Baba Yellow, the 85-year-old man who escaped being mobbed at Somolu for molesting a girl, 14, has been transferred to the State’s Criminal Investigation Department at Yaba.
He was arrested on Wednesday by the Onipanu police division after his illicit activities with the teenager was discovered by her guardian, known as Iya Kafaya.
Sources within the Somolu community, told PUNCH METRO that prior to the transfer, plans were already in the works to release Baba Yellow on bail.
One of the sources said, “Some printers were already making arrangements to bail Baba Yellow but everything fell apart after the publication in The PUNCH. The DPO of the division changed his mind and insisted that the case should be transferred to SCID. Baba Yellow was taken to Panti last Friday.”
PUNCH METRO had last Friday published the story of Baba Yellow who had lived in the Somolu community for over 30 years and was notorious for molesting children.
Police detectives from SCID were said to have visited the Somolu community on Saturday with Baba Yellow in tow to make their investigation.
The source said, “People refused to talk with the police, instead, they brought out their cameras and were filming the entire activity. Some printers went to plead with Iya Kafaya not to insist on Baba Yellow’s prosecution. When she gave in, the printers then went to meet with those handling Baba Yellow’s case at SCID and told them that the guardian of the victim was willing to drop charges.
“They were surprised to hear from the police that it was no longer just about the victim, that it was now a case of the police against Baba Yellow. The police detectives eventually left with Baba Yellow.”
At the Onipanu market, where Iya Kafaya sells her wares, she was reluctant to speak on the matter.
She said, “We have settled everything. I am not interested in making a case.”
Although the victim was reportedly taken to the Oguntolu General Hospital for medical attention last week, the result of the test is currently shrouded in secrecy.
When contacted the Lagos State Police Public relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, she said, “Baba Yellow is currently in the custody of the police at SCID and investigation is ongoing.”
