POLICE ARREST FLEEING SERGEANT FOR SHOOTING HIS GIRLFRIEND

The Lagos State Police command has arrested the fleeing SGT Eze Aiwansone,  attached to the Special Prorection Unit (SPU) Base 16, Ikeja, for the shooting of his girlfriend, Joy Eze.

The incident occurred on 8th October, 2020, at Opebi Ikeja Lagos when the lovers were said to be involved in a heated argument. The said sergeant shot his girlfriend in the mouth and fled the scene of the shooting. Leaving her to bleed to death.

In a statement by the Lagos state police command Spokesperson SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday, the suspect, who had been on the run, was arrested by his elder brother who is an inspector of police in Lagos State and handed over to the command.

The State CID Panti has taken over the case on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police has however warned police personnel in Lagos State to desist from any act that can  tarnish the image of the police; and be committed to the principles of Community Policing for better service delivery and public safety in the state.

Criminal is fighting back says DCP Abba Kyari as Man he arrested and arraigned for fraud accused him of extortion

Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of the Intelligence Response Team  IRT DCP Abba Kyari has accused  one Mr. Afeez Mojeed who claimed to be a Lagos-based businessman of blackmail

Mr Mojeed an alleged  accused fraudster had brought a petition before the Lagos State Judicial panel on  endsars  as he  claimed DCP Kyari allegedly extorted him of over 40million. He claimed this extortion took place in 2014 when Kyari was officer in charge of the now disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS) in Lagos.

Response from Barr Hamza Nuhu on the Blackmail attempt on DCP Abba Kyari by a yet to be convicted fraudster Afeez Mojeed who was earlier charged to court.

Barr Nuhu said one of such attempts is the concocted stories and false allegations against one of Nigeria’s very best and most decorated police officers of all time DCP Abba Kyari, former OC SARS Lagos State being promoted by one Mr. Azeez Mojeed as contained in a petition he wrote to the newly formed Judicial Panel of Inquiry And Restitution For Victims of SARS set up by the Lagos State Government.

In his petition against DCP Abba Kyari, Mojeed had alleged among other accusations that Kyari had forced him to sign off on the withdrawal of 41 million naira from him, taken away his SUV car and other personal effects while he was detained for fifteen days.

It is curious that Mojeed who claimed that he was eventually set free by the court did not in anywhere in the petition state the crime he was arrested for.

that the accused fraudster, Afeez Mojeed defrauded 94 million Naira from a victim. He was arrested 6 years ago and 41 million Naira was recovered from the proceeds of the crime which he voluntarily paid the victim (Owner of the money) back directly through the victim’s account and also he confessed on video and in written format that he bought Honda Accord 2008 Model and 7 million Naira Landed property from the 94 million Naira he defrauded and that he has squandered the remaining 31 million Naira on hotels and girlfriends.

Furthermore, he submitted the car and land documents which was registered as exhibit before he was charged to court and after some years he was discharged not acquitted from court because the complainant was not coming to court as most Nigerians do.

The land document and car that were registered as exhibit are still kept with the exhibit keeper in Lagos State.

According to our source, criminal will be re-arrestd and charge to court again as he was not acquitted by the court of law also the complainant has assured the Police that he is in Nigeria now and he is ready to be attending the court process until his case is concluded this time around because he said he will not leave his balance of 31 million Naira to the said fraudster.

Mr. Mojeed was arrested in 2014 on accusation of defrauding a Nigerian Businessman based abroad of almost a hundred million naira. When he was arrested by the them special anti robbery squad (SARS), he was said to have paid some part of the money directly to the account of the man he defrauded even before he was charged to court and that is the money he is now claiming Kyari forcefully took from him.

Further investigation into these allegations revealed that the SUV car Mojeed accused Kyari to have personally taken from him was seized and had been at the Police exhibit garage at Ikeja Lagos till date.

Anybody who had followed Abba Kyari impeccable and unsullied record of integrity and incorrigible track record will readily tell you that Abba Kyari’s tenure as the OC SARS Lagos Police Command was one of the brightest era of crime fighting in the history of policing in Lagos State and Nigeria in general.

DCP Abba Kyari’s outstanding performance during this period earned him over three Governor Commendation Awards, several consecutive Inspector General of Police Commendation Awards, Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria CRAN Star Awards for Gallantry and Impeccable Service among countless awards by Civil Society and media Organizations.

Consequently, any attempt to tarnish the image of this Nigerian Super Cop who in some quarters has gained an heroic stature for his service to his fatherland will be an exercise in futility. Nigerians should also be alert and be on the lookout for more of these spurious and unsubstantiated allegations by vengeful criminals and other shady characters who will want to take advantage of current developments to take their pound of flesh from police officers who had brought them to face the consequences of their criminal actions and deeds.

With 50k now a Lawyer can write Pettition for you based on any false allegations you make without prove against anybody and you can leak it to the media and if the person in question have a name or he is known In the country it will sell. But legal actions will always be taken because criminals like this has to serve as deterrents to others Barr. Nuhu pointed out.

If it’s true that somebody defrauded him of 41million Naira, what is he doing for the past six years, Why didn’t he go to the ICPC, EfCC or Court as he also mentioned.

Meanwhile, some Human Right Lawyers have declared on their own that they will sue the fraudster for defamation of character this Friday.

Endsars Protest: Lagos CP ,Nigerians take to trekking,

Lagos CP ,Nigerians take to trekking, food prices skyrocket  as endsars protest spreads

Several endsars protesters today took to the Airport Road in Lagos to join other Nigerians demanding an end to police brutality.
The protesters blocked all roads leading into and out of the airports as they danced and sang to various music

The protesters were seen with the Nigerian flags and placards as they call on banks and other institutions to join in the protest.
One of the protesters was heard saying
" This is enough. Enough is enough. How long will they take us for granted".
Others who were not protesting on the streets threw their weight behind the protesters.
One Lilian said "  This is good. I support them. If not for my work, I would have joined them to protest. The suffering is too much ".
Another onlooker said " I want to join them. I am thinking of it and will soon".

Trekking galore

Following the endsars protests, major roads have been blocked by rampaging youth. This has caused gridlock on the roads  and residents have taken to trekking to get to their various destinations.
Mr. King who works in the Airport said " I am tired. Last weekend , on Friday to be precise, I walked from Mile 12 area of Lagos State to Ikorodu where I reside. On Saturday, I walked from Ketu community  to Oshodi area before I could get a bus going to the Airport. The endsars protesters are coming out in their numbers everyday and hoodlums have taken over. The government should stop this imminent disorder and lawlessness".

A motorist said "I was heading to the international Airport to pick up my friend when I saw the trailer they used to blocked the road at 7and 8 junction. This has caused gridlock since 9.30am. I have been held up for more than one hour. Please we need them to protest peacefully".

Food prices increasing.

While protest continues unabated, its effect is taking a toll on already exhor
bitant prices of food in the country as blockade of major high ways like the Lagos Ibadan expressway and other roads have been on standstill.  This has made food trucks to be held in traffic for days.
A house wife in Mowe community in Ogun State said " The protest is really making life that is already hard to be harder. Imagine me buying a satchet of tomatoes for N150. This same satchet of tomatoes was sold for N60 two weeks ago. Same with rice , beans and other foodstuff but since the protest started, prices of commodities have skyrocketed. The traders in the markets said those persons bringing  foodstuff from the north cannot get to the south west due to gridlock and some of them are afraid  .Some of them bringing in perishable goods are lamenting that the foodstuffs have rotten on the way '"
LAGOS CP COMPELLED BY PROTESTERS TO TREK FOR 10 KM

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, on Sunday, 18th October, 2020, was compelled by aggressive #endsars# protesters at Okota to trek  in companies of his senior officers for more than 10 kilometres in order to pay a visit to the assaulted grandma, Mrs Durojaiye Olaleye, who was assaulted severally on monday 12th October, 2020, as captured in a viral video on the social media.

The Commissioner of Police, who had earlier been denied access at the Muritala Mohammed Airport tollgate in Ikeja by endsars protesters, ran into a similar barricade at NNPC junction, Okota, where the hyper-aggressive protesters insisted that CP Hakeem Odumosu and team highlight from their official cars and trek that long distance despite series of explanation and appeal on the command's mission in the area.

The Commissioner of Police, like every other officer in Lagos State, who has been professional in tolerating and managing several harassments, intimidations and provocations from the protesters, obliged and trekked for peace to reign.

The visit to the assualted grandma was to sympathise and apologise to her and her family members and assured them that the arrested police officer, *SP Tunji  Ajakaiye*, second-in-command at the disbanded Anti Kidnapping Unit, Surulere, who assaulted the grandma has been queried and will face the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) for appropriate punishment.

The police chief also condemned the unprofessional conduct of the senior officer which is unbecoming of his status and contrary to the IGP's modern policing principles.

While assuring Lagosians of his commitment to sanitise the command, CP Hakeem Odumosu encouraged members of the public to report all unprofessional conducts of police officers and men to the command for appropriate disciplinary actions.

Suspects “disappearance” in SARS custody rises concern .

This was a story I published in National Mirror Newspaper  in 2015 .

Read till end you will see the forwarded message

----- want IGP to investigate extra-judicial killing , torture
By Patience Ogbo
Family members of suspects detained in SARS custody are  calling on the Inspector General of Police Mr. Solomon Arase to investigate the “disappearance” of their relatives arrested by SARS operatives.
One of the complainants Mrs. Bose Bajulaye, 56  has written a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, through a Lagos based nongovernmental  organization Society For Love and Justice(SLJC).
Mrs Bajuilaye who spoke with our correspondent said her 34 year old son, Joseph Bajuilaye was allegedly killed by SARS operatives after he was arrested over allegation of  stealing a tricycle .
“My son confessed to stealing the tricycle and stated that he used the proceeds to rent an apartment through an estate agent, Mr. Oluwalopese of 118, Isuti Road, Odo, Igando, Lagos.
“The estate agent confirmed that men from SARS Ikeja brought my son to his office in September 2014  and he was made to refund the sum of N160,000 my son paid for the apartment. He said he made the refund at SARS office at Ikeja  but to my shock, SARS operatives who have been denying that my son was in their custody, informed me that my son was killed when he was attempting to flee when they took him out for  investigation. How can he attempt to escape  when they chained him with handcuff  ? Why  would they shoot and kill him? I feel that the SARS operatives led by the former OC Abba Kyari  are hiding my son somewhere and they are lying that they killed him. I cannot come to term that he was killed when attempting to flee. I expected SARS operatives to charge him to court for stealing   because I cannot support his bad behavior but for them to tell me that they killed him is unbearable for me. If they had charged him to court, which is the normal process, there is a possibility that he can repent  and become a reformed person in prison but they are claiming that he is dead . I am devastated . I want the IGP to investigate  my son’s disappearance and if indeed they killed him, those policemen should be made to face the law for murder .”
Doctor Adeolu Olusodo the president of SLJC expressed sadness over the alleged killing of Joseph.
He said “ Nigeria is not a banana republic where anything goes. There are laws guiding our country. SARS operatives have no rights to engage in extra-judicial killing. We are calling on the police authority to look into the killing of Joseph  while in SARS custody. The reason they gave for killing him is not convincing. We are demanding that the police authority sets up a panel to  investigate   his murder”
Also, the family members  of a suspected Kidnapper Afam Nriezedi  has gotten a court order to force SARS detectives to bring their brother Afam to court after efforts by the family and their lawyer to see him had proved abortive for months.
Before the family got the court to intervnene, they had written a petition to   the IGP and  president Muhammadu  Buhari to order SARS operatives to unravel the mystery behind  their brother’s whereabouts since he was arrested last year by SARS operatives earlier in the year .
According to Rita Okoro Nreizedi sister, Nriezedi    was arrested along side  four other  suspects Kelvin Igah, 39; Ogechi Igah, 32; Victor Igah 35; and Chukwuma Kingsley, 43 over the  kidnap of one Chief Idowu Coker, owner of Dapsey Oil, where they collected a N20 million ransom .
According to the police, the suspects were arrested  by SARS operatives led by SP Abba Kyari, when they stormed the gang's hideout at Isheri-Oshun, Ikotun, and Lagos’ after the gang allegedly kidnapped a business man.
Okoro  in a petition through a nongovernmental organization Network For Police Reform in Nigeria(NOPRIN)  stated that “Afam Nriezedi was arrested  with the other suspects  whom he is now being lumped together with- contradicts the earlier police's account captured in the news report sponsored by SARS indicating that Afam Nriezedi's sisters were held hostage by SARS operatives who forced them to take them to a hospital in Ikorodu where he had gone for surgery and where he was arrested. Later they said other suspects during interrogation at SARS,  confessed that Afam Nriezedi was the mastermind who led them to kidnap the two oil dealers. Afam Nriezedi,  had spent   months in unlawful detention, none of his family member or a lawyer has been allowed to see him. Why has it been difficult for SARS to charge him to Court with the evidence they claim they have or disclose his whereabouts to his family and legal representative. After our complaints, a ‘police team from Abuja’ approached us and told us to meet them in a hotel in Lagos. The policemen said we should make a false statement changing the facts of the case and we refused. Why did SARS initially tell us that he was wanted for allegedly being in possession of 4 AK47 rifles belonging to the police and later made a volte face causing the publication of a news report that he was an informant to a kidnap gang?”
NOPRIN in its petition to the police authority  accuse SARS of extra –judicial killing of suspects in their custody  .
One of such cases of extra – judicial killings by the police   according to NOPRIN NOPRIN   was the alleged killing of one Mr. Eze Okon by SARS operatives conducting a raid in Lagos.
A petition by NOPRIN detailing how Okon was allegedly killed stated “On March 8, 2013 some operatives of SARS, Ikeja after six hours of drinking alcohol at Olak's Hotel, shot and instantly killed one Mr. Eze Okoro in front of his residence at No. 1, Oguntolu Street, by Meiran Bus Stop, Alagbado, Lagos. The victim had just returned from work and was seating out with his wife and other neighbours in front of their residence, close to the hotel, when the alcohol-soaked operatives emerged from the hotel and started shooting sporadically, created panic among the residents and in the pandemonium, one of the officers accosted Mr. Okoro who joined others to seek cover. Despite his explanations that he was a resident, pointing to his house, the operative shot and murdered the businessman in cold blood.

In an initial but unsuccessful bid to cover-up, SARS sponsored the publication of a news report claiming that the victim was killed by armed robbers who engaged them in a shootout. Witnesses later narrated a different account of how Okoro was killed, contradicting SARS”.

Noprin further gave a detailed account on the alleged killing of one Mrs Fumilayo by SARS operatives in Ogun State .
“ Mrs. Funmilayo, a mother of three was killed by the police in Sagamu, Ogun state while taking refuge in a bush to avoid being caught in the cross fire between the police and an armed robbery gang. The police shot the woman after the shootout without listening to the unarmed woman's explanations that she was a staff of a nearby Demirs poultry farms. She further explained to the police that she was on her way to buy fuel for the Farm's generator before she ran into the bush to avoid being hit by a bullet. A witness- one of the vigilante members who joined the police to engage the robbers, said that  'police tied some amulets and charms to her arm before bringing her out from the swamp. Then they shot her by the side after bringing her out to give the impression that she was killed during a shootout. We have the picture taken before they tied the arms band and shot again.' She was paraded, with her charms-laced body, as the leader of the robbery gang.

Giving further accounts of SARS alleged killings, NOPRIN  report stated
In Benin City, on November 24, 2013, police officers of the Edo State police command, extra-judicially killed Mr. Samuel Imaikop, a well know farmer with his three hired labourers on their way to his farm at Ute village. The police paraded them as armed robbers, in spite of evidence contradicting police's claims that the victims were killed when they engaged them  in a shootout.
Also, the case of one Ekenechukwu Uwakwe, a motorcycle spare parts dealer in Lagos who had travelled to his village in Southeast Nigeria for his traditional marriage was informed that he was wanted by SARS Ikeja for armed robbery, kidnapping and fraud. In his absence, his sister and her Pastor who visited her were arrested and detained until Ekenechukwu returned to Lagos on January 4, 2014 and presented himself to SARS, confident that he would clear himself of the allegations against him. SARS collected the sum of N175, 000 to release his sister and her Pastor and then detained him. By the time the information reached NOPRIN on October 9, 2014 he had spent 10 months in SARS cell without being charged to court and denied access to family and legal counsel. NOPRIN contacted the O/C SARS and inquired about the case. The O/C SARS, after inquiry, told NOPRIN that Ekenechukwu would be charged to Court that same week. He was eventually charged to Court without evidence.
Okechukwu Nwanguma  the National Coordinator of NOPRIN while commending the police for reducing crime in the country, however calls on the police authority to check increasing  cases of torture and extra-judicial killings among officers and men of the Force especially by SARS detectives .
“NOPRIN appreciates and commends the efforts of the police to tackle crime and criminals and to secure the society in the face of inadequate resources, equipment and motivation. However, it is NOPRIN's conviction and contention that the police cannot continue to commit crime in order to solve crime. Fighting crime is not a substitute to respecting human rights and the due process guarantees for crime suspects and persons under custody.

NOPRIN's contention is that SARS should not continue to trample on the Constitutional rights of detainees by detaining them indefinitely and denying them their right of access to family members, legal counsel and doctors. The law requires of the police to promptly  grant suspects bail or charge them  to Court if they have credible evidence to secure conviction; The police cannot also continue to hide under 'national security' as a pretext to circumvent the law, commit crime, abuse their powers,  violate human rights and undermine the due process and  rule of law.  The police, as a creation of the law, charged to enforce the law, cannot go outside the law to enforce the law.SARS has, in their anti crime operations, become notorious for breaching all legally established procedures for arrest and detention, as well as international human rights standards for the treatment of persons in custody. Lagos State Police Command and SARS, in particular, should focus on resolving these puzzles and contradictions, rather than resorting to instigating newspaper reports attempting to divert attention by accusing 'influential person' of 'being on the neck of the Lagos state Police and government to release a kidnapper'. It is for the Court, not the police, to determine the guilt or innocence of a crime suspect”
Following countless petition to the IGP over the alleged unlawful killings and rights abuse by SARS detectives, the police authority said it has taken steps to check abuses of suspects in SARS custody.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Investigation, Dan’azumi Doma, made the disclosure during a routine visit to Lagos .
DIG Doma stated that the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has split the Special Anti-Robbery Squad into two units with a view to checking human rights abuses.
The DIG said   “The I-G has just revisited the operational method of SARS across the country either at the federal or state level.
“He is doing a lot to ensure that human rights abuses are corrected.
“If you are in touch with the Lagos State Police Command, based on reactions by members of the public, the officer in charge of SARS was redeployed to Abuja.
“The I-G said the same officers cannot make arrest and investigate the same case, so, he split SARS into two units.
“One is to be in charge of operational activities, while the other section will investigate the case.
“The people who go out to make arrest will not be the same people to carry out the investigation,’’ he said.
“By doing so, you are isolating the operational men from human rights abuses and other allegations. This thing is going to flow down from federal to states, including divisions if such units exist at that level.’’

POLICE ARREST 72 OLD MAN FOR ALLEGEDLY DEFILING 7 YEAR OLD GIRL.

Police in Ogun State have arrested a 72  year old man  for allegedly defiling a 7 year old girl (name withheld).
The suspect Ishola Tijani was arrested following a report by the mother of the victim who reported at Iperu police station that she went out only for her to return and found her daughter feeling uncomfortable.
When she made an enquiry from the little girl,  she explained to her that it was the old man who lured her into his room and forcefully had sex with her.
Upon the report the DPO Iperu Division quickly detailed his detectives to the scene where the randy old man was promptly arrested. The victim was taken to an hospital where it was confirmed that the girl has been actually defiled.
The suspect has made confessional statement admitting the commission of the offence.

Man to spend 21 years in Prison for defrauding US based businesswoman and circulating her nude pictures online

An Ikeja High court has sentenced one Adesanya Femi Paul to 21 years in prison.
The accused was arraigned over allegations he duped a  businesswoman of N75m and then posted her nude photos on Facebook.
The business woman was identified as  US based business woman, Mrs Oluwatoyin Akinwole

It can be recalled that Mrs Akinwole was  made to look as if she had taken her own life after her  nude pictures were released online and a story was made  that she committed suicide by jumping into the Third Mainland Bridge Lagoon in an  attempt to blackmail her.
Following her report in 2017, the police arrested  two suspects  one Awojomi Ganiu aka Alfa Oris, 51, and Otunba Paul Adesanya 54.

Narrating how she fell victim to the fraudster, Akinwole said: “ I am a business woman and I live in Texas, United States of America. Sherrifat lives in the USA and we were close friends when this issue started and she was the person who linked me to the Alfa(Ganiu) in Nigeria, but I wasn’t talking to the Alfa.  She then traveled to London, England in March 2017 to meet Otunba Adesanya, who she had an affair with and she called  and said that the Alfa told her that my death was imminent, except I perform some prayers.  ‘’While she was saying this, Otunba Adesanya, came in and told me that he knows the Alfa very well and that I should obey  him because he is very powerful and well known in Nigeria.  Otunba Adesanya,  also told me that he had several businesses in Nigeria including petrol filling stations in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.  Alfa Awojobi, was demanding N154,000 for the prayers and I told Sherifat and Otunba that I didn’t have such money and Otunba Adesanya offered to pay N100,000 for me, while  he asked me to pay the balance.’’

Continuing, she said:’’ I did what they said and Alfa started praying for me.  He did that until April, 2018, and he insisted that I must come to Nigeria for the final prayers.  I was really scared then and I didn’t want to die the way my younger sister died. I returned to  Nigeria and went straight to Alfa at Ijebu-Ode.  He asked me to take my bath before entering his house which I did and by midnight, he brought four men and they started praying for me.  Alfa then said he had seen more visions about  my husband and children and I ended up spending N1.5million at the Alfa’s place before  returning to America.  Otunba Adesanya,  then came in and told me that he wanted to invest my money in oil business using his petrol filling stations.  He took me round some filling stations in Ijebu-Ode and he was greeted as the owner.  He asked me to invest a huge amount of money and promised that after one month, I will get back my 50 percent of my investment as profit, and I trusted him.

‘’ I borrowed N30 million and the person who loaned  me the money paid it into his account.  One month after I gave him the money, I called and started asking about the business;  Otunba Adesanya, got angry and paid back the money into my  account. I was shocked and this made me believe and trust Otunba Adesanya, to be a kind of genuine businessman. Then, I pleaded and asked him to continue with the business and then he asked me to change the money into dollar which I did and I took the money to him.  Two months after then, when I tried to get back my money, he told me that the money I gave to him to invest into the business wasn’t enough and he needed money and I went on scouting for more money.  I continued to give him money until it reached a total of N75million. He also asked me to pay the sum of N31million through the Alfa’s account.

‘’ But on December 2017,  one of his boys called me on the telephone and told me that  I had been defrauded, then I arrested him with some police and  military men and they couldn’t recover my money. I also got him arrested with policemen in Osun and Ondo states, yet,  he went off the hook. Then, I brought in  operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to arrest him, and they recovered  21,000 nude photos and videos of various Nigerian women.  He claimed he was very sick and the EFCC granted him bail, but after his release he went  on the internet and published photoshop nude photos of myself and him, claiming that he had sexual relationship with me, which was a lie.   He was also the person who circulated the story that I had jumped into the Third Mainland Bridge Lagoon, over infidelity.  The EFCC  tried to caution him but he wouldn’t listen  because he wanted to blackmail me into stopping my case.  I was given the advice to go to the IGP IRT and report my case and they trailed and arrested the Alfa as well as Otunba Adesanya”.

Mariam K. Chamberlain$100,000 Award :CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:

ICRW is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Mariam K. Chamberlain Award, which honors the legacy of Dr. Mariam K. Chamberlain, a visionary who founded Re:Gender – formerly the National Council for Research on Women – in 1981.

Apply at http://www.wufoo.com/?t=o2j5o6

  • Award Background

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is a global research institute with offices located in Washington, D.C.; New Delhi, India; Nairobi, Kenya; and Kampala, Uganda. Our research evidence identifies women’s contributions as well as the obstacles that prevent them from being economically strong and able to fully participate in society. ICRW translates these insights into a path of action that honors women’s human rights, ensures gender equality and creates the conditions in which all women can thrive.

ICRW comprises social scientists, economists, public health specialists and demographers, all of whom are experts in gender. We are thought leaders driven by a passion to alleviate poverty and rectify injustice in the world. And we believe that women and girls – in collaboration with men and boys – are essential to the solutions. We know that when their quality of life improves, families are healthier and economies are stronger

In September 2016, ICRW merged with Re:Gender (formerly the National Council for Research on Women or NCRW) in order to pursue a global research and advocacy agenda focused on advancing women’s empowerment and achieving gender equality. ICRW is honored to carry forward the Re:Gender legacy, including its annual Mariam K. Chamberlain Dissertation Award, which pays tribute to Re:Gender's founding President, Dr. Mariam K. Chamberlain, who passed away at the age of 94 in April 2013. She was a true visionary whose contributions to the feminist and social justice movements are evident across the world by generations of women.

Mariam was a key force in shaping and launching the women’s studies and academic research movements in the United States and worldwide through her work as a program officer at the Ford Foundation in the 1960s and 1970s. She provided the strategic vision, funding and support to launch university and college-based centers and freestanding policy institutes focused on women’s issues. Mariam helped build a network of dedicated and accomplished leaders committed to advancing women, especially in academia, and helped cultivate lasting institutional support for their work.

In 1981, Mariam helped found Re:Gender (then NCRW) to further support the movement she helped to create. Under her leadership, Re:Gender increased and promoted research on women, built alliances for synergistic work, and advanced research into policy applications. Her vision has evolved into a dynamic network of thought-leaders and change agents working to ensure more fully informed debates, policies and practices, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and equitable world for women and girls, their families and their communities.
