In a move aimed at bridging the digital divide and expanding access to affordable connectivity, the Rotary Club of Ibadan Bodija Estate has partnered with GVA Telecommunications to roll out low-cost internet facilities for residents of Bodija and the wider Ibadan metropolis. This move which is the club’s  community economic development project will boost internet based  businesses  and initiatives in the community .

The initiative, unveiled following a strategic meeting at the club’s Bodija clubhouse in New Bodija, is expected to provide subsidised broadband access points in strategic locations, including schools, markets, and community centres.

Organisers say the project is designed to support students, small businesses, and low-income households who have struggled with the high cost of internet services.

Welcoming the GVA Telecommunications delegation  led by its  Head  Mr. Paul Williams, at the clubhouse, Chartered President Rotarian Kayode Odeleye described the collaboration as a milestone in the club’s history of impactful service.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to addressing real and pressing needs within our community,” Odeleye said. “Access to affordable internet is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity. By opening our doors to partners like GVA Telecommunications, we are positioning Bodija and Ibadan residents for greater opportunities in education, commerce, and innovation.”

Speaking on the sustainability of the project, President-elect Rotarian Anya Chukwu emphasised the club’s forward-looking vision and the importance of continuity in service projects.

“As we prepare for the next Rotary year, this initiative stands as a cornerstone of what we aim to achieve—projects that are not only impactful but sustainable,” Chukwu said. “We are committed to ensuring that this collaboration delivers long-term value, particularly for young people and entrepreneurs who depend on digital access to thrive in today’s economy.”

Earlier, President of the Rotary Club, Rotarian Victor Giwa, noted that the collaboration aligns with Rotary’s longstanding commitment to community economic development and education and ICT . He added that reliable internet access has become essential for learning, entrepreneurship, and participation in the global economy.

“This intervention is about creating opportunities,” Giwa said. “Affordable internet access will empower young people, enhance digital literacy, and open doors for innovation across Ibadan.”

Mr. Williams  of GVA Telecommunications described the partnership as part of the company’s broader effort to expand digital inclusion in underserved communities. According to the firm, the project will deploy cost-efficient infrastructure and flexible subscription models tailored to local income levels.

Residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that improved connectivity will boost online learning, remote work opportunities, and small-scale enterprises that rely on digital platforms.

Education stakeholders in Ibadan also praised the initiative, noting that many students still face challenges accessing online resources despite the growing importance of digital education tools.

Implementation of the project has already  begin in phases  with pilot hotspots scheduled for select areas in Bodija before expansion.

Community leaders say the collaboration could serve as a model for similar public-private partnerships aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and accelerating socio-economic development across Nigeria
