A yet to be identified man escaped being beaten and burnt to death after he was a apprehended for allegedly stealing a phone.
The incident happened at the Agbowo community in Ibadan Oyo state on Monday Narrating the incident, an eyewitness who requested anonymity revealed ,, I sat down waiting for my customer infront of the Christ Apostolic church by the Fire Service Office at the Agbowo shopping complex when I saw two men on commercial motorcycle double crossed a bike carrying a man. The rider that double crossed slapped the passenger on the other bike and he fell off the bike. The bike fell and so they held on to the passenger that they slapped and started calling him thief. Commercial motorcycle riders , drivers and other people rushed to the scene and started beating up the alleged thief. They beat him and stripped him naked. Some of the drivers who rushed to the scene brought out cutlasses while others came out with fuel that they want to kill the alleged thief and set him ablazed . As God could have it, one of the Road Transport executives and his members rushed to the scene and stopped the mob. He led the alleged thief away, naked , because the mob had stripped him naked,,
One of the commercial motorcycle riders stated ,,We were at our park Infront of the university of Ibadan when a woman started shouting that someone had snatched her phone. The woman was on the phone when the thief snatched it from her. The thief ran away and jumped on a bike.We chased the bike and double crossed it. That was how we got him. He was shouting thief too. He told the bike man conveying him that he should quickly take him to Bodija Market that something was waiting for him. All in a ploy to escape but we catch up with him and recovered the phone. ,
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Oyo state police command SP Adewale Osefiso said" We got information about the incident and quickly mobilised our men to the scene. Luckily, the suspect was not set ablazed. Normalcy has returned to the area and our officers are investigating to find out where they took the suspect to so we can take him into custody".
