The Lagos State Police Command has intensified efforts to combat crime and strengthen security across the state, arresting 38 foreign nationals over suspected illegal entry while also recording significant breakthroughs against armed robbery, cultism, vandalism, impersonation and illegal possession of firearms.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, said the operations were part of the command's intelligence-led strategy aimed at preventing crime and safeguarding residents.
One of the major operations took place in Epe, where police operatives acting on credible intelligence raided a residential building occupied by a large number of foreign nationals. The raid led to the arrest of 38 individuals from Chad, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Mali, Togo, Cameroon and Ghana.
According to the police commissioner, preliminary investigations revealed that 18 of the suspects possessed valid ECOWAS travel documents, while 20 others could not provide evidence of lawful entry into Nigeria.
CP Fatai disclosed that the suspects were rescued from possible mob action before being taken into custody for profiling and further investigations. He added that the individuals would be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the relevant embassies for immigration processing and further inquiries.
The police chief also highlighted several achievements recorded by the command in June. He said operatives recovered 14 firearms, four live cartridges, an operational motorcycle, 51 mobile phones suspected to have been stolen from robbery victims, vandalised electrical cables and other exhibits linked to criminal activities.
Among the notable recoveries was an unregistered MAN diesel truck intercepted while conveying 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of suspected illicit substances. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the shipment, which investigators believe was destined for the eastern part of the country.
The command also arrested suspected cable vandals, members of robbery syndicates, cult suspects and individuals allegedly impersonating military personnel. In separate operations, police recovered pistols, locally fabricated firearms and ammunition.
CP Fatai reaffirmed the command's commitment to sustaining the fight against crime and ensuring that all suspects are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, stressing that Lagos would remain hostile to criminal elements and those seeking to undermine public safety.
