilement cannot be established.

Following this , civil rights groups and child rights advocates plan to protest if Baba Ijesha is released today( Friday).

The coordinator of the child  right  groups under the auspices of Advocates For Children and Vulnerable Persons Network  ACVPN Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile said " Right activists plan to protest today ( Friday) if the police released Baba Ijesha and not prosecuted. I have to stand them down if not the protest would have began but we felt we need to see how the CP Hakeem Odumosu will handle the matter since he called the parties to his office. There are pressure on him to release Baba Ijesha but our stand is that he must be prosecuted. We ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE PERSONS NETWORK ACVPN totally contemn this arm twisting of existing Laws that clearly states categories of punishment accrued to various Offences.Lagos state Ministry Justice in last few weeks through it Social Medial Handle published. punishment for various Offences such as Armed Robbery/ Cultisms, attracts between 15,21  years jail term respectively with no option of fine or probation now those individuals who often boast and wreck havoc, with so much IMPUNITY would think twice before they misbehave.DEFILEMENT/Rape now attracts life in imprisonment in Nigeria ,  some cases have gotten such sentences across Nigeria.

" Defilement in Lagos a State regarded as the Centre of Excellence should raise it Operations beyond reasonable doubt.Been a Celebrity does not make one above the law, we watched keenly at way Investigation of Baba Ijesha case presently handled by the Gender/Anti-Human Trafficking SCID PANTI and I must confess we need raise our hat for their performance devoid from any of sentiments.

Roberts Kelly popularly known as R.Kelly the famous American musician tagged as SURVIVING R. KELLY is currently serving his time in the American correctional CENTER for his Pedophile offence , American Government didn't protect him because he was famous despite his contribution to the American Entertainment industry.

Baba confessed to the crime and a proven medical evidence is available to back up it's really a Show of shame some Nollyhood Actors are still in a state of denial and showed solidarity with Baba Ijesha .

Our take on this case we call on the Commissioner of Police Cp Hakeem Odumosu to maintain a high level of integrity and discharge of his lawful duty in abeyance to the existing Laws , Child Rights Acts 2007, The Violence Against Person's Prohibition Act (VAPP 2015) The Lagos State Child Rights Law CRL 2007.

It should be noted that Survivors of such crimes can only be of sound mind  when justice is duly served Baba Ijesha should face the consequences of his actions because injury to one is Injury to all. Princess should not be blamed for any reason because Pedophile is not written in any body  face.

The CP Lagos is Lucky to have radical investigators as Gender Unit head both State Command and SCID PANTI they they should be encouraged and not discouraged by power that be.

We categorically state clearly if Baba Ijesha is released tomorrow as Permutated by a section of the Media it would mean all that we have been doing on Gender Based Violence , Amount to nothing and a waste of resources.

The UN Women and Girls Initiative Spotlight Initiative is a waste resources if  justice is not served on this case, Also it would take us 20 years backward of ground Zero as the International Priority action on End Violence Against Children that Nigeria adopted 2016 amount to nothing.

To those who are calling and working tireless with so much propaganda to frustrate this case , your efforts cannot  withstand the unjust because our part is like a shining Star .

We call on all State Actors and Non State Actors to SAY NO TO ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN.

Great Laws don't bring Great Men but Great Men  Bring Great Laws courtesy Aristotle the great Philosopher.

This is Our Stand on the case of Baba Ijesha and other

cases in the Custody of Lagos State Police Command''.

Also a activist  Chidera Ochagwu said On Baba Ijesha's case.Reports reaching me from trusted sources says that some actors are  working tirelessly, trying to use money, plus back up in high places to change the facts, trying hard to bring up another narrative and trying to make people believe and say that Baba Ijesha is impotent.

With the back up of high ranked individuals, they are working to make sure the case is swept under the carpet.

We know that Gender Focal person is justice driven. We also know that the IG won't meddle with things like this.

I am using this medium to call on everyone, all concerned individuals and organizations to put pressure on this case .Justice must be served right. We won't watch and we cannot afford to watch this monster be let loose".

Also Yoruba actress Iyabo Ojo is also seeking justice be served when in a live Instagram she confronted her colleague Yomi Fabiyi for his perceived support for Baba Ijesha.

Also, the AuntLanda Bethel Foundation condemned the defilement in an official Press Release as prepared by Dr Yolanda George-David  of Auntlanda's Bethel Foundation on behalf of Princess Damilola Adekoya (@PrincessComedian).

While we wait and trust that justice would prevail, it is important that we get the facts right.

"Days ago, the news of popular Yoruba actor ,Olarenwaju James Omiyinka popularly known as Baba Ijesha, raping a young girl of 7 hit the internet and since then, there’s been chaos. It's no longer news that I don't have biological children of my own so imagine how sad I am that the girl in question (who I would like to keep her personal information private)  is one of my 6 adopted children (3 boys, 3 girls) Their parents trusted me to train them properly and didn't want me to feel alone. Now that the incident is public, it all feels surreal but very painful. I can't believe someone I tried to help when I was at my lowest point in life could do this. Reading the false news that he raped her continuously for 7 years after the initial Sexual Defilement that took place 7 years ago is also adding to my mental health breakdown.

Truly he defiled her in my sitting room years ago when I went downstairs to lock the gate after my aunt who had come to console me on the collapse of my marriage and loss of baby (her other siblings had gone out to play at the end of the street). She said after cleaning certain liquid (we suspect was sperm and blood) from her Bum and his body, he warned her not to tell anyone and that it was nothing. In fact, he came the next day to make sure she had kept quiet. When he was leaving he asked her to follow him to the car to pick a nylon of fruits for everyone, that was when he used his car key to sexually assault her again. After those two occasions, he completely avoided coming to my place but called anytime he was in need.

Fast forward to when my friend came around on Friday, April 16, 2021. she found me in a foul mood and went on to ask what had happened. I explained to her the same gut feeling I had been having for 7 years that something was wrong with her but it was not spiritual won't go away. She then offered to talk to her and that was when all the secrets came out.

On one hand, we are a bit relieved and her parents are especially grateful to God that we now know the root cause of declining grades & sudden change in behaviour. On the other hand, it's so painful knowing that she had to bear all these by herself. Her innocence was stolen in less than 4 minutes. I truly can't find the right words to describe how deeply hurt I am.

These parents showed compassion by allowing their kids live with me so I could experience motherhood. I protected and cared for them to the best of my ability but Lanre made me question my sanity as a mother.

I still can't get over the trauma of having to watch her on CCTV just so we could get proof. She was so scared before he arrived and we had to reassure her that we would come in before he could hurt her. She dreads him so much to the point that when she recognized him in a movie he and I featured in 2019, even her brothers couldn't console her.

We pray for justice and plead with the general public to respect our privacy as we are going through so much already. Thank you all for your continuous prayers and emotional support. May you never have to weep over your children. May God grant those of us looking for the fruit of the womb everlasting joy. I strongly believe God does not sleep."

POLICE DISMISS  THREE OFFICERS FOR  STEALING N153,000

Three policemen allegedly  involved in the forced extortion of one hundred and fifty three thousand naira from one Sheriff Adedigba who claimed to be a Lagos State University LASU student  have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
The three policemen identifed by Ogun State police command Spokesperson DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi as  Inspector Sunday John, Sgt Jimoh Asimiya and Sgt Solomon Adedapo were alleged to have forcefully extorted the said amount from the victim while he was traveling from Abeokuta to Lagos.
The statement read " Having heard about the incident on social media, the commissioner of police CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun ordered the immediate arrest and detention of the officers involved in the dastardly act. The three policemen were quickly identified and apprehended.
The money was recovered from them and returned to the victim. They were subsequently arranged for departmental orderly room trial on three count charge of Corrupt practices, Discreditable conduct and Disobedience to lawful order.
They were found guilty of all the charges, and subsequently dismissed from the Force to serve as deterrent to others in their shoes.
The victim, who was also present to give evidence was full of praise for the commissioner of police and the management team, for their prompt response  to the incident, which he said rekindled his hope in the Nigeria police force.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun has appealed to members of the public to always endeavor to report any act of misconduct from any officer of the command to him personally, or through any of the principal officers of the command, as such will be treated with utmost urgency.
He also warned officers of the command to desist from any act capable of tarnishing the image of the command as such will not be condoned".

Police arrest Baba Ijesha's accomplice in rape of 14 year old girl.

The last is yet to be heard in the case of a Nollywood actor Olarawanju James popularly known as Baba Ijesha  48 alleged sexual assaults on a 14 year old girl.
Painstaking investigation  by policemen attached to the Gender Unit  SCID Panti Yaba led by CSP Margaret Ighodalo has unravelled another suspect who was also allegedly defiling the14 year old  girl. The suspect identifed as Daramola is said to be a close neighbour and friend.
Sources said Daramola lives close by  and was trusted as a family member but sadly he too was allegedly defiling the survivor by forcing her to fondle his penis when nobody was around and he was alone with the girl.
Sources also added that other women have come out to say Baba Ijesha allegedly raped them.
A source who requested anonimity said '' Big shots in Nollywood have been calling to kill the story. Some others are blaming Princess for the defilement saying she is not vigilant but the  truth is that this is a clear case of betrayal of trust. What people don't know is that Princess paid Baba Ijesha's  WAEC and his education in the university. She is his guardian. She  saw he is talented and helped him to where he is today but Baba Ijesha is an ingrate who  was busy sleeping with  the survivor and using his car keys to penetrate her.The second suspect Daramola is a close neighbour and seen as a brother but he  betrayed the trust and has been sexually assaulting the survivor by telling her to fondle his penis when he was alone with her. It is sad that instead of facing the issue of defilement, some persons are blaming Princess. All this while she was concerned about the girl and noticed she was not okay but people kept telling her that it was spiritual issues the girl had and she kept praying for her not until the bubble burst and the girl spoke out that she was being defiled".
It was gathered that CSP Margaret Ighodalo the head Gender Unit SCID Panti is leaving no stone unturned to get to the root of the matter despite calls from supporters of the embattled actor who are calling on the police to release the CCTV camera which allegedly exposed Baba Ijesha.
Reacting to the incident Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile , the coordinator Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN said " How can anyone in his or her right senses ask  the police to release the CCTV that exposed Baba Ijesha. This is a video that catch him pants down  in the  act molesting a child and people want that kind of video to be in public domain?" . We commend CSP Margaret Ighodalo and her team at the SCID Panti for carrying out a thorough investigation. We learnt more women are speaking out that Baba Ijesha sexually   abused them, whole others  accused  him for raping  their maids . A second suspect molesting the survivor was identifed as Daramola has been apprehended by the police "

How Baba Ijesha allegedly defiled minor with his car key.

----- Child rights advocates want him  probed for alleged abuse of children.

A 14 year old girl  who was subjected to horrific sexual assaults  when she was 7 years old and in the  course of this painful experience, she has become withdrawn, sad and depressed.
Sadly, a Nollywood actor Olaranwaju  James 48  popularly  known as Baba Ijesha is alleged to be the defiler. James a talented comedian, actor and producer was  alleged to be  living a double life as a role model and  pedophile

His alleged sexual assaults on a fellow producer's foster  daughter who had trusted him as a brother and friend has not only left his fans and colleagues in the movie industry shattered but has brought to the fore the ugly rising cases of girl child sexual assault which has reach an epidemic  level  said child rights advocates.
According to investigations, what  led to James ' arrest for alleged child defilement began as a case of sexual harassment at the Sabo police station.
It was gathered that the foster mother of the survivor  began to notice signs occasioned with an abused child and she decided to probe further.
Her fear that her child was a victim of sexual assaults by a trusted "brother" came as a rude shock which led her to report to the police. The case was eventually transferred to the Gender and  Human trafficking Unit SCID Panti Yaba Lagos State  and following a test conducted on the girl at  Women at Risk International Foundation WARIF,  result shows she was not only defiled but seriously wounded.
James who had thought his crime against the girl would go undetected as he had allegedly threatened  her  not to speak out was  and this time around a CCTV camera installed in the survivor's mother's house  captured him in the alleged act of sexually assaulting the girl a source said.
James, following his arrest, it was gathered confessed to the crime and revealed he used car keys and fingers, his penis  to penetrate the girl in her mother's house  when no one is watching. He allegedly stated that the defilement began with him forcing himself on her and  inserting keys and fingers into the victim private part the source added.
Condemning the act, Mr. Ebenezer Omejalile the coordinator of Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN berated  those supporting  the embattled Nollyword actor. He said " This is a classical case of a celebrity who is a role model but living a double life. James is a pedophile. He confessed to the sexual assaults on the girl and also test result by WARIF  shows that the girl was not only defiled but has been going through hell in the hands of Baba ijesha. Anybody saying that he was framed should shut up as evidences abound that James is a pedophile and kudos to the police officers at the Gender and Anti Human trafficking unit State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti Yaba led by CSP Margaret  for the painstaking investigation on this matter. It is sad that the girl's pain and the trauma she is going through do not bother people but they are supporting a child abuser who had damaged this girl for seven years. Is it became he is a celebrity? What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Those calling for his release should stop as we are in support of the police in the investigation and we will see that he is duly prosecuted".
Speaking on the need for parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children and wards,Mr.  Omejalile said '" Do not trust anybody as a parent. The best role model is you. Keep a close watch on your children and wards. Experience has showed that sexual abuse on children is done by close friends and relatives, colleagues and people the child trust. We will ensure that the case is duly prosecuted without any  favour.
Investigation further show that the police are quizzing Baba Ijesha to find out if there are other children he had sexually assaulted". Omejalile added. .

How it happened
At Gunpoint, Policemen in Ogun State,  Force LASU Student To Transfer N153,000 Via POS.

“Later on, they asked me to open my bank app, where they saw a balance of N288,000 and told me they would collect N250,000 out of it even without telling me what I did wrong..."

Gun-wielding officers from Owode Egba Police Station at Isiun area of Ogun State  stopped  Hezekiah Oluwaponmile on his way to Abeokuta, from Ibadan Oyo State on 24th April 2021.

The Lagos State University (LASU) student said the officers, armed to the teeth, led him out of the car and asked what he does for a living.
“I told them I am a LASU Student they told me to unlock my phone but I refused; they threatened to kill me if I didn’t cooperate with them. They brought out a shocker, so I obliged.”
The officers asked me how many bank accounts I had and how much was in each of them.
“I told them I had two, GT bank and Union bank.
So I opened my phone due to the threat from them and upon going through it, I was asked to pay the sum of N1,000,000 but I told them I didn’t have up to that amount.
“Later on, they asked me to open my bank app, where they saw a balance of N288,000 and told me they would collect N250,000 out of it even without telling me what I did wrong.
I begged them that I needed the money for some things; they insisted on collecting #150,000.
“Then they asked me to give them my ATM card; I denied having one, so they took me to a Paga shop they have connection with. The Paga man collected a fee of N3,000 after negotiating from N5,000. On a final note, I did a transfer of #153,000.”

The transaction receipt of the money transferred showed Ajayi Abayomi Oluwafemi with account number 0131834643 with Union Bank as the receiver of the extortion.

Hezekiah likened the activities of the officers to armed robbers, said he was sure the Point of Sale (POS) operator was a collaborator with the accused Policemen.

“The Paga guy asked me to delete the alert message. He also asked me to delete the receipt on the app but I refused.

CISLAC Decries Lack Of Value For Human Lives ,Urges Govt to set up Commission on  Protection of Civilians and Civilian Harm Mitigation in Armed Conflict

A non governmental organization  Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC is extremely worried about the rising cases involving killings of civilians in Nigeria. The NGO said human lives is valuable and should be protected from wanton death.

CISLAC stated this during a second round training for journalists  titled " Interaction with media  on  Protection of Civilians, PoC, and Civilian Harm Mitigation, CHM in Armed Conflict" held   in Lagos recently supported by the  Open Society Initiative for West Africa, OSIWA.

The training which is aimed at engaging Crime and Defence journalists to  report on the need for  protection of civilians PoC legislation for the country, protection of Civilians, PoC, and Civilian Harm Mitigation, CHM.

Auwal Musa Ibrahim (Rafsanjani) the Executive Director  CISLAC while condemning the worsening insecurity in the country said human lives must matter and this  rests on the government to ensure no live is taken arbitrarily.

He condemned the abduction of students and the incessant banditry the country is experiencing.

He said,”It rests on the government to  deploy official resources  both human and financial intelligence to ensure that we bring an end to this constant and regular abduction of children.

“They’re depriving them of going to school and already we are in crisis. Nigeria has the highest out-of-school children and coupled with all the people that are being displaced by insurgency, by violence in Nigeria, a lot of young people are roaming on the streets, they have become orphans and allowing this people to be kidnapped, abducting these children, disrupting their school is  disrupting their psyche, creating social vices and also helping criminals to recruit them. Secondly, it is also helping criminals that are taking children for rituals. Alot of multiple problems involved in this and that is why Government must make a deliberate effort to ensure that this ends.  Whoever is involved, government must go after these people.

“And again, if government is having shortage of human and intelligence capacity to deal with this, that is why there’s a bilateral with other countries who have similar experiences that have been able to overcome this.

“They should seek for support in order to end this miserable, constant abduction and kidnapping of Nigerians who are already living  miserable life".

Mr. Salaudeen Hashim Programme Manager for CISLAC said there is no better time to set up a commission for civilian harm mitigation than now instead of focusing on providing relief for victims of humanitarian disaster, government should begin to place premium on human lives.

"We need to negotiate somehow. If you are not paying cash, then you should be able to offer some level of amnesty that would provide a way , you have respect for  lives in captivity, but not necessarily giving money. We have a ministry in charge of humanitarian disaster management ,why can't we have a commission on civilian harm mitigation during conflict. That way the commission will be responsible in ensuring that lives are not lost because live is precious.

He added that criminals live among people but protection is needed for informants.

"Communities are deliberately not volunteering information because of the threat they got,  so they fear the bandits more than they fear security agents.

“Every government intervention has always focused on the urban. Our problems are rural, we need to find rural solution.  I like the position of not paying ransom. Unfortunately, if they are going to negotiate, it is not necessary they are going to negotiate based on paying ransom but there are other tools for negotiation. It might just be something else and that would actually keep the lives of those people who are in captivity going. It is a strategic political approach".

We followed due process in selecting Lenuwa of Ode Omi  Oba Adekunle Folailu Hassan - Oshoteku II

By Patience Ogbo

Ogun Waterside Local government council has debunked accusations making the rounds on social media that due process   was not followed in the  final selection of the Lenuwa of Ode Omi  Oba Adekunle Folailu Hassan - Oshoteku II.

Calling the publication as handiwork of mischief makers , Comrade Femi Onanuga the Transition Chairman Ogun Waterside  Local government area in a  press statement on Friday states " This is to clear the air on the final selection of the Lenuwa of Ode Omi  Oba Adekunle Folailu Hassan - Oshoteku II. The attention of the authority of Ogun Waterside Local government  had been drawn to a foul cry and fictitious ranting of some agent provocateur over the selection   which was done in strict conformity with the chiefs laws 2006, directives and supervision of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs.

Oba Adekunle Folailu Hassan" Oshoteku II was elected by 2/3 majority of Kingmakers present at the selection process which commenced at Ode Omi town hall.

That a singular candidate pooled 50% of the total vote out of five candidates shows the popularity of the candidate and the credibility of the selection process.

That the selection process was concluded in the Council's premises because of security threat doesn't invalidate nor make the process less credible. It is noteworthy to mention that the appointments of Oshoteku I in 1939 was concluded in the Awujale palace at Ijebu Ode"

Prominent Odeomi sons and daughters and indeed the majority of the citizens are happy and satisfied with the selection process, only a disgruntled few are sad, unhappy and mourning a process overwhelmingly commended"

According to Admiral Gambo, the induction of NNS LANA to Nigerian Navy will enhance the Service capacity in the provision of survey services and charting which are crucial to safe navigation for improved maritime security. The Chief of the Naval Staff also said that NNS LANA will serve as a force multiplier in Nigerian Navy’s ability to project naval power for enhanced maritime security in the nation’s maritime environment and the Gulf of Guinea. He equally noted with great delight that the acquisition could not have been possible without the support and commitment of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari whose desire is for the Nigerian Navy to have the requisite capability to meet her constitutional mandate for the nation’s economic prosperity.

Additionally, Vice Admiral Gambo commended the entire NNS LANA ship company for their good conduct since their arrival in France recalling that there has not been any adverse report of any sort. He also applauded them for being very cooperative with Messrs OCEA (the French company that constructed the ship), which has been very instrumental to the completion of the project.  Intelligence driven community policing with  accountability will be our strategy says IGP Baba

Acting Inspector-General of Police, said he has unveiled a new policing vision and crime fighting strategies for the Nigeria Police Force.  Nigerian Navy takes delivery of new offshore survey vessel

By Patience Ogbo

The Nigerian Navy today in Saint Nazaire, France took delivery of its first ever purpose built Offshore Survey Vessel, ‘NNS LANA’.

Speaking at the Flag Transfer Ceremony (FTC), the minister of defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (rtd), represented by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo stated that the new vessel was conceived as a replacement to the previous NNS LANA, a survey ship that was decommissioned about 10 years ago.      Magashi who was the special guest of honour at the event added that the occasion marked a great milestone in the fulfilment of the dream of not only replacing but, enhancing navy’s survey capability.

The new vessel is expected to fill the void created following the decommissioning of the previous NNS LANA.

Highlighting the import of having a survey vessel like NNS LANA, the minister said that survey services and charting waterways play a crucial role in ensuring safe navigation as well as delivery of maritime security.  “Hence, NNS LANA will not only enhance the safety of Nigeria’s maritime environment but the ship will serve as a critical component in the projection of naval power for enhanced maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. It will also play a critical role in protection of maritime resources and preservation of law and order at sea, thus contributing significantly to promotion of global maritime commerce”, he said.

He lauded president Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment towards the recapitalization of the Nigerian navy fleet.

The minister also lauded Ambassador to France, Dr. Modupe Irele, the management and staff of Messrs OCEA and all others who have contributed one way or the other towards the change of Flag Ceremony. Again, he congratulated the Commanding Officer, Captain AB Mahmud and his ships’ company as the pioneer crew of the brand new masterpiece as she begins her voyage into the seas.

Speaking further at the event, the minister explained that the choice of Messrs OCEA by the navy to construct the new NNS LANA was based on its impeccable track record of high quality ship building capacity as well as the belief in the company to adhere to agreed time lines.  “Suffice to state that the construction of LANA by Messrs OCEA is much more significant bearing in mind that this has been achieved despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, Major General Magashi (rtd) congratulated Messrs OCEA for this feat. He equally noted with delight that the acquisition of NNS LANA brings to 18 the number of OCEA platforms in the Nigerian Navy’s inventory and also the Company was recently awarded the contract to construct a 35m Hydro boat to complement NNS LANA.

“Notably, the construction of the Offshore Survey Vessel 190 MKII (NNS LANA) commenced in December 2019 and the project was divided into 4 major milestones which were the completion of the deck molds, completion of hull blocks, hull assembly on the main deck and the delivery and installation of the main engines at the shipyard.

“These milestones were the benchmarks, which determined the level of work achieved at each stage of the project. The building process was successfully completed and the Ship was launched on 24    September 2020 at Les Sables d’Olonne, France. The new Ship with a visual call sign A499 was named NNS LANA apparently conceived as a rebirth of the former Nigerian Navy Ship LANA (A498), which was decommissioned”, he said.

The new NNS LANA (A499) is designed and purposely built to enable the NN conduct hydrographic and oceanographic surveys. It is also capable of conducting geophysical studies, search and rescue operations as well as patrol duties. The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art modern survey equipment as well as a well-equipped 7.6m surface vehicle for shallow water surveys.

Furthermore, the ship has an Automatic Weather Station (AWS), wet and dry laboratories, scientific and technical workshops as well as operating and processing rooms for survey data. The machineries include 2 x MTU engines, 3 x CAT main generators/one emergency generator, electric propulsion system and other auxiliaries. The electric propulsion, which is operated at survey speed is particularly installed to minimize distortion of data due to machinery noise. The Ship has a maximum speed of 14 knots and a capacity of 50 crew.

NNS LANA was handed over to the Nigerian Navy in France on 15 January 2021 after the provisional acceptance trials was concluded. The crew training commenced in January 2021 and ended on 12 April 2021. The change of flag ceremony marks her readiness to embark on her maiden homebound voyage to Nigeria. Expectedly, NNS LANA would join the Nigerian Navy Fleet in May 2021.

It is envisaged that the rebirth of NNS LANA would afford the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Department the leverage to successfully and systematically conduct hydrographic surveys and charting of Nigeria’s waters. It would also afford Nigeria with the opportunity of keying into the General Bathymetric Charts of the Oceans (GEBCO) Seabed 2030 project and the Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) synthesis project which would ultimately facilitate Nigeria’s accomplishment of its obligation under SOLAS Convention in accordance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s deliberate and sustained policies on maritime safety and security.

Dignitaries at the event included the Nigerian Ambassador to France, Dr. Modupe Irele, the representative of the French Navy, Vice Admiral Oliver Le bas and the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, who represented the minister of defence. Others were the CEO OCEA, Mr. Roland Joassard and representative of the ministry of defence, Major General Benson Akinroluyo.

OPD SECURES N1.5 MILLION COMPENSATION FOR CLIENT

Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD) has secured a favourable landmark judgment and compensation in a case involving its client, Muraina Taiwo and Nahman Construction Ltd.

According to the Director, Office of the Public Defender, Dr. Babajide Martins, Justice Mustapha Tijani of National Industrial Court, Lagos Division, has ordered the defendant, Nahman Construction Ltd to pay the sum of N1.5 million to its former employee, Muraina Taiwo, as compensation for trauma and pains suffered.

He added that the Court also ordered the defendant to pay the claimant`s salary from August 2015 to the date of judgment delivery.

The Director explained that the claimant, Muraina Taiwo, was a casual labourer at the defendant’s construction site at the Landmark Event Centre, where he had an accident in September 2015. He was rushed to the hospital and surgery was carried out on his leg after the payment of the hospital bills by the defendant.

Dr. Martins said the defendant refused to pay for a second surgery on the claimant after he was informed by the hospital that another round of surgery was required to correct the injury to his knees, adding that stoppage of the claimant’s salary, despite non-termination of his employment, compounded his situation.

This

Mamud Hassan

Head of Public Affairs Unit Public Defender said In a bid to seek redress and justice, the claimant hired a lawyer that filed the matter in court in 2016, but the lawyer stopped coming to the court due to unpaid bills. The claimant`s case was on the verge of being struck out by the Court, when it was referred to the Office of the Public Defender to avail him free legal services”, the Director explained.

“The OPD, in line with its statutory responsibility of defending the rights of defenseless residents of the State, swiftly deployed some of its best hands to represent the claimant and sought for various reliefs in court on the claimant’s behalf. It was the tenacity, discipline and uncommon professionalism exhibited by the OPD Counsels during the hearing that resulted in the favourable judgment for Muraina Taiwo”, Martins asserted.

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the case despite the fact that the claimant’s case was referred to OPD at short notice for free legal assistance, the Director enjoined Lagos residents to always take advantage of the free legal services to protect their rights.

He urged employees having any dispute with their employers on issues bordering on compensation, gratuity, non-remittance of pension and wrongful termination of contract of employment to come forward for free legal assistance and representation.
