Nigerian military aborts airlift of pilgrims from Maiduguri airport

Published:
Borno state Governor, Kashim Shettima
Personnel of the Nigerian military Friday aborted planned airlift of 278 Muslim pilgrims travelling on lesser hajj to Saudi Arabia from the Maiduguri International Airport.
Hours after stopping the 278 passengers from flying out of Maiduguri, the military also stopped a private chartered flight from conveying two federal lawmakers and six others to Abuja.
The intending pilgrims, according to a source at the Maiduguri airport, had earlier undergone thorough security checks and were waiting to board a MaxAir flight that was already on ground when soldiers interrupted the process.
The travel arrangement was at the instance of tour operator, Skynet International Limited, which hired MaxAir for the airlift.
The military men, purportedly acting on “orders from above” insisted that the two aircrafts would have to leave the city’s airport empty.
They insisted that the hundreds of pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia must go by road to Kano through the unpredictable Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum road, to fly out of the country.
The soldiers and their leaders, our sources said, refused all entreaties by officials of the Borno State Government, including Governor Kashim Shettima, to let the pilgrims travel out. The government officials pointed out that pilgrims carrying pocket money and moving to Kano by road from Maiduguri could be at risk given past instances of attacks along the Maiduguri-Damaturu-Potiskum road.
The Managing Director of the tour operator company, Grema Terab said his company had written letters to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and military authorities that include the Brigade command, the police headquarters and the air force authorities, who all gave it the green light to proceed with the arrangement.
He said the arrangement to lift pilgrims from the Borno state capital to the Muslim holy land was made due to the fact that previous exercises took place in 2011, 2012 and 2013 at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency in Maiduguri and yet, flights landed and took off to Saudi Arabia without any problem.
A source at the airport quoted the military personnel as saying they would not allowing this year’s Umrah operations in Maiduguri on the orders of the chief of air staff that the airport be immediately closed to commercial aircrafts.
In the same vein, the military also yesterday, barred a serving Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Mohammed Ali Ndume, alongside a serving member of House of Representatives, representing Gwoza/Chibok/Damboa Federal Constituency of Borno State from boarding an aircraft chartered by the Borno State government after an 8-seater aircraft arrived Maiduguri with some government officials it conveyed from Abuja.‎
The military ordered the plane to take-off empty, leaving behind all eight persons, including the two lawmakers scheduled to board the flight to Abuja from Maiduguri.
There was reported tension at the airport as intending pilgrims became restive, expressing their disgust over the aborted trip. The secretary to the state government, Baba Ahmed Jidda, had to visit the airport to address  the pilgrims to calm their nerves. The pilgrims later left in numerous buses driving through the night to Kano in order not to miss the flight’s inaugural slot to land in Saudi Arabia.
The ‎Maiduguri airport was reopened some months ago by the Nigerian Air Space Management Agency after it was closed down due to an attack by the Boko Haram sect  in which some Air Force jets were destroyed.
The Borno State Government, according to a government source, had on the request of NAMA, intervened with donation of high powered electricity generator along with other facilities to NAMA which were installed in January at the Maiduguri airport.
“Aircrafts have been consistently landing and taking off from the airport since January without any incident recorded. It was therefore a shocker when they callled off those two flights,” the source added.
Contacted by PREMIUM TIMES, the spokesperson to Governor Shettima, Isa Gusau, said, “The Borno State Government views it as a strange development that came at a time the State and Federal establishments needed to enhance their ties for greater cooperation in handling the affairs of Borno state”.
But the military insists the Saudi-bound flight was aborted for security reasons.
“Borno state authorities who arranged the flight were briefed on the reasons that flight could not board passengers in Maiduguri,” the spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, a major general, said. “We also offered alternative means of conveying the pilgrims elsewhere to board their flights, and we are surprised that the issue we believed was amicably resolved is now being made a media issue.”

Don calls for regionalisation of Nigeria’s security agencies

Published:
“APC is offering nothing different from PDP to Nigerians.”
A Professor of Political Science at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Aloysius-Michael Okolie, Saturday, called for the regionalisation of Nigeria’s security system.
Speaking as the guest lecturer at the third Zik’s Leadership Lecture Series/Luncheon organised by the Department of Political Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Unizik, Mr. Okolie said that Nigeria was already threatened by insecurity prior to the advent of Boko Haram; but it has been heightened by the terrorist group.
Mr. Okolie, whose presentation was titled, “Politics of Securitisation and Securitisation of Politics in Nigeria: The Boko Haram Experience,” explained that Boko Haram started as a political outfit but threw off the control of their political patrons.
Mr. Okolie noted that the sect mostly carried out their activities in states controlled by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and blamed the governors and elders of those states for failing to reveal the criminals among them to the security agencies.
According to him, every community knows the bad eggs among them and those states could not deny such.
On the other hand, he noted that there was nothing different between the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the APC was yet to offer anything different from what the PDP was offering Nigerians.
The professor also said he wondered why the president refused to declare a full state of emergency in the affected states as doing so would definitely amount to the “securitisation of politics.”
Mr. Okolie said that Boko Haram was not the only security threat to Nigeria, listing favouritism and the abuse of due process as other threats the country’s social and economic security.
Using the academic environment as an example, the university don said that 70 per cent of professors were undeserving of their positions. According to him, those that have the knowledge are often seen as security threats and denied promotions to professorship to the advantage of unqualified persons. He described the sort of occurrences as a threat to social and educational security and the reason why political scientists reject Nigerian political appointments.
“Political Scientists don’t go into Nigerian politics because they can easily see today and tomorrow. They know that touts within the government can’t tolerate them and that they will be definitely sacked because they cannot accept to be unnecessarily controlled or influenced by anybody,” he said.
Rejecting the Biafran movement, Mr. Okolie said that Igbos should be ready to face major crises if Biafra secedes because the Igbos are too selfish and greedy.
He pointed out that the Igbos fail to utilise little opportunities given to them by the government to benefit themselves and wondered how they could then manage themselves if given Biafra.
Using the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as an example, Mr. Okolie alleged that various promotions were denied to those that merited them until a Hausa man became the sole administrator of the institution.
The don concluded by urging the federal government to encourage regionalisation of the nation’s security in such a way that security recruits of various regions must be indigenes of their various areas of assignment. According to him, indigenes would be in a better position to locate and destroy bad eggs in their communities.
In his address, the Head of Political Science Department of Unizik, Makodi Biereenu-Nnabugwu, disclosed that the lecture was highly necessary considering the current insecurity in the country. He promised that the department would sustain the annual lecture.
The president of the National Association of Political Science Students, NAPSS, Unizik chapter, Emeka Omaliko, expressed his satisfaction with the successful organisation of the event and thanked the head of the department for his support.
Other highlights of the event included musical performances and the presentation of awards to some personalities. The awards recipients included Ebele Ejiofor, Effective Representation Award; Silas Ejeabocha, Outstanding Leadership Excellence Award; and Ignatius Ngini, Selfless Leadership Service Award.
In their remarks, the award recipients thanked the Unizik Political Science Department for the honour and pledged to put in more efforts.
Mr. Ejiofor, who is a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, described the award as an encouragement to serve his constituency better. Mr. Ejeabocha, the speaker of Anaocha Local Council, expressing joy over the award, called on politicians to be leaders of thought. Mr. Ngini, the immediate past president of NAPSS, Unizik chapter, said that he served NAPSS with deep sense of humility and statesmanship. He described the challenges he encountered as the association’s president as instruments of shaping his idea of leadership for a better tomorrow and thanked the department for the honour.
The event which took place at Whyte View Hotel, Ifite Awka, was witnessed by students, academics, public servants and the press.

Why I buried ex-customs official, daughter alive ─ suspect

Clockwise: Kerry, Obiagulum and Azeez
The Lagos State Police Command on Monday paraded a 64-year-old native doctor, Alhaji Olatunji Azeez, who confessed to have killed a retired customs officer, Mrs. Angela Kerry, and her 10-year-old adopted daughter, Obiagulum, on May 10, 2014.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that the decomposed bodies of the woman and her daughter were found in Azeez’s house in Ire Akari Crescent, Ajuwon Akute, Ogun State by operatives of the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad. The police subsequently marked the building as a kidnapper’s den.
Azeez, an Oyo State indigene with three wives and five children, said he was forced to kill the customs officer and her daughter after she threatened to kill him over a sum of money.
He explained, “I have been a trado-medical doctor for about 30 years, but I knew Angela over five years ago. She initially came to me for protection from family attacks. One of her friends called Lizzy introduced her to me. The relationship began to grow, and she kept patronising me for one thing or the other.
“Then, about three years ago, she mentioned her barreness problem, adding that the daughter that was with her was adopted. I was shocked. But when she told me her age, I told her it was impossible to make her pregnant. But she insisted that prophets in the churches she went had assured her she would get pregnant.”
Our correspondent learnt that Azeez later lied to the woman that she would get pregnant and collected N9m from her for the job.
Azeez added, “I did the normal concoction for her, but it didn’t work because of her age. But I collected the money because I knew if I did not, she would go to where they would collect it. After some months without result, she came to my place to complain. She then demanded a refund, but I told her that I could not repay it. She then began to threaten me. Within a month, I tried to repay N2.5m. On that fateful week, she came back for the remaining N6.5m.
“It was Saturday, May 17. She came with her daughter and insisted that she wanted her balance. She said as a retired customs officer, she could kill me if I didn’t pay back the money. Then I thought, I must kill this woman before she killed me. The hole at the back of my house was not built for killing. It was dug for drainage during rainfallss.”
Azeez added that he went to the backyard, covered the hole with a white cloth that Angela normally saw in another shrine in his house.
He said, “After we talked, we moved with her daughter to the place. I said she should kneel down on the mat with her daughter. She did so and fell into the pit with her daughter. The operation was successful because no member of my family was around in the house.
I then began to cover the pit up with sand. I poured in roughly 50 buckets of sand. The following day, I got two bricklayers to cement the portion. But I had first taken out the belongings she brought.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, stated that the police had concluded their investigations on the case, adding that the native doctor was going to be charged to court for murder.
He said, “The woman and her daughter were reported missing on May 10 at the Oko Oba Police Division by the family.
“Azeez was eventually arrested through a tracking device installed on the victim’s Toyota Camry. Azeez, an herbalist, had hypnotized the woman for a long time. He had taken over N200m from her both in cash and property. We discovered he cleverly constructed a well in his house, lured the woman with her daughter into the room, and buried them alive.
“We were able to recover the decomposed bodies of the victims from the well. We also picked their property which was buried along with them. We have finished our investigations, and he will be charged to court for murder. We will leave the rest to be decided by the court.”

Gunmen kidnap Bayelsa Commissioner’s mother, demand son’s resignation

“I think the people interested in my job as commissioner in the state are the ones behind the abduction of my mother.”
———————————
The 78-year-old mother of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Furuebi Akene, has been kidnapped.
The commissioner’s mother was abducted from the Fonibiri Community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the State at about 12 noon on Saturday.
The abducted mother of the commissioner, Patimi Akene, was whisked away by about 6 armed men at her home close to the waters in the community.
Her son, Mr. Akene, told journalists that the gunmen kidnapped his mother without firing a shot.
“My mother was in company of one of her granddaughters when the armed men arrived at about 12 a.m. and they were taken towards Southern direction of the ocean,” he said.
He said the scream of his mother for help was cut short by the gunmen who threatened to kill her and her granddaughter.
“Preliminary investigation from the movement of the gunmen showed that they know her and have been studying her. They decided to take her quietly to avoid alarm,” he told journalists.
Mr. Akene said the kidnappers contacted him on Sunday evening and demanded his resignation from the cabinet of Governor Seriake Dickson.
“Someone that I suspected to be one of the kidnappers called me and said they don’t need my money. But that I should “withdraw” from the present administration as commissioner,” he said. “I think what they are demanding is for me to resign my appointment.”
“My brother, I think the people interested in my job as commissioner in the state are the ones behind the abduction of my mother.”
When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident. He said police officers have been mobilised to comb the waterways and creeks of the state.
“The incidence of these kidnappers is only taking place at the creeks due to the terrain of the state, but we are working assiduously to ensure that the activities of these bad boys are curbed,” he said.
Saturday’s kidnap and previous ones of relatives of political office holders has made many of the public officials very apprehensive.
This kidnap is coming after last week’s abduction of the 90-year-old mother-in-law of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kombowei Benson. Her whereabouts remain unknown.
THREE NDLEA OFFICERS DIE IN OGUN OPERATION
It was a black Sunday for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as three officers were killed in a mob attack while on official assignment in Owode, Ogun State. The incident occurred during the arrest of a notorious cannabis dealer, Azeez Babatunde. Three officers Bolaji Owolodun, Rabiu Usman Kazaure and Ishaku Joshua were confirmed dead following the attack.
Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade who received the news of the death with shock vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. “It is shocking that officers on legitimate assignment will be attacked and killed by people whose interest they are protecting. I have ordered investigation into the incident and the Agency will leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators are arrested and dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country” Giade assured.
The NDLEA boss described the officers as gallant heroes of the anti-narcotics crusade. According to Giade, “these gallant heroes have paid the supreme price for a drug-free society. We shall immortalize them by punishing the culprits and sustain the fight against drug barons. The Agency will take good care of the family members whom they have left behind”.
The Ogun State commander, Mr. Bala Fagge said that the suspect they went to arrest is in the Agency’s custody and will be charged to court. “We have the main suspect in our custody and he will be charged to court soon. There is one other officer that sustained injury who is currently recuperating at the hospital” Bala added.
