The State Commissioner for Education, Prof John Eke, disclosed this to newsmen on Friday, while monitoring the 2017 West African Examination Council examination.
The demotion of the principals followed reports of their conduct during the 2016 WAEC examination in their schools.
Prof. Eke disclosed that out of the 20 schools indicted, five of them were public schools, while 15 of them were private schools. The principals of the five public schools were indicted by the National Committee on WAEC examination malpractices.
According to the commissioner, 35 other principals of public secondary schools were given strong warning letters, while 25 supervisors were placed on half salaries for a period of three months for their involvement in examination malpractices last year.
Fifteen private schools were sanctioned by the government based on the report of WAEC that indicted the supervisors during last year School Certificate examinations.
“The 15 private secondary schools indicted by WAEC will not present candidates for WAEC in future and will pay a fine of N100,000 each for committing the crime as a deterrent to others.
“Examination malpractice is a destroyer; it is a virus. It will rob a child of his/her destiny, the private schools have been denied one year from participating in WAEC and National Examination Council (NECO),” he reiterated.
Eke maintained that the measures adopted by the government was a long term solution geared towards curbing examination malpractice in the state.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to zero tolerance for examination malpractice, maintaining that the long term solution to examination malpractice remains adequate and effective teaching and learning in the classrooms.
Earlier in his speech, the Ebonyi State Chairman of Secondary Education Board, Mr. Emmanuel Odoh, said that the implementation of sanctions on indicted teachers would commence immediately.
