Arresting bank officials, syndicates selling currency notes is not the solution to our suffering - Nigerians lament

Angry Nigerians have called on the Department of State Services to ensure that Nigerians do not continue to suffer and provoked to revolt against the government.

They stated this following report by the DSS that syndicates and bank officials selling the new naira currency notes are being arrested. Reacting to the arrest of the syndicates, one Toba Israel said the DSS had to go after government agencies trying to provoke anger in people to revolt and destabilise the country.

" How many syndicates can the DSS arrest all over the country? The DSS is just looking for a needle in a big house. Don't they know why those syndicates exists? They are cashing out on the government policy on the naira swap which was not well thought out by the government. The federal government is pushing Nigerians to the wall and very soon people will not be able to take it anymore. Those hoarding and selling the new notes are just opportunists. Someone or some people are trying very hard to destroy our democracy and the DSS is busy pursuing shadows".

One Benjamin Emmanuel said" I was at the queue at the ATM for two hours before I got the new cash. That is after spending hours the previous day to buy fuel. Since the government is aware that the new notes are being hoarded and sold at higher rates, then why keep frustrating us? They claimed that they have gotten 75percent of the old naira currency notes. The best thing is to call off the deadline for the old naira swap and allow people bring in the old notes to the banks without any pressure of deadline. It will stop people from hoarding the new naira notes and that way the new notes will be in circulation. When you make something scare, definitely the demand will become high and and expensive. Also , the nefarious people will take advantage of the situation and inflict more pain on the people considering the fact that we don't have a price control mechanism. Telling the DSS to arrest those hoarding the fuel, the new currency and the food is a fruitless exercise. How many syndicates can they arrest? ".

Man Served 99 Years Prison Term For Stealing Horse

A 117-year old man from Texas was liberated from prison this morning after outliving a 99-year sentence, becoming the first prisoner to do so in the history of the United States.

Grandson of one the most famous horse thief in American history, Henry William Borne was arrested by the Texas Rangers in 1919 for being part of in an important horse-stealing ring.

Borne, his father and seven other accomplices were accused of stealing over 7,000 horses and mules, including a lot of 1,735 horses destined to the American military effort in the first World War.

The eight others were sentenced to death and hanged in 1920, while Borne, who was underage when the crimes were committed, was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

Unexpectedly, the Amarillo native actually survived his sentence, which was spent in a total of 11 different detention centers.

He was liberated this morning from the Central Unit Prison, in Sugar Land, after spending almost an entire century behind bars.

Visibly emotional, Mr. Borne expressed his worries about adapting to life in the 21st Century.

“I saw a few cars once as a kid when I went to Dallas. I’ve been watching TV and I know they’re now everywhere, but I’ll have to get used to it.”

Despite his long incarceration, the 117-year old man also fears he could have difficulty adapting to a life without crime.

All I’ve ever been outside prison is a horse thief. That’s the only thing I was good at. I bet I’d still be better than most of today’s horse thieves, even at my age.”

Despite his fears, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice considers there is a “very low risk” that he will resume his life of crime.

In fact, the number of horse theft has constantly dropped over the last century and the use of identification microchips over recent years has made such crimes much easier to solve.

Punishment for horse theft can still be severe, as one woman in Arkansas was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the 2011 theft of five horses.

Anguish as POS operators charge N500 on N5000 as DSS arrests bank officials, others for selling currency notes.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has intercepted some members of organised syndicates involved in the sale of the new redesigned naira notes in parts of the country.

DSS also stated that some Commercial Bank officials are aiding the economic malfeasance.

Meanwhile, POS operators are smiling to the banks as they are making brisk business from the scarcity of the naira notes.

Our correspondent who visited the stands observed that for every N5000 cash withdrawn from the POS operators, they charge N500 as additional fees against N100 they were collecting before the rush last weekend to end the swap of old naira notes.

Also, the POS operators were observed at the Automated Teller Machines ATM of banks withdrawing huge sum of money with different ATM cards and this has worsen the long queues at the ATMs.

A resident who said he had visited two ATM points , stated that POS operators should be checked.

" On Saturday, I went to two ATM points. I had left my house before 7am and I didn't get money to cash from the POS until 6pm.When I went to the first ATM, I noticed that some people were busy withdrawing money with different ATM cards. Some had about 15 cards on them. I waited patiently for my turn but as it was about to get to me, the ATM stopped dispensing cash. I was sad. I started going about until I got to one of the banks and noticed a few people were on the queue. I decided to wait but the queue was slow. Then I noticed that the same scenario was playing out . Eventually, I got money to withdraw. However when I was heading home after paying for the ride, the bikeman collected new currency note from me and gave me old notes as balance. He said he didn't have new notes. I had to accept".

Speaking on the arrest , Peter Afunnaya the spokesperson for the DSS said ".

Consequently, the Service warns the currency racketeers to desist from this ignoble act. Appropriate regulatory authorities are, in this same vein, urged to step up monitoring and supervisory activities to expeditiously address the emerging trends.

It should be noted that the Service has ordered its Commands and Formations to further ensure that all persons and groups engaged in the illegal sale of the notes are identified. Therefore, anyone with useful information relating to this is encouraged to pass the same to the relevant authorities.

Journalist charged for alleged Cybercrime

A Nigerian journalist Agba Jalingo, has been charged for cybercrime.

It was gathered that the Cross River State government had filed a cybercrime lawsuit against Jalingo, who is the publisher of the privately owned news website CrossRiverWatch.

Jalingo told CPJ via messaging app that he is expected in court on February 14, 2023.

A two counts of Section 24 (1)b of Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act was slammed against over his outlet's June 2022 report on Elizabeth Alami Frank Ayade, the sister-in-law of Governor Ben Ayade. If convicted, Jalingo could be imprisoned for three years and fined 7 million naira (US$15,200).

"Nigerian authorities should drop their prosecution and legal harassment of Agba Jalingo and allow him to work without fear of arrest," said Angela Quintal, CPJ's Africa program coordinator, in New York. "Lawmakers in Nigeria should recognize that their country's Cybercrime Act has been repeatedly used to prosecute the press and reform it to ensure journalism is not criminalized."

CPJ has repeatedly documented the use of Nigeria's Cybercrimes Act to detain and charge journalists for their work.

The June 30, 2022, CrossRiverWatch article alleged that Elizabeth Ayade paid someone else to take an examination for her while in law school. The charge sheet accuses Jalingo of publishing falsehoods and says the publication intended to cause Ayade "annoyance, ill will and insult."

Jalingo was previously arrested on August 19, 2022, over the same article, after Elizabeth Ayade filed a defamation and cyberattack complaint to police and requested the outlet retract the report and pay 500 million naira (US$1,086,300) in damages or face litigation. As of January 26, the report remains online.

Fidelis Ogbobe, the prosecutor in the case, told CPJ by phone that he did not regard Jalingo as a journalist and said the charges followed Jalingo's refusal to retract the publication, which Ogbobe described as a "falsehood." When CPJ inquired why Jalingo was not considered a journalist and asked additional questions, the line disconnected, and Ogbobe did not respond to subsequent calls.

In 2019 and 2020, authorities detained Jalingo for nearly six months and charged him with cybercrime and other offenses. The charges were later dropped, and the regional Economic Community of West Africa court ordered Nigerian authorities to pay Jalingo compensation for his detention in July 2021. As of January 26, Jalingo said he has yet to receive any payment.

PRESIDENT BUHARI APPROVES EXTENSION OF CURRENCY SWAP BY TEN DAYS

President Muhammadu Buhari Sunday in Daura, Katsina State, approved extension of the ongoing currency swap by ten days, moving the deadline from January 31, 2023 to February 10, 2023.

President Buhari gave the approval at a meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, urging more time, discretion and order to enable Nigerians successfully change their currencies to the redesigned notes, and reduce the risk of loss, especially among the underserved in rural areas.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, the CBN Governor said the currency swap had achieved more than 75 per cent success rate of the N2.7 trillion held outside the banking system, with evident drop in rate of inflation, more stability of foreign exchange rates, and noticeable impact on security, especially in banditry and kidnapping figures.

"First, I will like to thank Mr. President for giving the CBN the approval to embark on this ambitious programme because, like I said, in the past, the CBN has not had the opportunity to embark on such currency redesign programme in last 19 years and indeed, let me emphasize, that only an incorruptible leader of the President's stature can give such approval to the CBN," he said.

The CBN Governor noted that redesigns were supposed to be every five to eight years.

"Our aim is mainly to make Monetary Policy Decisions more efficacious and as you can see; we have started to see inflation trending downwards and exchange rates relatively stable.

"Secondly, we aim to support the efforts of our security agencies in combating banditry and ransom taking in Nigeria through this programme and we see that the military are making good progress in this important task," he added.

The head of the apex financial regulator said available data had shown that currency-in- circulation in 2015 was only N1.4 trillion, while as at October 2022, currency in circulation had risen to N3.23 trillion, out of which only N500 billion was within the banking industry.

He said N2.7 trillion was held permanently in people's homes.

"Ordinarily, when CBN releases currency into circulation, it is meant to be used and after effluxion of time, it returns to the CBN thereby keeping the volume of currency in circulation under the firm control of the CBN.

"So far and since commencement of this programme, we have collected about N1.9 trillion; leaving us with about N900 billion (N500 billion + N1.9 trillion),'' the CBN Governor said.

According to Emefiele, to achieve effective distribution of the new currency, the CBN has taken some steps.

He said several meetings were held with Deposit Money Banks and they were provided with Guidance Notes on processes they must adopt in the collection of old notes and distribution of the New Notes, including directives that new notes should be loaded in ATMs nationwide for equitable and transparent mechanism.

The CBN Governor explained that the regulatory body worked with the media, print and broadcast, and the National Orientation Agency for sensitization of citizens, while 30,000 Super Agents were deployed nationwide, particularly in rural areas, regions underserved by banks and to reach the weak and vulnerable for currency swap.

To ensure compliance, Emefiele said staff members, mostly Assistant Directors, Deputy Directors and Directors in Abuja were sent to all CBN branches nationwide to join the mass mobilization campaign and monitoring programmes.

He said breaches of the programme had been reported to the EFCC and ICPC for further action.

"Aside from those holding illicit/stolen Naira in their homes for speculative purposes, we do aim to give all Nigerians that have Naira legitimately earned and trapped, the opportunity to deposit their legitimately trapped monies at the CBN for exchange," he stated.

"Based on the foregoing, we have sort and obtained Mr President's approval for the following: A ten-day extension of the deadline from January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023; to allow for collection of more old notes legitimately held by Nigerians and achieve more success in cash swap in our rural communities after which all old notes outside CBN losses their legal tender status," the Governor explained.

Emefiele said a seven-day grace period had been given by the President, beginning from February 10 to February 17, 2023, in compliance with Sections 20 (3) and 22 of CBN Act allowing Nigerians to deposit their old notes at the CBN after the February deadline.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the CBN Governor said the excuse of security threats pushed by the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, had no bearing on the swap, which had achieved compliance and recorded huge success across the country.

"I don't understand the relationship between the CBN policy and security challenges in Kano State," he added.

He noted that all new currencies had security features that make it easy for tracking to bank branches, and the process had begun to deal with defaulters and those who breached the programme.

"Even if they are CBN staff, they will be sanctioned," Emefiele warned.

Three CPs "dragging" Lagos state police command.

Controversy has arisen in Lagos police command as in less than two days, three commissioners of police have been identified as commissioner of police in the state.

A report early in the week read that according to a recommendation from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to the Police Service Commission (PSC) CP Idowu Owohunwa is being posted to Lagos and CP Frank Mba will be redeployed to head Ogun State Command.

According to the authorities, the proposed posting of commissioners of police, signed by the Force Secretary , AIG Hafiz Inuwa . Owohunwa who hails from Kogi State, holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Studies and Policing from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom.

A Chevening Scholar, he holds a Diploma in Police Strategic Management at the University of Virginia, USA. He is a graduate of the globally recognized FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, USA.Owohunwa served as PSO-IGP between 2015 and 2016, and as PSO to the immediate past IGP, Mohammed Adamu. He is still Principal Staff Officer to IGP Alkali Baba.

Mba, a lawyer and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), is an alumnus of the University of Dundee, Scotland – United Kingdom, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Law.An IVLP scholar with a Diploma in Police Strategic Management from the University of Virginia, USA, Mba is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy (FBINA) in Quantico, Virginia, USA.He holds a Certificate in National and International Security from Harvard University, USA.

He was posted as CP Border Patrol shortly after he graduated from NIPSS (National Insitute of Policy and Strategic Studies).

However ,late on Thursday, news began to make the rounds that CP Frank Mba was deployed to the Lagos state police command. While the news is still being received the Lagos State police Command in a swift reaction, refuted the news of any deployment of a new police commissioner to the state. The Lagos state command spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin said " The Lagos state police command has been inundated with requests for clarification on the status of the Commissioner of Police in the Command.

We wish to state categorically that the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State is still CP Abiodun Alabi, fdc, mnim, psc. For the avoidance of doubt, no Commissioner of Police has been posted to Lagos State.

Members of the public are therefore urged to disregard fake news making the rounds that a new Commissioner of Police has been deployed to Lagos State Police Command.

It is hoped that this clarification would halt the barrage of calls to officers of the Command which has resulted in needless distraction and waste of valuable time.

The Lagos State Police Command will keep residents and the good people of Lagos

State updated whenever the need arises.

This is not the first time controversy will arise over the deployment of a commissioner of police to the Lagos state police command. One of such saga involved the former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, in 2019 few weeks to the general elections. CP Edgal said he was stopped by the police headquarters in Abuja from handing over to the then appointed acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun. Journalists were already invited to witness his handover to his Egbetokun when he received a directive from Abuja to suspend the action.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Ebenezer Omiejalile the coordinator of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN said

"I hope this not another Dejavu playing out in Lagos State, this remind me of Former CP Edgard Saga it was back and forth until until the emergence of AIG Muazu".

Right group rescues girl ,13, with her 9 months old child from "abusive cousin" who threatened to sell her baby for N2million.

A 13 year old mother with her nine months old child have been rescued at Adeba in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos state.

Before her rescue, a source with the Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN said " Her cousin auntie said ,she will refund two millions naira for upkeep for her and her baby, or she collect the baby in place of 2millions".

Narrating how the girl was allegedly subjected to abuse by her cousin identified simple as Dora, the source said " She and her daughter needs help. She was physically abuse with razor cut over her body .She said that she was raped in her village when she was 12 last year before her cousin brought her to Lagos. Now her cousin has been treating her badly, she want to send her to the village without her baby. Or she should pay 2m that she has spent to take care of her, that's the only time she can get her baby.Possibly she has negotiated with a prospective buyer of the baby that's why she came up with the idea of either 2M or the Baby. Criminals are everywhere. Thanks to WAPA for the swift response.

lay is dangerous! For the adolescent mother and her 9months baby.

It was gathered that the right group rescued the girl and her baby and

police extract was obtained from Elemoro police station on January 24th.

The source added "The Teenage girl and her 9months old baby girl along with her elder cousin ( Alleged suspect) were all transferred to Lagos State ministry of Youth Social Development (MYSD) Alausa Ikeja.Thereafter all parties involved moved to Gender Unit Lagos State police Command, of which another extract was issued to Child Protection unit (CPU) Lagos Ministry of Youth and Social Development MYSD.The Teenage mother and her 9months old daughter were eventually taken to a government approved shelter".

The source expressed displeasure with the way the teenage mother was allegedly threatened to drop allegations of assaults.

"It was so unfortunate that that the suspect was able to brain wash the survivor overnight to change her statement.Surprisingly survivor said that she is fine that her elder cousin is taking care of her. Thankfully I had her recorded audio statement with me which I played immediately I noticed a foul play. The survivor became so confused and scared to speak.Surprisingly, Gender Unit said that there is no strong evidence against Dora (the alleged perpetrator) because the perpetrator said that she is well taken care of. Therefore the police said they need to visit the scene of crime. We demand a thorough investigation which must be followed to the latter.Together we say no to teenage pregnancy"

FPRO condemns video discouraging children from becoming police officers.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi has warned against the continual negative portrayals of agencies of government, particularly to little ones in their formative ages. He stressed that this could engender baseless hatred and antagonism against lawful institutions in the mind of children, even as they grow up.

He made particular reference to a video which trended where a man constantly rebuffed his daughter's career choice to be a police officer. CSP Adejobi emphasized that policing is a noble profession and the fact that some individuals infuse their nefarious intentions and activities should not deter but rather encourage noble individuals to join up and serve diligently and honourably.

The Force PRO acknowledged that generally, security operatives are our guardian angels who have continually shown interest and put in their best to defend the country and protect lives and property as enshrined in the extant laws of the land. He urged members of the public to do everything possible to encourage them, not to castigate them.

The Force PRO reiterated the commitment of the current administration of the Force, under the leadership of IGP Usman Alkali Baba to rid the system of recalcitrant officers and urge all stakeholders in security management, particularly members of the public, to support the Police in its quest to improve on policing services in the country.

Why Men Are Attracted To Women With Heavily Endowed Backside

A new study published in the journal “Personality and Individual Differences,” suggests that men’s attraction to women’s buttocks may be hardwired into their brains.

The study found that men who rated themselves as having a strong attraction to women’s buttocks also scored higher on a measure of “behavioral inhibition,” a personality trait linked to sensitivity to new and complex stimuli.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Steven Arnocky, an evolutionary psychologist at Nipissing University in Canada, said that the results of the study suggest that men’s attraction to women’s buttocks is “an evolved adaptation that helped our ancestors to survive and reproduce.”

Previous research has suggested that men’s attraction to women’s buttocks may be linked to their perception of a woman’s fertility.

A larger buttock is thought to indicate a woman’s ability to store fat, which would have been an important survival trait for our ancestors.

But Dr. Arnocky’s study suggests that there may be more to the story. The study found that men who rated themselves as having a strong attraction to women’s buttocks also scored higher on a measure of “behavioral inhibition,” a personality trait linked to sensitivity to new and complex stimuli.

Dr. Arnocky suggests that men who are highly attracted to women’s buttocks may be more likely to explore new environments and try new things, which would have been an important survival trait for our ancestors.

It is important to note that attraction is a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon that is influenced by a variety of factors, including biology, culture, and personal experiences. While this study offers some insight into the potential evolutionary origins of men’s attraction to women’s buttocks, it is just one piece of the puzzle.

Woman kidnaps self, daughter after killing 9 years old ward , dumps body in waste site

Parents have been admonished to look after thier children and be wary of whom they entrust thier children with.
This advice was given by the Enugu Stats commissioner of police CP Ahmed  Ammani following investigation by the  Homicide Section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (State CID) Enugu State Police Command into the case of alleged murder of 9 years old Precious James Korshima by her guardian, one Ujunwa Ugwuoke  29.

The police   arraigned Ugwuoke  in the Enugu North Magistrate Court of the State today, 19th January 2023. The suspect was remanded in the Custodial Centre and the case-file transmitted to the Office of the Attorney General of Enugu State for perusal and legal advice, through the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), on the orders of the Magistrate.
The investigation conducted into the case revealed that the suspect confessed to have, during the night hours of 8th November 2022, beaten and caused the death of the minor, who was her house-help, in her residence at Fidelity Estate, Okpara Avenue, Enugu. Thereafter, in the morning hours of the following day, she took the lifeless body of the child to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, for medication attention. However, upon getting confirmation of her death by doctors on duty, she immediately took and dumped her corpse in a refuse dump site along Ugbo-Nwagidi Village Road, Enugwueze Uno-Ituku community in Awgu Local Government Area.

Furthermore, she evaded to Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, from where she sent a false alarm claiming that the deceased, her little child and herself, were kidnapped on 9th November 2022, on her way back home from Independence Layout Enugu, where she had gone to refill her Gas Cylinder, and taken to an unknown destination. She further claimed that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of twenty million naira (N20,000,000.00) for each of them.
The suspect, however, resurfaced on 16th November 2022, claiming that the kidnappers spared her and her child's life, but shot the deceased dead. Hence, the case, which was initially reported at New Haven Police Division as a case of kidnapping, was transferred to Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command and further transferred to the Homicide Section of the State CID Enugu, upon her confessional statement.
Meanwhile CP  Ammani, while commending the painstaking efforts made by the Police Detectives to lay a firm foundation for the dispensation of justice in the case, has charged parents to be mindful of whom they, under whatsoever guise, entrust the custody and care of their children, to avoid disheartening situations of this nature.

Policewoman who slept with the **whole** department dismissed.

A police woman Maegan Hall has been dismissed over sexual misconduct. Also

4 policemen from the Nashville suburb of La Vergne in USA where Hall served have been dismissed for allegedly sl££ping with Hall a married woman while on duty. 3 other officers were suspended on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. Hall was accused of taking off her top at what the local mayor called a ‘Girls Gone Wild’ hot tub party

It was also revealed in December that she ‘engaged in a s£xual relationship’ with at least 4 male officers. According to reports, the dismissed patrol officers: Juan Lugo-Perez, Lewis Powell, detective Seneca Shields & Sgt. Henry Ty McGowan admitted to the accusations with Shields claiming he had oral s£x with Hall in the department’s gym.

The small Tennessee police station was rocked by allegations of wild sexual misconduct, after a married female officer allegedly had steamy romps with six male officers, including illicit on-duty liaisons, according to reports.

Officer Maegan Hall and her fellow law officers allegedly engaged in wild sexcapades that included sending dirty pictures, taking her top off at a “Girls Gone Wild” hot tub party, and even having oral sex with two officers at the La Vergne, Tenn., police station, WTVF TV reported.

Two other officers who are said to have had affairs with Hall - Patrick Magliocco and Larry Holladay - kept their jobs but were suspended, the New York Post reported.

The escapades were discovered after La Vergne Mayor Jason Cole received a tip-off that Hall had a threesome with Magliocco and his wife, among other claims.

Magliocco, when asked about the allegations, admitted to having sex with Hall on "numerous occasions."

The police officer added that they saw Hall and Holladay kiss at a football viewing party, and that she kissed his own wife, Amy, after discovering they had an "open marriage".Hall, who allegedly claimed to be in an open marriage herself, reportedly agreed to have a threesome with the Maglioccos despite protestations by her husband who reportedly "really wasn't on board" with the arrangement.

Magliocco added Hall had also bragged about Powell's "big black d***," and said the officer had performed a sex act on him while the two of them were on shift, according to the report.

Powell initially denied having any sexual contact with Hall but told investigators "everybody knows she has multiple partners," and named Holladay and McGowan as her potential paramours.

However he was later caught lying about being at the gym with the rogue officer and, during a follow-up interview, admitted to the affair.

Lewis Powell eventually confessed to the affair with Hall (Image: La Vergne Police Department)

Powell was then involved in a domestic disturbance with his wife, who Powell alleged "beat the s*** out of me" following the raunchy revelation.

Holladay admitted to having sex with Hall "multiple" times, while McGowan said he once went to Hall’s house with another woman and exposed his genitals.

Hall initially denied the sexual relationships with Powell and Magliocco, but eventually confessed and also admitted to having sex with Lugo at a motel.

Former officer Maegan Hall had alleged liaisons with six different colleagues (Image: La Vergne Police Department)

While Lugo initially denied the claims, he came clean in a second interrogation.

An event mentioned several times in the report reportedly saw an "intoxicated" hall take off her shirt during a "girls gone wild" party after having been "force-fed" vodka by Magliocco, before others stepped in and covered her up "to protect her".

Magliocco added he was concerned about Hall's mental health and drinking.

He claimed he once saw Hall point an empty gun at her head and pull the trigger "so she could hear what it sounded like" and said she was suffering from mental illness.

Seneca Shields was also dismissed in connection with the case (Image: La Vergne Police Department)

Lugo, Powell and Shields were dismissed for violating police procedure and lying during the investigation, as was McGowan, who was also seen choking an HR employee.

HR Director Andrew Patton, who authored the report and conducted the investigation, sanctioned the eight officers for various penalties "sexual activity while on duty, sexual harassment, conduct unbecoming of an officer, and lying during the course of the investigation."

“Pornography and offensive pictures in the workplace are forms of sexual harassment. These items are offensive, inappropriate, and can lead to a hostile work environment for other employees,” the report said.

Right groups condemn posting of CSP Ogwu to Ajiwe police station

--** Lagos CP transferred two percent of officers from station**.

Following the shooting and killing of a pregnant lawyer Bolanle Raheem on Christmas day by a police ASP Drambi Vambi attached to the Ajiwe police station, the police authority redeployed a new Divisional Police Officer CSP Adolf Ogwu who was transferred from the Bariga police station to the Ajiwe police station. It was also gathered that policemen were transferred from the station while nearby drinking joints were dismantled to forestall any form of intoxication by policemen attached to the station.

Following the redeployment of CSP Ogwu, rights groups under the auspices of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network ACVPN has condemned his posting to Ajiwe police station. ACVPN coordinator Mr. Ebenezer Omiejalile said ** The posting of this same DPO to Ajiwe Police Station is putting a square peg in round hole we say to such a costly posting.Despite several protests against this same DPO . It simply confirmed several allegations that such persons with questionable character buy their way through in other to be posted to juicy location**

Also , a right advocate Mr Okhla said ***It's not all the Ajah division police officers were posted out, just few of about 2 percent of them that were transferred. The main human right abusers and DNA corrupt ones are still within the division, the police just told the public what they wanted to hear based on public opinion, I stand to be corrected NOT ALL the Ajah police officers were posted out, let's not deceive the public**

You can no longer dismiss unmarried pregnant police women - court declares

___ Awards N5m damages to dismissed policewoman

A pregnant police woman who was dismissed last year for not being married has been awarded a 5 million damage over the dismissal

Although the court declares that her dismissal is discriminatory, she would not be reinstated due to her probatory status in the Nigeria Police Force at the time of her dismissal

A landmark judgment delivered by the National Industrial Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State held that the provision of section 127 of the Police Act and Regulation 127 which applies to unmarried women police officers getting pregnant while in service but does not apply to unmarried male police officers impregnating females while they are in service, is discriminatory against women police officers.

Justice Dashe Damulak accordingly struck out the regulation for being inconsistent with Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights which abolishes discrimination on basis of gender.

The judge also held that the claimant, Miss Omolola Olajide has a right to challenge the constitutionality of section 127 of the Police Act and Regulation 127 thereof.

Miss Olajide of the Ekiti Police Command was dismissed on January 26, 2021 by the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, for getting pregnant while being single.

She proceeded to court to challenge her dismissal on the ground that the police authorities had discriminated against her since her male counterparts are not dismissed in similar circumstances.

In the suit filed on her behalf by the law firm of Falana & Falana & handled by the Chairperson of the Women Enlightenment and Legal Aid, Mrs Funmi Falana, Miss Olajide listed the Nigerian Police Force, the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission as defendants.

In a 14 page judgment delivered today, Justice Damulak held that “the Court accordingly, finds and holds that the provision of Section 127 of the Police Act and Regulation 127 thereof, which applies to unmarried women police officers getting pregnant while in service but does not apply to unmarried male police officers impregnating females while they are in service, are discriminatory against unmarried women police offices by Section 1(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, if any law is inconsistent with the provision of this Constitution, this Constitution shall prevail, and that other law shall to the extent of its inconsistency be void.”

The Judge further held that “For the avoidance of doubt, the case of the Claimant succeeds in part only in terms of prayer B which is a Declaration that the provisions of Regulation 127 and section 127 of the Police Act which is against women police officers getting pregnant before marriage but does not apply to male police officers impregnating women before marriage is discriminatory, illegal and unconstitutional as it violates the Claimant’s Fundamental Right under Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the said provision is hereby declared null and void and struck down.”

The court however refused Miss Olajide’s application to be reinstated as a police officer for her wrongful dismissal.

The court agreed with the police counsel, Mr Tolu Abisagbo to the effect that the claimant was employed on probation as at the time of her dismissal and she could therefore not be reinstated.

The court held that, “…as a probationary staff, the claimant is not yet clothed with the garb of statutory protection so even when her termination is wrongful, she cannot be reinstated”.

“For being wrongfully denied a lifetime opportunity of serving in the Nigerian Police based on a discriminatory law and since the claimant cannot be reinstated, she is entitled to aggravated and punitive damages assessed at N5,000,000.00 (five million naira only)”.

Justice Damulak relied on many judicial authorities and particularly the case of Women Enlightenment and Legal Aid v Attorney-General of the Federation where the Federal High Court struck down the police regulation that placed a 3-year ban on female recruits from contracting any form of marriage.

Counsel to the claimant, Mrs Falana has commended Justice Damulak for his contribution to the development of the nation’s human rights jurisprudence on gender equality in the country.

She however expressed the view that the Court ought to have reinstated the police woman having quashed the illegal regulation upon which her dismissal was predicated.

How a -13- year old girl arrested a pedophile

The Leeds Crown court in the United Kingdom has sentenced one Osacpolor Jimoh, a 37-year-old man, said to be a Nigerian to three years and nine months in prison for an attempted sexual affair with a 13-year-old girl.

His sentencing had come after he was said to have pleaded guilty to five counts, including attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act.

Jimoh was said to have stumbled on the supposed teenager’s Facebook profile in May last year and later asked her for a “secret relationship with the 13 years-old girl.

Unknown to him, the supposed teenager’s profile was that of undercover detectives who specialise in exposing paedophiles.

In his conversation with the profile, Jimoh had claimed he was 19, and asked the supposed teenager questions bordering on her sexual experience.

He was also said to have sent the “teenager” explicit clips of himself and became “aggressive” when she refused to do the same.

Jimoh, who is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, was said to have arranged to meet physically with the supposed teenager in Leeds.

He also reportedly booked a two-night stay in a hotel for himself and the “teenager”.

On October 24, 2022, he was arrested by security operatives at the Leeds rail station on his way to meet the supposed teenager ahead of her purported 14th birthday.

You can't work with Kuti and be slothful or lazy. As an ace and prolific Photojournalist, he made sure I followed suit. I also had the opportunity of working with Femi when I joined NEXT Newspaper as a Photojournalist in December 2008. I remembered when I was tired of being working, when the task was hard with Mr. Gbile Osadipe, the Photo Editor. I complained to Femi a hardworking, social, friendly & fun comrade, all he had to say is continue the work. It was not a gainsaying that both Kuti and I always produced the hard copies of NEXT Newspaper on the same desk when everyone had left before Pastor Sunday came to the rescue!

How can I forget when Kuti was opportuned to cover the World cup in South Africa, he told me stories about some South Africans and Africans. Even when I too had the opportunity to secure the invite to attend the 18th Africa Journalism Conference at Wits University, Johannesburg, South Africa recently, he adviced me to be an African Man. He said I should be natural and shoot as a Nigerian, just the way I use to shoot in Lagos. He advised to get better tools. Kuti was kitted for the job! Kuti was Jovial. He loved people. I remembered when they payed double salary in a day at NEXT Newspaper, I don't know if I can still find the picture, Kuti danced 'Buga' even before Buga was introduced.

We shall all miss him!!! I pray that the Lord give his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. I miss the Photo guru and my Editor!!!

Delta CP meets with NMA, assures doctor's killers will be arrested.

The commissioner of police Delta State police command CP Mohammed Ari has received members of the Nigerian Medical Association Delta State Chapter in his office over the death of Dr. Uyi Iluobe, who was murdered in his hospital, Olivet Clinic, Oghareki, Oghara, Ethiope West LGA, Delta State on 29/12/2022.

According to a statement by the command's spokesperson Bright Edafe,

preliminary investigation revealed that on the said date, a female patient whose name and address are not known came to the hospital at about 1940 hours pretending to have abdominal pain. While the doctor was attending to her, she made a phone call to the suspects whom she deceptively invited to come and pay her bill and that she was being treated by the doctor. Moments later, the hoodlums stormed the hospital in a Toyota vehicle, entered the doctor’s office, and shot him twice in the chest, leading to his death. The purported female patient fled alongside the suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, while extending his heartfelt condolences to the family members of the deceased medical doctor and also members of the Nigerian Medical Association, reassured them that the case will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that the deserved justice is served.

Finally, it is pertinent to state clearly that the rumours making rounds that the family members of a supposedly dead patient were responsible for the murder of the doctor is completely false and should be disregarded as there is no record of any patient that died prior to the unfortunate incidence. The Command thus wishes to finally use this opportunity to seek assistance of all and sundry in our effort to lift the veil off the face of the perpetrators.

He revealed that the command has taken proactive steps to stop any abuse of alcoholic beverages in and around the station.

Doctor murdered while treating wounded patient in Delta

Suspected assassins have killed one Dr Uyi Iluobe in his hospital Olive Clinic in Oghara-eki Delta State on December 29th.

"He was in the consulting room with a patient (who is currently at large). The patient was said to have come in with severe pains and was being reviewed urgently without registration in medical records when suddenly the assailants came in and shot him dead. The lady (supposed patient) and the assassins left hurriedly in a car parked outside the hospital while other hospital staffs were all lying face down and in fear. The body of the late doctor has been deposited in the mortuary while the security agencies are making efforts to fish out his killers. Condemning the gruesome murder, the Nigerian Medical Association NMA has called on the State government and the Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Baba to arrest the perpetrators of the murder.

NMA in statement on Monday by its President, Dr Uche Ojinmah reads, “The Nigerian Medical Association received with shock and sadness the news of the murder on December 31st, 2022 of Dr Iluobe by the relatives of his patient at Oghara where his practice was based.

“The above scenario being the response of the patient's relatives to the loss of the said patient from suspected gunshot injuries can never be justifiable and they have taken violence against doctors and other healthcare workers from injuries to murder.

“It is unbelievable that in the face of a debilitating medical brain drain, the few doctors that patriotically decided to stay back and take care of our fellow citizens are being murdered by the same Nigerians.

“While we sympathise with the family of the patient that was lost, we strongly condemn this murder and call on the Government of Delta State and the Inspector-General of Police to as a matter of urgency bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book so as to assuage the pain we feel. A man should not be murdered for the selfless act of being on duty on the New Year’s Eve.

“The Nigerian Medical Association uses this medium to call on the National Assembly to make a law criminalising violence against healthcare workers. Please save our souls from wanton attacks by fellow Nigerians.

“We are closely monitoring the handling of the case of Dr Uyi Iluobe’s murder and shall respond as the need arises. Enough is enough."
