Why I launched my book on Gender Based Violence on my 40th birthday celebration----- Barr. Ene Unobe

---Marks 15 years in the legal profession with family, friends

Mrs. Ene Sarah Unobe (Esq) was overwhelmed with joy and full of  praises to God as she celebrated   her 40th birthday on July 1st.  Barr Unobe who is the Chief Executive Officer of the International Centre for Human Rights Non-Violence And Safety Awareness (ICHRNVSA) based in Lagos Nigeria , also used the occasion of her birthday  to  launch a book  she authored titled ‘’ Gender Based Violence and related offences-  Prevention, Protection and Prosecution  at the Raddison Hotel, Isaac John Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

Barrister Ene Unobe whose birthday was on June 25th ,shifted the date forward to accommodate the celebration of her other achievements as she  expressed her appreciation to God for the triple celebration. She said,” I am thankful to God that I am presenting a book on gender based violence. It has been my heart desire to launch this book.  It has come to reality today and it is a triple celebration for me; my 40th birthday, book presentation and fifteen  years anniversary as a human right defender and as human right lawyer. I have been dealings with women, vulnerable groups, people with disabilities, women going through lots of violence.  Having a lot of experiences with the police, women and their challenges, I decided to write this book for people to read so that they can learn how to defend and protect themselves from gender-based violence as the book is a summary of my wealth of experience in my profession in dealing with gender-based violence and related offences in my fifteen years work. The book will be beneficial to all, as it teaches how to prevent domestic, gender-based violence, how to protect yourself and others from being a victim and how to prosecute offenders of domestic-based violence’’.

Emphasizing the need for all to be advocates against gender based violence and related offences, like rape, domestic violence, among others, Barr. Unobe said “If you are not a victim, you will learn how  not to become a victim. If you are a victim, you will learn how to get justice in the police station or criminal justice section. It will be beneficial to children and also talk about the effects of domestic violence on family and the society. The book is vast in dealing with all the issues of domestic and gender-based violence, as families will also be benefiting from it. We can’t reduce violence on the street or in the country without reducing violence in our homes. People promoting violence are victims from the home. Gender based violence at home escalates into street violence, societal violence and into terrorism. I advise every one, every family, the general public to get a copy of this book as it empowers the knowledge on how to prevent, protect and prosecute gender-based violence. If you see something, say something, do something. Gender-based violence is a monster”

.

Explaining why gender based violence against women is worrisome and needs to be nipped in the bud , Barr. Unobe said “My office receives

various complaints on human rights violations and gender- based violence especially violence towards  women and girls and they are  troubling. This is because  battered women would  rather bear the violence  as they do not want their abusive husbands to face  prosecution  due to cultural reasons and other reasons. This behaviour poses a lot of challenges to rights advocates and the law enforcement officers. Some of these women even with grave bodily harm, with blood dripping from their bodies following assaults they face in the hands of their husbands and partners,  would rather prefer you call their abusive husbands or partner  and threaten them to desist from harming them further  rather than prosecute such abusive men . These women  will cry and plead on the behalf of these men when the police eventually arrest such men. They can go as far as recanting their statements and turn around to accuse the human rights defenders of inciting them against their spouses. This such of scenario and others are in this book and how to tackle them’’.

Professor  Adedoyin Adelaja ,the Vice Chancellor of Littoral University ( ILEPS) Porto - Novo , Republic of Benin  who wrote the Forward of the book recommends the book and urges everyone to get a  copy as the book is a fresh insight of experience in tackling GBV from a human right defender with wealth of experience ." We know that sizeable proportion of women worldwide have experienced Gender based violence. However, this book exposed the fact that many women will not talk about the violence they are experiencing unless they are asked directly. In this book,  Barr. Ene  Unobe has positioned herself as someone whom women and girls including men facing violence can  discuss the issue with . This book is an expose' on how stakeholders can develop projects to assist victims of gender based violence and other related offences. She has dedicated a chapter of this book on how government can legislate to rescue the ugly situation. She also opined on how the law can help victims. This revolutionary book offers a blueprint for reform of expressive family laws in the variety of global context , secular, religious  and  traditional. I  recommend this book on  every bookshelf all over the world as this is the author's contribution to the fight against the menace of gender based violence".

Taking a look at the content of the book which has 121 pages and eight chapters, Chapter one talks about the " Meaning of Gender based Violence. Chapter 2 deals with the  " History of Gender based violence. Chapter 3 talks about " Understanding Gender based violence and other related offences" . Chapter 4 talks about "Effects of Gender based violence". Chapter 5 talks about " Victims of Gender based violence and attitude of perpetrators". Chapter 6 " Effects of Gender Based Violence on the family". Chapter 7 " Prevention of Gender based violence, while chapter 8 dealt on " Vital information on where to seek help for domestic violence victims.

Police arrest suspects for allegedly kidnapping children for rituals

Imo police parade two female child traffickers who specialise in stealing and selling children for labour, ritual purposes

The Imo State Police Command has arrested two women for child trafficking in Umuguma, Owerri-west Local Government Area of the state and rescued seven stolen children.

The child traffickers, Chinyere, 48, and Glory Okon, were said to have been running a baby factory under the guise of a motherless baby home in Umuguma,

Spokesperson of the command, ASP Henry Okoye, who disclosed this at a press briefing on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, said some of the stolen children have been reunited with their parents.

On interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of a criminal syndicate that specialised in stealing children from unsuspecting parents in Akwa Ibom and other parts of the country.

The suspects further said that the children are sold to buyers who either use them for child labour or ritual purposes.

Their confession led the police operatives to the baby factory, where seven stolen children and four pregnant teenage girls were rescued

"Some of the children have been reunited with their parents, while other victims are currently in a Government approved home for care and custody,” the PPRO added.

17 years old kills son because she wants to sleep

The 17-year-old mum made her baby boy a bottle of formula before going into the bathroom and finding a pill bottle containing what she thought was cocaine but turned out to be deadly fentanyl

A nine-month-old baby boy has died after his teenage mum allegedly mixed his formula with fentanyl because she was tired and wanted a nap, according to police.

The infant was found unresponsive with no pulse at a home in Callahan, Florida, on June 26. Deputies attempted to revive the child using CPR, however, he later died at a hospital in Jacksonville, according to Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.

The boy's 17-year-old mum initially told investigators she had no idea what had happened, but her story changed over the course of subsequent interviews in the following weeks. Eventually, an autopsy revealed that the child had enough fentanyl in his system to kill 10 people.

On July 10, the medical examiner ruled the baby's death a fentanyl overdose. Just two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal, depending on a person's body size, tolerance and past usage, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

In an additional interview, the mum confessed that she was tired and wanted to take a nap the day her baby died. She admitted to filling a Mickey Mouse bottle with a mixture of formula, taking it to the bathroom where she found a pill bottle containing what she believed to be cocaine.

She added some to the baby's bottle. But it turned out to be fentanyl.

The sheriff reacted with horror during a press conference on Wednesday, July 12. He called the case "a terrible, sad, and extremely tragic incident."

Sheriff Leeper went on to say: "Our deputies respond to many situations every day, they see a lot. And it sometimes seems, over the years, that nothing surprises us any more.

"But every now and then something does happen which really you really can't explain, you can't make up. You say to yourself, 'What in the world were they thinking?'"

He said: "She laid him down in his crib to go to sleep and he never woke up. Who does that?"

"What mother would do that? That's not normal. It is sick. It's beyond my imagination why a mother would do that to her child. No one should lose their life to this terrible, deadly drug, especially an innocent baby."

Sheriff Leeper confirmed there were other adults in the house at the time but it appears the mother's actions were hers alone. He said: "Babies are our most vulnerable among us, they're solely dependent upon someone else for all of their needs, for everything."

"Unfortunately," said Sheriff Leeper, "some babies are born to individuals who have no business being parents," Leeper said.

The mum, whose name is not being released, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. The case remains under investigation by the Nassau County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

A 17-year-old female student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Ahiante Victory Ehiremen, has been suspended indefinitely by the Institution’s management after allegedly conniving with her boyfriend to lure and rob a Lagos-based businessman of N1.5 million.

The businessman was reportedly admiring Ehiremen on Facebook.

The student was paraded at the Osun State Police Command alongside her boyfriend, Ariyo Ayobami and one Opeyemi Adeleke for armed robbery.

Ehiremen confessed that she lured the businessman to the house of her boyfriend where they forcefully transferred money from his bank account to theirs. The 100-level student said she got N40,000 from the deal.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday, UNIOSUN’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye said Ehiremen with Matric Number 2022/42652 is a 100 Level student in the Department of English and Literary Studies.

The VC disclosed that he got a security report on her case, and with the official information available, an allegation of conspiracy and robbery has been established against her by the Police.

“Ahiante Victory Ehiremen’s alleged involvement in a criminal act is in violation of her matriculation oath. She has made a written statement which the University has considered alongside the available intelligence report.

“The University authorities have therefore decided that Ms Ahiante Victory Ehiremen is hereby placed on indefinite suspension in line with regulations guiding studentship pending the determination of her case according the law of the Federation.”

Patient kills doctor treating him

Larry Pickens, left, and Dr. Benjamin Mauck. (Collierville Police Department; Campbell Clinic)

A surgeon in Tennessee was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon while inside the building where he practiced his profession, and police say the killer was a patient at the doctor’s office “for several hours” before the slaying.

Larry Pickens, 29, stands accused of one count each of murder in the first degree and aggravated assault for the death of Dr. Benjamin Mauck, 43, an orthopedic surgeon who was killed in an exam room at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Collierville, about 30 miles east of Memphis.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on July 11. Mauck was found with gunshot wounds to his neck, chest, and abdomen, according to a police report obtained by Memphis-based NBC affiliate WMC.

Law enforcement said the clinic was crowded when the inexplicable violence broke out.

“There were many patients that were there, employees,” Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“This appears to be a one-on-one interaction,” the police chief continued, stressing that this was not a mass shooting-like incident.

In a press release, the Collierville Police Department said they had never arrested Pickens, from Memphis, before but were checking with other agencies to see if he has a criminal record.

Pickens ran from the clinic after the shooting, police said. He was allegedly apprehended about five minutes after law enforcement arrived, Lane said. Officers arrived at the clinic within three minutes of the first 911 call.

He was apprehended with the handgun used to kill Mauck in his possession, though the gun was not in his hand at the time of his arrest, Lane clarified at the press conference. The police report says he was arrested on Poplar Avenue with his un-chambered pistol and two empty magazines in a backpack.

“We’re talking about a guy that ran from a shooting scene, and he’s in custody within five minutes, without additional loss of life,” the police chief said.

An unidentified witness told local CBS affiliate WREG that the shooter had threatened Mauck for a week before the shooting.

No details about those alleged threats have been made public. During the Tuesday press conference, Lane said he was unaware of such claims.

Law enforcement was initially reticent to release information about the victim, citing the interests of his surviving family and co-workers.

“It’s bad. It’s horrific. It’s terrible, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” the police chief said. “We have made notification to them. We are going to continue to pray for them.”

Dr. Mauck was identified by his employers a short time after he died.

“Earlier today, we experienced a single shooter event inside our Collierville clinic,” Campbell Clinic said in a statement released after the shooting. “We are shocked and heartbroken to confirm the incident resulted in the tragic loss of one of our highly respected and beloved physicians, Dr. Ben Mauck. We ask that you please lift his family in prayer.”

Mauck also worked as a surgeon at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in downtown Memphis.

“Ben was a friend to so many of us – a respected member of our Le Bonheur family, a beloved colleague and a dedicated physician to so many patients,” the hospital’s surgeon-in-chief, Dr. Trey Eubanks, said. “We already miss him. His death is an unthinkable tragedy, and I am at a loss at what to say. I am so sorry to those who loved and knew him, for those who worked alongside him every day.”

According to his biography, the doctor graduated from Lambuth University and the University of Tennessee-Memphis. He did his residency at the University of Tennessee’s Campbell Clinic and was a fellow in hand medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

“We are sad to share with you the passing of one of our members, Benjamin Mauck, MD,” the Memphis Medical Society said in a statement. “Ben was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, and physician colleague. He was a highly skilled hand, wrist, and elbow surgeon. His untimely death is a devastating loss for our healthcare community, and we honor and appreciate his service to the patients of Shelby County.”

The suspect is being detained on $1.2 million bond. He is slated to appear in court on Thursday.

A woman is currently battling with her life in a hospital in Makurdi, Benue State after she was brutalised by her husband, Emma Kwaghgbe, said to be a house agent.

“Neighbours have confirmed that he wakes up everyday without giving them food and leave the house to his side chicks house, then come back home very late just to wake the children up and flog the hell out of them.

“This was what he did to his wife last night just because of Nyam I bam. Why on earth will a man beat his wife to this level? What is her crime?
