A nine-month-old baby boy has died after his teenage mum allegedly mixed his formula with fentanyl because she was tired and wanted a nap, according to police.

The infant was found unresponsive with no pulse at a home in Callahan, Florida, on June 26. Deputies attempted to revive the child using CPR, however, he later died at a hospital in Jacksonville, according to Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.

The boy's 17-year-old mum initially told investigators she had no idea what had happened, but her story changed over the course of subsequent interviews in the following weeks. Eventually, an autopsy revealed that the child had enough fentanyl in his system to kill 10 people.

On July 10, the medical examiner ruled the baby's death a fentanyl overdose. Just two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal, depending on a person's body size, tolerance and past usage, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

In an additional interview, the mum confessed that she was tired and wanted to take a nap the day her baby died. She admitted to filling a Mickey Mouse bottle with a mixture of formula, taking it to the bathroom where she found a pill bottle containing what she believed to be cocaine.

She added some to the baby's bottle. But it turned out to be fentanyl.

The sheriff reacted with horror during a press conference on Wednesday, July 12. He called the case "a terrible, sad, and extremely tragic incident."

Sheriff Leeper went on to say: "Our deputies respond to many situations every day, they see a lot. And it sometimes seems, over the years, that nothing surprises us any more.

"But every now and then something does happen which really you really can't explain, you can't make up. You say to yourself, 'What in the world were they thinking?'"

He said: "She laid him down in his crib to go to sleep and he never woke up. Who does that?"

"What mother would do that? That's not normal. It is sick. It's beyond my imagination why a mother would do that to her child. No one should lose their life to this terrible, deadly drug, especially an innocent baby."

Sheriff Leeper confirmed there were other adults in the house at the time but it appears the mother's actions were hers alone. He said: "Babies are our most vulnerable among us, they're solely dependent upon someone else for all of their needs, for everything."

"Unfortunately," said Sheriff Leeper, "some babies are born to individuals who have no business being parents," Leeper said.

The mum, whose name is not being released, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. The case remains under investigation by the Nassau County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families.
