WOMEN IN THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE ARE NOT SEX OBJECTS ---NGOZI BRAIDE, THE LAGOS STATE PPRO BY PATIENCE OGBO The Lagos State police spokes person Ngozi Conchita Braide is the first female image maker for the command . DSP Braide joined the Nigeria Police on the 15th of August 1996 as a Cadet Inspector. Before she was named the spokes person for the command, she rose to become a Sectional Head of Oil & Gas Fraud Section at Special Fraud Unit (SFU) 2007 till 2012 and earned a secondment with the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters. DSP Braide as the first female PPRO in Lagos State is the 23rd person to hold such office. In this interview , she spoke on the challenges facing the police force , the role of female police officers and the need for the public to have confidence in the police to tackle crime and criminality. How do you feel being the first female spokes person for the Lagos state police Command?DSP BRIADE : I do not feel anyhow because during our days at the Academy, we were given equal training , the same lecture , the same exams , I see it as one of those things What part of the country are you from? DSP BRAIDE: I am from Okigwe Local government council in Imo state How have you been working in a male dominated environment ? DSP BRAIDE: like I said, for the fact that I am here today, should tell you a lot. I have both men and female working with me and I do not feel intimidated in anyway. How have you been able to defend a Force generally considered corrupt by the public? DSP BRAIDE: the Nigeria police is a fragment of the society and we did not sprang up from nowhere. In all establishment there is corruption but because we have direct contact with the public, on a daily basis that is why people feel we are worst . Is it not the failure of the police to enforce law especially on corruption is why we have corrupt cases everywhere? DSP BRAIDE: How is it the failure of the police? We are from this society even the corrupt officers; the Force has its way of dealing with them. We have the IGP Monitoring Unit and other departments which check corruption and excesses in the Force . What reaction did you get from family members and friends when you told them you want to join the Police? DSP BRAIDE: It is the usual response of No!No!No! And their reason is because they feel the police is corrupt but those people who said no yesterday are the one saying yes now. Since I became the image maker, a lot of people have been calling me to say, we do not know that people like you are in the police and they want to join the police. So why did you join the police? DSP BRAIDE: It was not my making. I really did not want to join the police but one day when I was still in school, my mother told me that she likes the police and would like me to join as a cadet officer, so that was how I joined the police .Initially, I did not like it but I am grateful now and I have no regrets about joining the police. Would you allow your children to join the police? DSP BRAIDE: yes, I will advice my daughter to join if she wishes because it is a job I respect and love so much. I will encourage anybody close to me to join the police. There is this notion that female police officers sleep with their boss for promotion, what do you have to say about that ? DSP BRAIDE : This is a very big insult on the female police officers. Are you saying that the female police officers do not have brains? I do not know how you came about that information, because female police officers are hardworking and dedicated; they are also brilliant. How do you handle sexual harassment in the office? DSP BRAIDE: Sexual harassment is everywhere and just like I said about corruption. It is the weak ones who will allow themselves to be used .You are a journalist, have you not been sexually harassed ?So why point to the police . The truth is that people do not see anything good in the police so that is why they say negative things, but take the police from the stations, from the streets and from the community then you will know how important we are. These same people saying all the negative things about the police will be the first to call the police when they are in need. What is the challenge you face most since you became the PPRO? DSP BRAIDE : The major challenge I have face since I became the image maker is that my phone has been invaded. My phone rings nonstop and I have to answer it because I do not know who may be in distress: I am not complaining , I love what I do but like I said it is part of my work schedule and I am not complaining. There have been a lot of clashes in some areas ; what is the command doing to check the black spots in the state? DSP BRAIDE: Some of these things are communal clashes especially the Ilaja clash. We have APC stationed there and our marine police are patrolling the waters. We also have policemen from SARS, the Bariga anti-robbery squad, the RRS and APCs on ground to check violence in these areas. What is your advice to the public? DSP BRAIDE: The public should assist the police with useful information. They should be security conscious and report any suspicious movement to the nearest police station. They should have constant communication with their DPOs also. 2 attachments — Download all attachments View all images DSP NGOZI C BRAIDE.jpg 1117K View Download DSP NGOZI BRAIDE.jpg 939K View Download Reply Reply to all Forward PATIENCE OGBO Jul 3 (2 days ago) to citypridemag01 Police WOMEN ARE NOT SEX OBJECTS --- PPRO BY PATIENCE OGBOThe Lagos State police spokes person Ngozi Conchita Braide is the first female image maker for the command .DSP Braide joined the Nigeria Police on the 15th of August 1996 as a Cadet Inspector. Before she was named the spokes person for the command, she rose to become a Sectional Head of Oil & Gas Fraud Section at Special Fraud Unit (SFU) 2007 till 2012 and earned a secondment with the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters. HOODLUMS KILL PRINCE OVER LAND DISPUTE IN LAGOS . BY PATIENCE OGBO Barely two days after two persons were confirmed dead in a bloody clash at the Ilaja area of Lagos state over a sand dredging site, another violence , this time over land disputes has lead to the killing of one Ibrahim Balogun, a prince of Isheri Olofin community in the state . Prince Balogun, was said to have been attacked by hired hoodlums who were driving in a car while he was attempting to flee on a commercial motorcycle during the clash between residents of Idimu and Isheri –Olofin who had engaged one another in a fierce fight over landed property. The violence which started on Sunday left several persons injured while properties were also destroyed . The Lagos State Police spokes person Ngozi Braide confirmed the death of prince Ibrahim . It was gathered that violence erupted in the area on Sunday after a High court verdict in Lagos ruled that the disputed land located between the two communities at the Council Bus Stop and Arida area of the state belonged to the indigenes of Isheri Olofin. The verdict which was delivered in April this year was however appealed by the indigenes of Idimu who had been selling the land to prospective buyers . However, it was further gathered that indigenes of Isheri Olofin had stormed the area asking the residents to vacate the land as the land rightfully belonged to them. This did not go down well with the settlers in the land and a fight ensued as the settlers vowed not to leave the property they claimed they have paid millions of naira to purchase. It was in the wake of the forceful eviction led by several hired thugs that the said prince Ibrahim was allegedly killed. The violence also forced schools and several businesses in the area to hurriedly close down on Monday as the two feuding communities engaged one another with guns and other dangerous weapon. Though the police claimed there was no clash in the area, residents however appealed to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to wade into the matter in the interest of peace. " TREAT UNIVERSITIES LIKE LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL" UNIBADAN VICE CHANCELLOR University education in the country is facing mirage of challenges centered on poor funding and management . In this exclusive interview, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, MB BS, FMCOG, FWACS, expressed concern over poor. He also spoke on the “The UI glows project”, renaming of universities , while calling on the government to accord federal universities the status of a local government council . How prepared is UI to combat terrorists' threats, theft and other criminality in the country. Prof. Adewole: We have also adopted a comprehensive approach, which include networking with security agencies ,training and retaining of our security personnel, provision of equipment for campus patrol and monitoring, we are also engaging every member of the university community to be security conscious at all time. We are also at the verge of installing CCTV cameras in strategic positions on campus. The University of Ibadan is having constant electricity and water in the past one month after the students’ protest, what is different now? Prof Adewole: The twenty four hours electricity on campus is the outcome of a comprehensive approach to addressing the energy challenge in the institution. When we came on board on 1st of December,, we reengaged the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and also rehabilitated the 33KVA sub station so that the university can access electricity from his two main lines ,at Ayede and Ibadan north at Shasha. The line at the Ibadan North has been abandoned but we discovered this was a major source of electricity so we started the rehabilitation and we committed over 250million to ensure the lines are functioning. We are also made use of our four brand new generators which can produce about 8KVA . With these we also looked into local generation which is the use of the Inverter, so at night when all fail, our halls glow with the use of the inverter , University of Ibadan is the first to make use of inverter in the country. But we are not stopping on our oars as we also looking into our fourth leg of the comprehensive approach , which is renewable energy supply. With these, we can boost of twenty four hour electricity. How soon is the University of Ibadan set to achieve its target of a post graduate institution? Prof Adewole: We are looking at the next five years, for now the ratio of the postgraduate students to the undergraduates is 50/50, but we are targeting a ration of 60/40 , and in doing this, we are employing more graduate assistants, we are on the verge of building a PG library at Ajibode. We are also improving the Kenneth Dike library in order to make it visually accessible ,;also we are engaging with the private sector to build more hostels for our ladies ,we are also improving on the academics by upgrading our laboratories, lecture halls with electronic boards and teleconferencing . These are whole new areas we are working on. How will the University of Ibadan react to a name change like what the federal government did with the University of Lagos? Prof. Adewole : We will consult . We will appeal to the government because UI is a brand name and changing the name of a 63 years old man is rather too late. We will not support violence but we will appeal to the government to reconsider; and on the assumption that students who would have changed from UNILAG to UI due to the name change, I do not think this is necessary and moreover we have a quota for the university. Post graduate students complained of shabby treatment from staff. What is been done to address this? Prof. Adewole; our post graduate students are special and we treat them with respect. If there is any case of such, we will look into it to stop such from reoccurring . There is clamour for better funding for university do you has enough fund to run UI? Prof. Adewole: What the university gets is enough, if the federal government takes over the municipal aspect of running the universities. Utilities like roads, water, and electricity among others are not the business of the university. It is the duty of the proprietor which in this case is the federal government. I feel the university should be accorded the status of local government, where they get direct subvention to run their affairs . On our part in improving internal revenue generation, we are engaging in commercial fish farming, so that wherever there is water on our campus, you will see a fish farm, we are also looking into the future where UI will generate electricity for Nigerians. A lot is on the pipeline to achieving self sufficiency soon. With these, we can boost of twenty four hour electricity. * How soon is the University of Ibadan set to achieve its target of a post graduate institution?* *Prof Adewole:* We are looking at the next five years, for now the ratio of the postgraduate students to the undergraduates is 50/50, but we are targeting a ration of 60/40 , and in doing this, we are employing more graduate assistants, we are on the verge of building a PG library at Ajibode. *How will the University of Ibadan react to a name change like what the federal government did with the University of Lagos?* * Prof. Adewole :* We will consult . *Post graduate students complained of shabby treatment from staff. What is been done to address this?* *Prof. Adewole;* our post graduate students are special and we treat them with respect. If there is any case of such, we will look into it to stop such from reoccurring . *There is clamour for better funding for university do you has enough fund to run UI?* *Prof. Adewole:* What the university gets is enough, if the federal government takes over the municipal aspect of running the universities. *How prepared is UI to combat terrorists' threats, theft and other criminality in the country.* *Prof. Adewole:* We have also adopted a comprehensive approach, which include networking with security agencies ,training and retaining of our security personnel, provision of equipment for campus patrol and monitoring, we are also engaging every member of the university community to be security conscious at all time. We are also at the verge of installing CCTV cameras in strategic positions on campus. * The University of Ibadan is having constant electricity and water in the past one month after the students’ protest, what is different now?* *Prof Adewole*: The twenty four hours electricity on campus is the outcome of a comprehensive approach to addressing the energy challenge in the institution. Man arrested for killing five months pregnat wife By Patience Ogbo A middle age man, Kola Ajibola is in the police custody for allegedly killing his pregnant wife. The incident happened at Badagry area of the state on June 6th this year during a scuffle between Kola and his wife Fumilayo , who is said to be five months pregnant before her untimely death. Family members of the deceased alleged that Kola beat up his pregnant wife and shoved her in the process. The deceased was alleged to have fallen on a hard object in the apartment and sustained a major injury which led her to bleed from the nose. Seeing the harm he has committed, Kola was said to have taken his wife to the clinic but Fumilayo, a mother of one dead shortly after and the case was reported to the Badagry police station. The elder sister of the deceased who simply identified herself as Monisola said Kola molested Fumilayo in the past. “They have quarreled in the past and Kola has maltreated his wife. Just recently, my late sister reported his behaviour to one of our uncles and Kola was called and warned not to touch her again. It is sad that he did not heed the warning as he went on to beat her despite the fact that she is five months pregnant for him; she has a 7- year -old son and he is staying with the family since her untimely death.”Monisola said. Monisola however feared that the case will not be properly investigated by the police as she alleged that officers attached to the Badagry police station are frustrating the family’s efforts in getting justice. “This case was reported to the police Badagry police station and I was surprised when a police man attached to the station who identified himself as the DCO (deputy crime officer) called me and said that if we want the case to be transferred to the Homicide department at Panti Yaba, I should go to Panti and request for the signal so that the case can be transferred. Is it my job to ask for police signal before the case can be transferred for thorough investigation? We suspect a foul play by the police that they want to released the suspect without conducting investigation” Monisola said. When contacted, the spokes person for the Lagos state police Command, Ngozi Braide said the police will conduct a thorough investigation into the death. “There is no prank here and we are not covering anything. The suspect is in the custody of the police and the police officers at Badagry have taken the corpse for a post mortem to be conducted, as it is, they are carrying preliminary investigation into the case and as soon as this is done, the case will be transferred to the Homicide department at Panti Yaba.; a signal has already been sent to the police headquarters over the incident so there is no prank to release the suspect ”Mrs. Briade said . SCIENTIFIC DATA WILL BOOST GOVERNANCE --- BY PATIENCE OGBO For Nigerians to enjoy the dividends of democracy there is the need for government policies to be centered on citizens’ needs. This was the view of stakeholders at a one day event organized by AfroBarometer Network and CLEEN Foundation to brainstorm on possible survey questions that will impact positively on the lives of Nigerians. The stakeholders were drawn from the civil society groups, the media, the government and NGOs to discuss home grown questionnaires to be employed for the 5th round of the AfroBarometer governance and democracy survey in the country . CLEEN Foundation is working with AfroBarometer as the national partner. The survey will be conducted across the country from June this year and it is aimed at eliciting responses from Nigerians on wide range of issues about governance and democracy in the country . The stakeholders added as part of Nigerian’s home grown questions should also include agitation by Nigerians on fuel subsidy ,insecurity and how government is tackling Boko haram and other insurgencies in the country, epileptic electricity , bad roads , the aviation, electoral malpractices , among others. Katty Addy, the Outreach Co-ordinator for AfroBarometer stated that the survey is aimed at improving the living conditions of the ordinary man. “AfroBarometer has been conducting public opinion survey in Africa and this survey covers a lot of issues and the assessment of democracy , and governance . This survey helps to elicit answers from the ordinary man and their voices to be heard as the data gathered can be useful in formulating policies that are people centered . This is the 5th round of survey organized every three years and this survey will cut across 35 countries . Also, this round of survey will involve home grown questions, like the issues of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, insecurity among others. The survey helps to hear the voice of the ordinary man and what they feel about governance,”Addy said. Innocent Chukwuma , the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation stated that implementing people centered polices will enhance democracy and governance in the country. .“CLEEN Foundation has been partnering with AfroBarometer for the past ten years and we involved the stakeholders so as to improve on the questionnaires and make it more organized, this way, the issues they care about are included in the questions and the survey will be carried out on specific needs.” Mr. Chukwuma added that data from the survey will be made available to the government and other stakeholders for people centered policy formulation and implementation . “The survey is important because policies should be grounded on solid data to enable policy makers to address people centered policies . Also the survey will help policy makers to evaluate the impact of the polices on the lives of the people, that way, they will know where the problem lies and how to solve it.” Chukwuma said. Reacting to the importance of a governance survey, Akingbolahan Adeniran, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos state governor on Legal Matters stated that democracy will impact lives when objective empirical data based on the citizens’ opinion are employed by the government . “The Lagos state government has used data gathered by AfroBarometer and other such data for its policies and such data have been relevant because the more scientific we are in solving our problems, the more objective we are the better for us , as these data help government to look at problems objectively and what the survey does is to give us a broad overview of where the problems lie and how to tackle such problems objectively” . Police rescue man from kidnappers hideout as informant awaitS N.2m Xavier Ndah Police detectives attached to the Festac police command have rescued a victim and have arrested nine suspected kidnappers in their bid to collect ransome. It was gathered that police swooped on the men, just as they were threatening to terminate the life of their victim should he fail to produce a N10 million. However, while the kidnappers were waiting for the money mother luck made the victim identified as Arinze Igboba, as he found a piece of paper which he wrote a note and threw it into another compound begging for help. In the note Igboba had said that he was being kidnapped and may be killed any moment from that time as he was being held captive in one of the rooms. He asked any receiver of the note to have mercy on him by contacting the police with a promise that if he was being rescued he will pay the informant the sum of N200,000 . Police said Igboba tore the net in his detention room and threw the paper out of the window. His action we gathered yielded positive as a man at a compound close to where he was being detained took the letter to the police where Deputy Superintendent of Police S.P Mukaila from Ojo police station stormed the building located at Iba to rescue the victim while the kidnappers were arrested. However, the kidnappers we gathered are now singing a different tune as they were said to be in a business deal where Igboba has outsmarted them and escaped with the proceeds of the deal. It was gathered that the rescued man was kidnapped to enable him cough out the money he escaped with to enable it be shared accordingly. Another source said the kidnappers had paid Igboba the sum of N10m to enable him facilitate their getting visas to china which never came after several promises. The man was said to have deceived them that his Chairman who is supposed to be his kingpin in the business had been on a trip to China which he said he was waiting for his arrival before they start processing their visas. The men not convinced therefore decided to teach him a lesson of his life as members of the gang which include Tochukwu Okojie, Joel, Miamani Odiz, Evarest Okonkwo, Ikechukwu Obialor, Oforma Uguju and Emeka Ezeyum became fed up with his false stories. In an effort the rescued man we gathered in a bid to pacify them had earlier taken them to Precious Hotel, located at 422 Road, in Festac town and spent N100, 000 on food and drinks for them. It was gathered he was unable to pay his bills and he then offered to leave his car as collateral a decision which the police see as an indication that he also has a case to answer as he was hiding some facts from the police. The men we gathered had after helping themselves with his food and drinks had kidnapped him and took him to a house in Iba estate where he was being kept. The rescued man we gathered was tortured and he was made to signed a cheque of N10M to enable them cash it in the bank while others were waiting for the money. Igboba said he had no money in his account but he was forced to sign the cheque out of fear as they were using hot iron and knife on his genitals. According to him, even when one of them left with the cheque we was saying his final prayers because if they find nothing in his account they might come back to kill him until God gave him the sense which led to his rescue. Dan Okoro, the Area ‘E’ police commander has vowed to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion and has vowed to deal ruthlessly with any hotel proprietors that harbor criminals and kidnappers in their hotels or guest houses. Police we gathered are working on a clue that the gang are kidnappers who had involved in such bid apparently fighting over money Reply Reply to all Forward PATIENCE OGBO Jun 19 to xavier thank you On Tue, Jun 19, 2012 at 9:34 AM, xavier ndah wrote: --- On Tue, 6/19/12, xavier ndah wrote: From: xavier ndah Subject: POLICE RESCUE KIDNAPPED VICTIM IN LAGOS To: "sam POPOOLA" , "newrooms moment" , "EMEKA IBEMERE" , "sulaimon Alamutu" Date: Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 12:28 PM Police rescue man from kidnappers hideout as informant awaitS N.2mXavier NdahPolice detectives attached to the Festac police command have rescued a victim and have arrested nine suspected kidnappers in their bid to collect ransome. It was gathered that police swooped on the men, just as they were threatening to terminate the life of their victim should he fail to produce a N10 million. However, while the kidnappers were waiting for the money mother luck made the victim identified as Arinze Igboba, as he found a piece of paper which he wrote a note and threw it into another compound begging for help.In the note Igboba had said that he was being kidnapped and may be killed any moment from that time as he was being held captive in one of the rooms. NDLEA WORRIED OVER NIGERIANS IN FOREIGN PRISONS - GIADE The Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ahmadu Giade has described as worrisome the large numbers of Nigerians in foreign prisons. Giade who spoke at a media briefing in Abuja to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking said that the situation is demand the intervention of stakeholders as most of the drug convicts in foreign countries left the country in search of greener pastures but ended up smuggling drugs and giving the country a bad image. According to the Chairman, the Agency intercepted a total of 66,273kg of narcotics from drug cartels including 113.49kg of high grade heroin imported from Islamabad, Pakistan through the Tincan Island Port in Lagos. According to the Agency, 3,028 suspected drug traffickers were also apprehended while 686 culprits were successfully prosecuted since January 2012. The seized drugs include 64,966.092kg of Cannabis, 1,134.2kg of Psychotropic substances, 131.196kg of Heroin and 42.293kg of Cocaine. Cannabis farm land measuring 141.019 hectares were also destroyed. In addition, the Agency has so far publicly destroyed a total of 20,204.477kg of forfeited narcotics in Ogun, Benue and Kwara States since January 2012. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) country representative Ms Mariam Sissoko said that the UNODC is partnering with the NDLEA in the fight against illicit drugs in the country. In her words, “the UNODC has a good working relationship with the Agency in tracing precursor chemicals and execution of drug abuse preventive programmes” Sissoko stated. Giade explained that the United Nations has dedicated June 26 to the campaign for a world that is devoid of drug trafficking and abuse. In his words, “this practice dates back to December 7, 1987 when the United Nations General Assembly through resolution 42/112 took the bold initiative. The ultimate goal is to strengthen action and cooperation towards a world free from drug trafficking and abuse. It is our annual flagship event to sensitise members of the public on the hazards of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking”. The NDLEA Chairman listed the gains of drug control in the country to include United States Government delisting of Nigeria from the Drug Majors List and impressive operational results due to strict drug law enforcement also announced the theme of the celebration. The theme as chosen by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is Global Action for Healthy Communities without Drugs. The Agency also promised not to relent in the drug war. “Our strict compliance with law enforcement procedures has further weakened drug syndicates in the country. The borders will remain impregnable to drug traffickers. Nigeria will continue to win the war against drug barons and the tempo must be sustained. Drug barons must not smile to the bank while humanity is left groaning under the yoke of drug addiction and insecurity” Giade assured. Giade stressed that the battle to make Nigeria drug-free is an all-important fight. “Drug abuse is a problem that cuts across countries. Drug lords always seek to weaken institutions of governments for their selfish reasons. They recruit gullible and material seeking individuals as drug mules. Interestingly, regular arrests and seizures of illicit drugs have kept them under control” the NDLEA boss stated. The Agency noted that the country in the past two years has risen up to a new twist by drug barons following the discoveries of two clandestine laboratories in Lagos. “The trend is worrisome because drug barons now use residential houses for the illegal production of methamphetamine. Already the suspected operators of the drug production laboratories including three (3) Bolivians have been charged to court”. Giade promised to meticulously prosecute all persons arrested in connection with drug trafficking. In his words, “the NDLEA Act empowered the Agency with special powers to coordinate all drug control functions. It also stipulates 15 years minimum and 25 years maximum sentence for unlawful possession of popularly known drugs like Cocaine, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), Heroin, Cannabis and similar drugs. All persons arrested will be diligently prosecuted”. The knowledge of the dangers of drug abuse and addiction is crucial. Many people have fallen victim of drug misuse due to ignorance of the effects of drugs. Others were influenced by peers and close associates into taking rash decisions that made them drug addicts. Adequate public enlightenment is vital in attitudinal change campaign. We must discourage demand for drugs in order to render the narcotic trade less lucrative and demoralise drug cartels from drug production and trafficking. Significant progress has been recorded in the infusion of anti-drug abuse education into school curriculum. The Agency has attained 90 percent success in primary and secondary schools while that of tertiary institutions is over 50 percent. Drug addiction has no respect for social status or class. The NDLEA therefore called for collaboration. The weeklong programme of activities includes children/youth talk shows and drama competitions as well as anti-drug rallies. There will also be thanksgiving services in churches and mosques across the country. In addition, there shall be advocacy visits to opinion leaders and traditional leaders. The grand finale will feature public lectures and anti-drug enlightenment programmes on the 26th of June. Highpoint of events at the grand finale will be the public presentation of books on Drug Abuse Prevention and Management in the Workplace, Preventing Children from Abusing Drugs and Helping Drug Dependent Persons to Quit Drugs written a staff of the Agency, Dr. Martin Agwogie Martin.
