Police recovers Cynthia Osokogu's blackberry phone from business man arrest phone seller,driver By Patience Ogbo The saga over the gruesome death of Cynthia Osokogu has continued with the arrest of two other prime  suspects . The police also recovered Cynthia's white  Blackberry Bold 5 99100 from a business man in Port Harcourt who allegedly bought the stolen  phone from her killers. The police identified the suspects as Nonso Ezike a younger brother of Chidera Ezike one of the suspects paraded and arraigned by the police over Cynthia's death. Nonso is a graduate of Mathematics and Computer Science from the Federal University of Technology Owerri. Nonso is also said to be a second hand hand phone dealer at Ladipo Market who is  the receiver and onward seller of all the phones stolen by the internet fraudsters. After his arrest Nonso said he sold Cynthia's phone for N68,000 after he bought it from his bother Chidera for N42,000 naira. "Chidera is my blood bother. I am a dealer in London used second phones. It was Chidera who sold the phone to me. He said the phone belongs to our cousin Okwumo. I later sold the phone to a man in Port Harcourt for N68,000 "Nonso said in a statement to the police. The other suspects was identified by the police as Gideon Okechukwu a driver for the gang.  The suspects were  arrested by policemen attached to the Area E police command in Festac Town led by the Area Commander an Assistant Commissioner of Police Dan Okoro. ACP Okoro  said electronic policing led to the arrest of the suspect. Confirming the arrest of the suspects.  Confirming the arrest,the Lagos State Commissioner of police Umar Manko said "In continuation of our investigation, we arrested two men and recovered Cynthia's blackberry phone.Investigation is still ungoing to arrest others" Narrating how the police arrested the suspects ACP Dan Okoro said "during the   Investigation, I told late Cynthia's father to give me  the pin of her blackberry phone. I got the pin and started chatting with the number. During the course of  our chatting, I got to know that the person with the phone is at Port harcourt. I told him I need the phone and he told me he bought it from Lagos and the phone was sent to him via courier and he was willing to return it to the person who sold it to him. He said he would like to get his money for the phone back and I told him there is no problem. Continuing ACP Okoro stated that the phone was returned to Nonso who later brought it to the police station in company of his lawyer. On September 3rd, two men came to my office with a white Bold 5 99100 backberry phone. Immediately I told my men to detain them and they were interrogated so that was how we got to know that Nonso is a brother of one of the suspects Chidera Ezike that we arraigned". The police also arrested  Gideon  39 years old said to be the driver of the suspects. The police alleged that Gideon Okechukwu was also arrested through intelligence policing. CP Manko said "Okechukwu is believed to be the man who conveys the suspects to all their destinations. He is helping us with our investigation. The police also recovered a black Compaq 610 laptop belonging to Echezona Nwabufor Okwuomo,one of the suspects arraigned. The laptop is said to   contain  over fifty nude photographs of female victims who have fallen prey to the internet sex ring. Some of the photographs show pretty ladies tied with rope and their mouths covered with cellotape with dangerous objects inserted in their vigina. Cynthia's naked photographs also shown bites and wound inflicted all over  her body. Some of the victims were also videotaped when the suspects were having sex with the and the videos sold to phonography website.   Cp Manko said the police will not relent until all the suspects involved in the case are arrested.  He warned phone users to desist from buying stolen phones "What these people do is that after stealing this phones they will flash the phones and remove all the details of the owners of the phone that is what they did with Cynthia's phone but we got her pin which cannot be destroyed so people should be wary of the phones they buy as this can be stolen property. The suspects will be arraign in court soon" Mr Manko said.

Before she was named the spokes person for the command, she rose to become a Sectional Head of Oil & Gas Fraud Section at Special Fraud Unit (SFU) 2007 till 2012 and earned a secondment with the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters. DSP Braide as the first female PPRO in Lagos State is the 23rd person to hold such office. In this interview , she spoke on the challenges facing the police force , the role of female police officers and the need for the public to have confidence in the police to tackle crime and criminality. How do you feel being the first female spokes person for the Lagos state police Command?DSP BRIADE : I do not feel anyhow because during our days at the Academy, we were given equal training , the same lecture , the same exams , I see it as one of those things What part of the country are you from? What reaction did you get from family members and friends when you told them you want to join the Police? DSP BRAIDE: It is the usual response of No!No!No! And their reason is because they feel the police is corrupt but those people who said no yesterday are the one saying yes now. Since I became the image maker, a lot of people have been calling me to say, we do not know that people like you are in the police and they want to join the police. So why did you join the police? DSP BRAIDE: It was not my making. I really did not want to join the police but one day when I was still in school, my mother told me that she likes the police and would like me to join as a cadet officer, so that was how I joined the police .Initially, I did not like it but I am grateful now and I have no regrets about joining the police. Would you allow your children to join the police? DSP BRAIDE: yes, I will advice my daughter to join if she wishes because it is a job I respect and love so much. I will encourage anybody close to me to join the police. There is this notion that female police officers sleep with their boss for promotion, what do you have to say about that ? I do not know how you came about that information, because female police officers are hardworking and dedicated; they are also brilliant. How do you handle sexual harassment in the office? DSP BRAIDE: Sexual harassment is everywhere and just like I said about corruption. It is the weak ones who will allow themselves to be used .You are a journalist, have you not been sexually harassed ?So why point to the police . The truth is that people do not see anything good in the police so that is why they say negative things, but take the police from the stations, from the streets and from the community then you will know how important we are. These same people saying all the negative things about the police will be the first to call the police when they are in need. What is the challenge you face most since you became the PPRO? DSP BRAIDE : The major challenge I have face since I became the image maker is that my phone has been invaded. My phone rings nonstop and I have to answer it because I do not know who may be in distress: I am not complaining , I love what I do but like I said it is part of my work schedule and I am not complaining. There have been a lot of clashes in some areas ; what is the command doing to check the black spots in the state? DSP BRAIDE: Some of these things are communal clashes especially the Ilaja clash. We have APC stationed there and our marine police are patrolling the waters. We also have policemen from SARS, the Bariga anti-robbery squad, the RRS and APCs on ground to check violence in these areas. What is your advice to the public? DSP BRAIDE: The public should assist the police with useful information. They should be security conscious and report any suspicious movement to the nearest police station. HOODLUMS KILL PRINCE OVER LAND DISPUTE IN LAGOS . BY PATIENCE OGBO Barely two days after two persons were confirmed dead in a bloody clash at the Ilaja area of Lagos state over a sand dredging site, another violence , this time over land disputes has lead to the killing of one Ibrahim Balogun, a prince of Isheri Olofin community in the state . Prince Balogun, was said to have been attacked by hired hoodlums who were driving in a car while he was attempting to flee on a commercial motorcycle during the clash between residents of Idimu and Isheri –Olofin who had engaged one another in a fierce fight over landed property. The violence which started on Sunday left several persons injured while properties were also destroyed . The Lagos State Police spokes person Ngozi Braide confirmed the death of prince Ibrahim . It was gathered that violence erupted in the area on Sunday after a High court verdict in Lagos ruled that the disputed land located between the two communities at the Council Bus Stop and Arida area of the state belonged to the indigenes of Isheri Olofin. The verdict which was delivered in April this year was however appealed by the indigenes of Idimu who had been selling the land to prospective buyers . However, it was further gathered that indigenes of Isheri Olofin had stormed the area asking the residents to vacate the land as the land rightfully belonged to them. This did not go down well with the settlers in the land and a fight ensued as the settlers vowed not to leave the property they claimed they have paid millions of naira to purchase. It was in the wake of the forceful eviction led by several hired thugs that the said prince Ibrahim was allegedly killed. The violence also forced schools and several businesses in the area to hurriedly close down on Monday as the two feuding communities engaged one another with guns and other dangerous weapon. Though the police claimed there was no clash in the area, residents however appealed to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to wade into the matter in the interest of peace. " TREAT UNIVERSITIES LIKE LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL" UNIBADAN VICE CHANCELLOR University education in the country is facing mirage of challenges centered on poor funding and management . In this exclusive interview, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, MB BS, FMCOG, FWACS, expressed concern over poor. He also spoke on the “The UI glows project”, renaming of universities , while calling on the government to accord federal universities the status of a local government council . How prepared is UI to combat terrorists' threats, theft and other criminality in the country. Prof. Adewole: We have also adopted a comprehensive approach, which include networking with security agencies ,training and retaining of our security personnel, provision of equipment for campus patrol and monitoring, we are also engaging every member of the university community to be security conscious at all time. We are also at the verge of installing CCTV cameras in strategic positions on campus. The University of Ibadan is having constant electricity and water in the past one month after the students’ protest, what is different now? Prof Adewole: The twenty four hours electricity on campus is the outcome of a comprehensive approach to addressing the energy challenge in the institution. When we came on board on 1st of December,, we reengaged the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and also rehabilitated the 33KVA sub station so that the university can access electricity from his two main lines ,at Ayede and Ibadan north at Shasha. The line at the Ibadan North has been abandoned but we discovered this was a major source of electricity so we started the rehabilitation and we committed over 250million to ensure the lines are functioning. We are also made use of our four brand new generators which can produce about 8KVA . With these we also looked into local generation which is the use of the Inverter, so at night when all fail, our halls glow with the use of the inverter , University of Ibadan is the first to make use of inverter in the country. But we are not stopping on our oars as we also looking into our fourth leg of the comprehensive approach , which is renewable energy supply. With these, we can boost of twenty four hour electricity. How soon is the University of Ibadan set to achieve its target of a post graduate institution? Prof Adewole: We are looking at the next five years, for now the ratio of the postgraduate students to the undergraduates is 50/50, but we are targeting a ration of 60/40 , and in doing this, we are employing more graduate assistants, we are on the verge of building a PG library at Ajibode. We are also improving the Kenneth Dike library in order to make it visually accessible ,;also we are engaging with the private sector to build more hostels for our ladies ,we are also improving on the academics by upgrading our laboratories, lecture halls with electronic boards and teleconferencing . These are whole new areas we are working on. How will the University of Ibadan react to a name change like what the federal government did with the University of Lagos? Prof. Adewole : We will consult . We will appeal to the government because UI is a brand name and changing the name of a 63 years old man is rather too late. Man arrested for killing five months pregnat wife By Patience Ogbo A middle age man, Kola Ajibola is in the police custody for allegedly killing his pregnant wife. The incident happened at Badagry area of the state on June 6th this year during a scuffle between Kola and his wife Fumilayo , who is said to be five months pregnant before her untimely death. Family members of the deceased alleged that Kola beat up his pregnant wife and shoved her in the process. The deceased was alleged to have fallen on a hard object in the apartment and sustained a major injury which led her to bleed from the nose. Seeing the harm he has committed, Kola was said to have taken his wife to the clinic but Fumilayo, a mother of one dead shortly after and the case was reported to the Badagry police station. The elder sister of the deceased who simply identified herself as Monisola said Kola molested Fumilayo in the past. “They have quarreled in the past and Kola has maltreated his wife. Just recently, my late sister reported his behaviour to one of our uncles and Kola was called and warned not to touch her again. It is sad that he did not heed the warning as he went on to beat her despite the fact that she is five months pregnant for him; she has a 7- year -old son and he is staying with the family since her untimely death.”Monisola said. Monisola however feared that the case will not be properly investigated by the police as she alleged that officers attached to the Badagry police station are frustrating the family’s efforts in getting justice. “This case was reported to the police Badagry police station and I was surprised when a police man attached to the station who identified himself as the DCO (deputy crime officer) called me and said that if we want the case to be transferred to the Homicide department at Panti Yaba, I should go to Panti and request for the signal so that the case can be transferred. Is it my job to ask for police signal before the case can be transferred for thorough investigation? We suspect a foul play by the police that they want to released the suspect without conducting investigation” Monisola said. When contacted, the spokes person for the Lagos state police Command, Ngozi Braide said the police will conduct a thorough investigation into the death. “There is no prank here and we are not covering anything. SCIENTIFIC DATA WILL BOOST GOVERNANCE --- BY PATIENCE OGBO For Nigerians to enjoy the dividends of democracy there is the need for government policies to be centered on citizens’ needs. This was the view of stakeholders at a one day event organized by AfroBarometer Network and CLEEN Foundation to brainstorm on possible survey questions that will impact positively on the lives of Nigerians. The stakeholders were drawn from the civil society groups, the media, the government and NGOs to discuss home grown questionnaires to be employed for the 5th round of the AfroBarometer governance and democracy survey in the country . CLEEN Foundation is working with AfroBarometer as the national partner. The survey will be conducted across the country from June this year and it is aimed at eliciting responses from Nigerians on wide range of issues about governance and democracy in the country . The stakeholders added as part of Nigerian’s home grown questions should also include agitation by Nigerians on fuel subsidy ,insecurity and how government is tackling Boko haram and other insurgencies in the country, epileptic electricity , bad roads , the aviation, electoral malpractices , among others. Katty Addy, the Outreach Co-ordinator for AfroBarometer stated that the survey is aimed at improving the living conditions of the ordinary man. “AfroBarometer has been conducting public opinion survey in Africa and this survey covers a lot of issues and the assessment of democracy , and governance . This survey helps to elicit answers from the ordinary man and their voices to be heard as the data gathered can be useful in formulating policies that are people centered . This is the 5th round of survey organized every three years and this survey will cut across 35 countries . Also, this round of survey will involve home grown questions, like the issues of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, insecurity among others. The survey helps to hear the voice of the ordinary man and what they feel about governance,”Addy said. Innocent Chukwuma , the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation stated that implementing people centered polices will enhance democracy and governance in the country. .“CLEEN Foundation has been partnering with AfroBarometer for the past ten years and we involved the stakeholders so as to improve on the questionnaires and make it more organized, this way, the issues they care about are included in the questions and the survey will be carried out on specific needs.” Mr. Chukwuma added that data from the survey will be made available to the government and other stakeholders for people centered policy formulation and implementation . “The survey is important because policies should be grounded on solid data to enable policy makers to address people centered policies . Also the survey will help policy makers to evaluate the impact of the polices on the lives of the people, that way, they will know where the problem lies and how to solve it.” Chukwuma said. Reacting to the importance of a governance survey, Akingbolahan Adeniran, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos state governor on Legal Matters stated that democracy will impact lives when objective empirical data based on the citizens’ opinion are employed by the government . “The Lagos state government has used data gathered by AfroBarometer and other such data for its policies and such data have been relevant because the more scientific we are in solving our problems, the more objective we are the better for us , as these data help government to look at problems objectively and what the survey does is to give us a broad overview of where the problems lie and how to tackle such problems objectively” . This was the view of stakeholders at a one day event organized by AfroBarometer Network and CLEEN Foundation to brainstorm on possible survey questions that will impact positively on the lives of Nigerians. The stakeholders were drawn from the civil society groups, the media, the government and NGOs to discuss home grown questionnaires to be employed for the 5th round of the AfroBarometer governance and democracy survey in the country . CLEEN Foundation is working with AfroBarometer as the national partner. The survey will be conducted across the country from June this year and it is aimed at eliciting responses from Nigerians on wide range of issues about governance and democracy in the country . The stakeholders added as part of Nigerian’s home grown questions should also include agitation by Nigerians on fuel subsidy ,insecurity and how government is tackling Boko haram and other insurgencies in the country, epileptic electricity , bad roads , the aviation, electoral malpractices , among others. Katty Addy, the Outreach Co-ordinator for AfroBarometer stated that the survey is aimed at improving the living conditions of the ordinary man. “AfroBarometer has been conducting public opinion survey in Africa and this survey covers a lot of issues and the assessment of democracy , and governance . This survey helps to elicit answers from the ordinary man and their voices to be heard as the data gathered can be useful in formulating policies that are people centered . This is the 5th round of survey organized every three years and this survey will cut across 35 countries . Also, this round of survey will involve home grown questions, like the issues of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, insecurity among others. The survey helps to hear the voice of the ordinary man and what they feel about governance,”Addy said. Innocent Chukwuma , the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation stated that implementing people centered polices will enhance democracy and governance in the country. .“CLEEN Foundation has been partnering with AfroBarometer for the past ten years and we involved the stakeholders so as to improve on the questionnaires and make it more organized, this way, the issues they care about are included in the questions and the survey will be carried out on specific needs.” Mr. Chukwuma added that data from the survey will be made available to the government and other stakeholders for people centered policy formulation and implementation . “The survey is important because policies should be grounded on solid data to enable policy makers to address people centered policies . Also the survey will help policy makers to evaluate the impact of the polices on the lives of the people, that way, they will know where the problem lies and how to solve it.” Chukwuma said. Reacting to the importance of a governance survey, Akingbolahan Adeniran, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos state governor on Legal Matters stated that democracy will impact lives when objective empirical data based on the citizens’ opinion are employed by the government . “The Lagos state government has used data gathered by AfroBarometer and other such data for its policies and such data have been relevant because the more scientific we are in solving our problems, the more objective we are the better for us , as these data help government to look at problems objectively and what the survey does is to give us a broad overview of where the problems lie and how to tackle such problems objectively” . NINE Car robbers arrested . By Patience Nine robbery suspects including two brothers are in the police custody for allegedly stealing five exotic cars. The suspects were arrested by policemen attached to the Special Anti- robbery Squad (SARS) Ikeja last month following the arrest of one of the gang member in Lagos. The suspects were paraded on Tuesday at the Lagos state police command with the vehicles they allegedly stole from an Indian company Kenach Car shop at the Lekki area of the state on May 19th. The vehicles recovered are unregistered include one Fortune SR5 Jeep and two Toyota Camry and two Toyota Corolla model. Narrating how the gang allegedly stole the vehicle from the company, one of the suspects, Jerry Ambeye, a private security guard at eh company started that the police man attached to the company fell asleep and he used the opportunity to invite his gang to steal the cars. Jerry added that the vehicles were moved to Akwa-Ibom state for the receiver, one Patrick Akpan in Ikot Ekpene to purchase them for N10million. “ I was watching the police man as soon as he fell asleep, I had already told my gang to be at alert , so when the police man slept off, I called them to come out from their hiding place, and I went to open the garage for them and they drove the car out ; we would have gotten N10million if the police did not arrest us as the receiver has promised to pay us our money in cash” Luck however ran out on the gang when the Managing Director of the company Deepak Vidani, reported the crime to the police at the AREA J at Lekki and the case was subsequently transferred to SARS Ikeja .
