ACVPN, DOHS Podcast takes " Speak Up Against Sexual and Gender-based Violence," campaign to Lagos Community
The Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN) in partnership with the ‘Document Our History Podcast,’ (DOHS) will on the 27th of August 2022, carry out a sensitisation programme in the Abule-Odu community, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Mr. Ebenezer Co-founder/Chief Operating Officer ACVPN said the programme is timely and in response to escalating cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) reports in the Abule-Odu community.
According to ACVPN , in 2020, ACVPN attended to 216 SGBV cases, with 70% of these cases emanating from Alimosho LGA.
The local government has a high number of sexual and physical abuse cases. It also has a high number of sodomy and child neglect cases.
It was, however, discovered that most of these victims were unable to access help because of several reasons, including ignorance about their fundamental human rights. Also, there is the problem of supposed community gatekeepers, who become enablers of abuse, undermining the place of arrest, prosecution, and conviction.
DOHS host is domiciled within the community and has revealed how a victim of SGBV lost her life in the community because a safe shelter was not provided for her.
The escalating cases in the community further inform the decision of the DOHS to partner with ACVPN to employ a grassroots strategy in curbing SGBV by carrying out the sensitisation and reorientation campaign against SGBV in the community.
The sensitisation programme is key to the sustainable human development, economic growth, peace, and security of Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole.
The need for mass enlightenment is to make the community understand what constitutes domestic and SGBV cases. There is a need for continued advocacy and for legal action against perpetrators of SGBV.
To this end, ACVPN has designed a programme that will:
*Educate the next generation about what to do if they encounter abuse of any kind.
*Teach citizens how to become advocates for ending SGBV themselves.
*Create a safe space for victims to report and share their stories.
*Offer basic health checks as well as HIV testing and counselling for residents by People Awareness on Health Foundation in Nigeria (PAHFIN), another organisation affiliated with ACVPN.
*Facilitate placement of women and girls who need to be rescued and sheltered in government-approved facilities.
The event is billed to be attended by health educators, government officials with expertise on the subject matter, law enforcement agencies, and a coalition of nongovernmental organisations that constitutes ACVPN.
The chief operating officer of ACVPN, Mr Ebenezer Omejalile, who is enthusiastic about the forthcoming programme, said: “The sensitisation programme envisions that many women, children and other victims will be liberated from potential abuse in the Abule Odu community as we build a culture of, ‘See something, Say something, Do something.’ In effect, shattering stereotypes about victims shaming and stigmatisation, and instead, shaming the abuser. Therefore, the theme, ‘Speak Up Against Sexual and Gender-based Violence,’ is apt.”

Octogenarian Monarch Sentenced To Death By Hanging.
One Chief Essien Matthew Odiong with 12 Wives and 60 Children has been sentenced to death by hanging for murder by the Akwa Ibom State High Court.
The accused monarch is the village Head of Efen Ibom in Ika Local Government Area of the State and was standing trial on four counts of conspiracy, directing unlawful trial by ordeal, stealing of the motorcycle and murder of Udoma Udo Ubom.
Justice Edem Akpan for the murder of one Udoma Udo Ubom sentenced the accused to death, seven years imprisonment with hard labour for directing unlawful trial by ordeal and three years imprisonment for conspiracy with others now at large.
It was gathered that the late Ubom was accused by his brothers of being a wizard and was reported to the Village Head, who brought him before the Council, where the deceased was administered an oath to swear and prove his innocent.
The court held, “The admission of the process of trial and the decision of Efen Clan Council to administer oath on the deceased, has logically brought to the conclusion that a plastic bath on the head of the late Udoma Akpan Udo Ubom and injecting some chemical susbtance through a syringe into his buttocks by the village head, caused the death of the deceased.”
The court further held, “Having sensed the consequences of his criminal activity, the monarch escaped from the Village since 2017 and returned in 2019, when he was arrested by the Police.”
Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Akpan said the court found the accused guilty of murder of the deceased by injecting some chemical substance on him, leading to his death on 26th April, 2017.
Justice Akpan stated, “The accused had voluntarily admitted that he sat at Efen Clan Council with five other village heads and members of the Clan Council to try the deceased on the allegation of witchcraft, and the law has relieved the prosecution of the burden to prove the offense of conspiracy.”

Nnewi North LGA TC Chairman, allegedly murders wife
Anambra State Government suspends Mbamba from office over wife’s murder
Mr Mbazulike Iloka populalry known as Mbamba, the newly sworn-in TC Chairman in Nnewi North has reportedly murdered his wife Mrs Chidiebere Iloka after battering her.
The Anambra State Government moved swiftly to suspend Mbamba from office over the alleged murder of his wife after massive widespread and public outcry for justice.
Mr Mbamba as he is fondly called, has since denied the allegations, claiming his wife slumped and died instantly however, a credible source familiar with the family disclosed that the woman suffered domestic violence in the hands of her husband leading to the untimely death, with her family being aware of such incidents in the past though the woman tried to hide the true extent of the horrific abuse, till it took her life.
Another source also disclosed that Mr. Mbamba has continue to frustrate all effort of the family of the late wife to conduct autopsy insisting that his wife died a natural death, but his in-laws especially the brothers to the deceased, have not only termed MbaMba a liar but passed a vote of no confidence on his claims of innocence to the extent that they have petitioned him to their community deity as they strongly believe that the woman was murdered in cold blood, given the antecedents of MbaMba’s brutality towards her even though he has continued to insist his wife died from a cardiac arrest and blocking every insistence by the in-law for an autopsy.
From the pictures seen the deceased who is well known by many to be a very peaceful and loving personality had a deep cut on her forehead well as the glaring and fresh bruises on the side of her face as well as her back eye, not to mention that there are strong evidences and eye witness reports of the deceased usually seen with bandages and plasters on her head from time to time, which she tried to cover with wigs and other head gears
Neighbours of the deceased has asked the state government and the IGP to investigate the matter, stating that his close ties to the Governor should not be abused in shielding him from the full arm of the law and granting justice to both the woman, her family and the community at large as the incident has left everyone shell shocked
They insist Mr Mbamba has questionable character and always envious of the success and progress of the deceased especially since she was a high ranking staff of a Federal establishment, which means she was vastly more literate than MbaMba which was why MbaMba was using her bank accounts as she was the one who could read, understand and correctly interpret documents and lettered articles which made MbaMba develop inferiority complex which climaxed to the murder of his wife
With the Anambra State Government suspending MbaMba over this issue, it has given hope to the family of the deceased that indeed, MbaMba’s connections will not shield him from this terrible crime, even as Ndi Anambra insist that the Government should get to the root of the matter and make sure justice is delivered.
