A 45-year-old man who claimed to be a member of the Nigerian Hunter and Forest Security Service, Joseph Agbo, has been arrested in Lagos State over allegations of repeatedly defiling a 14-year-old girl in his community.
The
arrest was carried out by operatives of the Iju Ishaga (Red House)
Division of the Lagos State Police Command following a report by the
Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN), a child
protection group that conducted a preliminary investigation into the
case.
According to the organisation, the victim’s
mother initially lodged a complaint, prompting its representatives to
interview the teenager. The survivor reportedly made a series of
allegations, claiming the suspect lured her into his apartment on
multiple occasions, threatened her to ensure her silence, and sometimes
gave her money after the incidents.
ACVPN said it
alerted the police after establishing initial facts, leading to the
suspect’s arrest. “Our attention was drawn to the case, and we carried
out a preliminary investigation before alerting the police, who promptly
effected the arrest,” the group said in a statement.
The
case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State
Police Command in Ikeja for further investigation. Authorities also
confirmed that the survivor has been taken to a Sexual Assault Referral
Centre for medical attention and psychosocial support.
The
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the arrest and
stated that the suspect is currently in custody. She clarified that
although Agbo is affiliated with the Nigerian Hunter and Forest Security
Service, he is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force.
ACVPN commended the police for the arrest and prosecution
