How police arrested a spiritual criminal called " Small but Mighty ".

ACP Adejobi Olumuyiwa, the Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian Police Force, recently introduced Ibrahim Shehu, an alleged kidnapper nicknamed “Small But Mighty,” detailing his extensive criminal operations. During a live broadcast covered by Voice TV Nigeria, Muyiwa revealed that Shehu, who resides with his family in Kogi State, has been linked to kidnappings and other criminal activities across multiple states, including Kano, Katsina, Niger, and Kaduna. Known for his slight build yet significant influence in his network, Shehu reportedly relied on supposed “spiritual powers” to evade capture, a belief shared by some of his followers.

Muyiwa praised the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) for their relentless pursuit in apprehending Shehu despite the challenges posed by his alleged “spiritual protections.” He commented, “I want to give kudos to the spiritual operatives of IRT for going after a spiritual criminal.” He described the arrest as a significant accomplishment, emphasizing the police’s resolve to capture criminals regardless of any claimed supernatural abilities.

Addressing the media, Muyiwa issued a stern warning to other criminals who rely on “juju” or “voodoo” for protection, stressing that no one is beyond the law. “No matter how powerful you are, no matter the juju or voodoo you have, you cannot be more powerful than the government. We will surely get you.” The arrest underscores the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to justice and public safety, asserting the reach and strength of government authority.

Man beats wife to death, injures policeman who attempted to make peace

A resident of Ogbaga road, Kpirikpiri axis of Abakaliki Ebonyi State capital, Chima Eseni has allegedly killed his wife, Ugo Chima over disagreements.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ukandu Joshua said the suspect also injured his policeman neighbour while trying to separate the ill-fated fight between him and the wife.

The PPRO explained that, “The man physically assaulted the wife. She was taken to the hospital but she gave up because of the injuries inflicted on her.

“The man is in our custody,” Ukandu said.

The couple is said to have been having irreconcilable issues before it took the life of the woman.

However, in the latest issue which occurred at the weekend in the midnight, the man allegedly hit the wife and she collapsed.

When one of their neighbours who is a policeman got wind of it, he rushed to the couple’s house. Eseni who was angry, attacked him and gave him serious injuries.

Eseni’s wife was taken to the hospital through the efforts of other neighbours and sympathisers but she passed away in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the suspect has been arrested by the police over the incident.

20 years olds attack woman in her farm, to steal her motorcycle , end up killing her with matchete cuts

According to Vanguard, Two young men in Delta State, identified as Ekene and Stanley, both 20, have been apprehended after confessing to the death of a woman during an attempted motorcycle theft in Oliogo community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

Speaking at the State Police Headquarters in Asaba, Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, shared details of the incident. Ekene explained that he and Stanley encountered the woman on her farm, where she was taking a break to eat. Stanley then removed his shirt and attempted to strangle her.

During the struggle, the woman recognized Stanley and called him by his nickname, "Aboy." Fearful of being identified, Stanley used a cutlass to strike her on the head, fatally wounding her.

After the attack, the two young men tried to locate the key to her motorcycle but, unable to find it, fled the scene. Once home, Ekene revealed the incident to his mother, who advised him to approach the local vigilante team. The vigilante members subsequently took both suspects to the police.

In his account, Ekene expressed regret, admitting he felt remorse when he saw the woman's tears, but feared intervening. Stanley, meanwhile, clarified that their original plan was solely to steal the motorcycle, not to harm her.

Police spokesperson Mr. Edafe confirmed that both men will face charges of murder and robbery, with court proceedings set to follow.

Police officer regains freedom after 11 years in detention

After more than a decade of incarceration, Sergeant Emmanuel Uyanweke, a police officer attached to the Ojo Police Division, Lagos State, has been discharged by Justice Ibironke Harrison of the Lagos State High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), who struck out his manslaughter case for lack of diligent prosecution.

Hon. Justice Harrison gave the ruling after hearing the application of the Uyanweke’s counsel, Yusuf Nurudeen, who is the Executive Director of the Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development (FPIL&D), a non-profit organisation that took up the matter free of charge.

Nurudeen explained that Sgt. Uyanweke was arrested and detained on August 18, 2013, following an alleged incident in Okokomaiko, Lagos, resulting in the death of Adams Bello. He said the suspect was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter and had been held in detention pending trial since then.

The counsel said the accused was brought before a Magistrate Court in Ebute Meta on March 23, 2015, for remand proceedings and subsequently arraigned on a one-count charge of ‘Involuntary Manslaughter’ at the Lagos High Court before Hon. Justice Akintoye on February 14, 2018.

He noted that since then, the case had experienced reassignments and delays, adding that the prosecution team had also failed to produce any witness to prove its case against Uyanweke, leading to him spending 11 years and two months in detention without trial.

Nurudeen argued before the court that the prolonged and continued detention of his client was illegal and contrary to Sections 35(4) and 36(4) of the Constitution and Section 232 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State (as amended 2021).

He, therefore, urged the court to strike out the charge for want of diligent prosecution and discharge the accused.

The prosecution counsel, I.A. Erikitola, who admitted that their witnesses were unavailable, left the matter to the discretion of the court.

Justice Harrison concurred with the submission of the defence and consequently struck out the manslaughter charge and ordered Uyanweke’s release.

Speaking on the ruling, Yusuf said, “Uyanweke’s case is a testament to the importance of diligent prosecution and the need for relevant reforms to prevent similar instances of prolonged incarceration of accused persons without trial.”

He said his foundation, also known as The Pro Bono Centre, would continue to advocate judicial and human rights reforms, as well as provide legal support to the indigent and vulnerable by connecting them with volunteer lawyers willing to render pro-bono legal services.

It is recalled that in November last year, FPIL&D secured the release of another police officer, Enejo Gabriel, after a decade of incarceration. It had earlier in 2023 secured the release of one Muideen Bilau, who spent nine years at the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre.

Police arrest suspected internet fraudsters with cow horn, casket, other fetish items, exotic cars.

Operatives of the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos, have arrested

six (6) suspects for alleged internet fraud and money laundering.

The suspects, with ages ranging between 22 and 27; are Akerele

Oluwaseyi ‘m’, Okobi Chukwunonso Daniel ‘m’, Nicholas Tijani ‘m’,

Stephen Destiny ‘m’, Ayomikun Akinsola ‘m’ and Adetayo Michael ‘m’.

They were apprehended around AIT Road, Alagbado, Lagos, based on

credible intelligence received by the Unit on their alleged involvement

in computer-related fraud such as romance scam, business email

compromise, benefit scam, credit card fraud and money laundering.

Upon their arrest, items recovered from them include a car, high-end

mobile phones worth millions of Naira, and fetish materials such as

casket, calabash of black soap, cow horn and charms.

Further investigations have also established a nexus with other

associates who are suspected of being involved in computer-related

fraud.

The suspects will be charged to Court as soon as the investigation is

completed.

REPORT: Nigeria ranks lowest in respect for the rule of law and justice among African countries

Nigeria has been ranked among Africa’s worst respecters of Rights, the rule of Law and justice in 2024.

This is according to the 2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance report released recently.

The report which covers 10 years, from 2014-2023, shows Nigeria to be the worst violator of human and civil rights, as well as showing a clear lack of justice and regard for the rule of law.

Other countries like Mauritius, Congo Republic, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Benin, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Tunisia, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Mali and Botswana were listed as African nations with the least regard for rule of law and justice.

The report looked at executive compliance with the rule of law, impartiality in the judicial system, judicial processes, equality before the law, law enforcement, property rights, and public perception of the rule of law, among other measures used in arriving at its rankings.

Rights such as media freedom, digital freedom, freedom of expression and belief, protection against discrimination and public perception of freedom of speech showed the listed countries lacking seriously.

Senegal, Tunisia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Nigeria, Guinea, Uganda, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Algeria, Eswatini, Djibouti, and Egypt are the listed countries found wanting as regards the rights of its citizens.

Nigeria has, previously, come under fire from Amnesty International and other rights groups over the gross violation of rights and subversion of justice under the government of President Bola Tinubu.
