Two courts of coordinate jurisdiction, yesterday, gave contradictory rulings on Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah. While a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Jabi granted the Department of State Services, DSS, the nod to hold him for another 14 days, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos ordered the DSS to release him within 48 hours. ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads Ifeanyi Ubah Justice Yusuf Halilu extended the detention order following an ex-parte application the DSS filed through its lawyer, Mr. G.O.A. Agbadua. The agency said it filed the application considering that an earlier order the court granted it on May 10, elapsed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Ubah’s lawyer, Mrs Ifeoma Esom, has filed a fresh application asking the court to compel the DSS to release her client on administrative bail. It will be recalled that the security agency had in a counter-affidavit it filed before the court, alleged that Ubah committed economic sabotage punishable by death. The DSS, while opposing an application that sought to vacate the remand order it secured against Ubah, stated in the counter-affidavit deposed by one of its operatives, Mr. Safwan Bello, that the PMS Ubah diverted was valued at N11 billion. It averred that several efforts by the NNPC to recover the PMS it kept in Ubah’s tank farm failed as the applicant had converted it to his personal use. However, Ubah’s lawyer, Esom, has accused the DSS of surreptitiously securing an order to detain her client. Esom alleged that the agency suppressed material facts when on May 10, it persuaded the court to allow it to hold Ubah in its custody for 14 days. Another court orders his release within 48 hours However, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, in its ruling ordered the Director-General of DSS to release unconditionally, Dr Ubah, within 48 hours or charge him to court. Trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, in a fundamental right suit by Ubah, held that his detention without charge violated his rights. Ubah had asked the court to order his release. The court also noted that the DSS lied on oath in a bid to justify Ubah’s illegal detention, as he (Ubah) was arrested in Lagos and flown to Abuja, contrary to DSS averement that he (Ubah) was arrested in Abuja. Acording to the court,“the deponent to the fourth and fifth respondents, therefore, clearly lied in the face of Exhibit SSS1. This is unfortunate. It is unfortunate because the deponent is counsel on record for the aforementioned respondents. “Counsel should at all times be honest and truthful to the court and must always avoid uttering or engaging in falsehood. He is under a solemn duty not to seek to confuse the court. “Counsel is under a duty to show great respect to the court by not lying. This is because deliberate falsehood towards the judge may not only earn such counsel professional censure but he may even be committed for contempt in facie curiae. “Counsel is a under a duty to say the truth at all times and not be economical with the truth.” The 100-page judgment by Justice Idris further held that Section 41 of the Constitution and Article 12 of the African Charter guarantee to every Nigerian the right to move freely, warning that there would be dire consequences if the government continues to violate human rights. He said: “Consequently, the following orders are hereby made: An order is hereby made directing the DG of SSS and the DSS to, within 48 hours of the judgment of the court in this action, initiate or institute a criminal action against the applicants herein before any court of competent jurisdiction if they have committed any crime against the state. “An order is hereby made directing the DG of SSS and the DSS to release the first applicant from detention unconditionally if no criminal action is instituted against him within 48 hours of this judgment. “The first respondent, being the Attorney-General of the Federation, shall ensure strict and due compliance with the judgment of this court. That is the judgment of the court.” Labour begs Osinbajo to wade in Also, yesterday, the Lagos State Council of United Labour Congress of Nigeria, ULC, pleaded with the Federal Government, especially the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to wade into the dispute betweenUbah and DSS, to save the jobs of over 2000 workers. In a statement by its chairman and secretary, Tokunbo Korodo and John Odigie, respectively, ULC lamented that Ubah’s continued incarceration was undermining the job security of over 2,000 employees of the company, recalling that one of the promises of the government was job creation. According to the statement, “the continued detention of the chief executive of Capital Oil and Gas Limited without having been found guilty of the purported offence by a competent court of law smacks of a vendetta, aimed at crippling the management of Capital Oil and Gas Limited and by extension, the security of the jobs of over 2000 workers in their employment.” “Our findings reveal that this was not the first time the NNPC and the Capital Oil and Gas Ltd would do business of this magnitude together. If this is a case of a breach of contract, it should be treated as such with respect to law and due process, with regard to negotiating terms of settlement and saving the jobs of over 2000 workers including Tanker drivers and other auxiliary workers within the depot. We are also mindful of the fact that the same company, over three years ago rescued the nation from perennial fuel scarcity when other independent marketers refused to import petroleum product or hoard same, due to issue with government over payment of subsidy on petroleum products. We are using this medium to appeal to federal Government to release the chairman of capital Oil and Gas Ltd Chief Ifeanyi Ubah to pave good grounds for negotiation with the management of Capital Oil Ltd with a view to resolving all disagreement and save the Jobs of workers and the business in this depot for the interest of Nigeria Oil sector and for Nigerians.” READ ALSO: How Sheriff pushed Obanikoro to reconcile with Tinubu Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer Ugwuonye barred from practice in Nigeria CAF Confed Cup: Rivers Utd clinch 1-0 win over FUS Rabat Bola Tinubu, why now? NDLEA INTERCEPTS 5,863KG OF CANNABIS FROM GHANA AT SEME BORDER
Anti-narcotic officials with Seme Border Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Lagos have intercepted five thousand, eight hundred and sixty-three kilgrammes (5,863kg) of compressed dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis. The illicit drug consignments originating from the republic of Ghana through the water ways were seized in two separate operations at Badagry, Lagos State. Four suspected drug traffickers including a Ghanaian were also apprehended in connection with the seized drugs while two vehicles used in conveying the drug have been impounded by the Agency. The estimated value of the drugs is sixtys million naira.
NDLEA commander at Seme Border, Mr Udotong Essien said that the twin shipment of cannabis were made within forty-eight hours. The first consignment of cannabis weighing 3,525kg was discovered in a clandestine warehouse where a Ghanaian and two female Nigerians were apprehended. The suspects are a 38-year-old Ghanaian, Adoboe Nana Shelter as well as two female Nigerians Falilat Sadiq, and Mary Ige Joseph both 39 years old. The following day, the command made a similar seizure of cannabis weighing 2,338kg being smuggled in a Bus meant for distribution in Lagos. A male suspect, Bola Adigun was equally arrested in respect of the second seizure.
According to the Agency, the criminal group specialises in smuggling compressed cannabis through the water ways into the country and use yellow commercial bus in inter supply to dealers within Lagos. They also use ladies who pretend to be legitimate traders conveying their wares to preferred destinations.
The Ghanaian who claimed to be a fisherman said in his statement that he illegally imported cannabis into the country because of the anticipated financial gain involved. "I am a fisherman from Volta region in Ghana. A friend introduced me into hemp business because of the profit. The two women work with me in distributing the drug in Lagos. This is my first arrest and I promise to quit drug trafficking if released" Adoboe stated.
The NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) in his reaction described the seizures as a sweet victory against the activities of drug trafficking syndicates working at Seme border. According to Abdallah, "I am very pleased with the latest seizure by Seme border command. The illicit activities of the criminal group has been closely monitored by undercover officers until it was expedient to intercept the drugs. This is a sweet victory for the Agency and a demonstration of our capacity to dislodge drug trafficking groups in the country".
We are taking legal steps to sanction those arrested for smuggling the drugs and also forfeit both the warehouse and vehicles used in conveying the drugs. These are essential elements in ensuring absolute dismantling of drug trafficking cartels. Let me warn that the entire border and water ways are under our watch to uncover drug smuggling and prosecute offenders in accordance with the NDLEA Act.
The NDLEA boss urged security agencies to collaborate towards a common goal of enhancing national security. He also called on members of the public to report suspected drug activities in their neighbourhood to the Agency for prompt action.
All the suspects will soon be charged to court.

Pastor nabbed for allegedly raping 16 years old Ward
Pastor arrested for allegedly raping 16 years old Ward , By Evelyn Usman & Onozure Dania LAGOS—Scriptural assertions of wolves in sheep clothing resurfaced yesterday, following a startling revelation by a 16-year-old Senior Secondary School, SSS, I student, on how she has been subjected to sexual violations since she was 10 years by a pastor at the Egbe branch of a popular new generation pentecostal church. The victim, who spoke from the hospital bed around Ikotun area of the state, alleged that the suspect, with the connivance of a medical doctor, had carried out four abortions on her without her consent. Trouble, as gathered, started for the teenager after the demise of her parents six years ago. An uncle she identified simply as George, took her to Delta State from where the suspect, who had just been separated from his wife, took her to Lagos to look after his child, with a promise to train her in school. That was when he allegedly started a sexual relationship with her in his three-bedroom flat at 6, Dolamo Street, Agodo-Egbe. The victim alleged that whenever he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her, he would invite her to his bedroom and offer her some drugs after which she would lose her memory. According to her, “he usually invited me to bring water to his room at night. Thereafter, he would give me some drugs. But when I summoned courage to ask him one day, he said that the drugs was to make me sexually active. ‘No one believed me’ “I have waited for this day when I would be free from his claws. The first time I opened up to our branch’s Senior Pastor and his wife, I was hushed. They even said I wanted to tarnish my guardian’s image, despite all he had done to keep me in school. “Again, I reported the sexual molestation to some of my school teachers, but they said they did not know how to go about it and how to prove my claim. They were even afraid that I could be driven away from the house and that it would mean the end of my education. “This is my fourth pregnancy he has aborted. When he took me to the doctor that has been carrying out the abortion on me, the doctor refused, saying he had been doing it right from when I was 10 years. “The doctor opened up to me that there could be complications if the pregnancy was terminated. “He took me to another place that looked like a laboratory on Monday, where I was laid on a slab. I begged the doctor not to do anything, but they pinned me down and the doctor induced me to sleep. “When I woke up, I discovered that they had flushed out the pregnancy.” She added that when they got home that night, the suspect attempted to sleep with her again, but she refused, adding that the next day (Tuesday), she packed her belongings out of the house and headed for school where she intended to be living. Abortion by quack It was while heading to the school that she slumped, bleeding from her private part. Sympathisers rushed her to a hospital along Isolo-Mushin Road, where it was discovered that the abortion was not properly done. Continuing in tears, the teenager said: “The hospital bed I laid on was soaked with blood. The attention of a church member, who is also a family friend of my guardian, was invited. When the result of the scan came out, it revealed that the abortion was not properly done.” At 7p.m., yesterday, the victim was still been attended to at the hospital. A nurse at the hospital, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the teenager was in a stable condition. Meanwhile, her guardian, who she calls Daddy, has been arrested by policemen at Area ‘M’ and has admitted to the girl’s claims. Investigations, according to police sources, were still ongoing. Curbing rapists in school uniform.
scoundrels in school uniforms, who descended on female students with the raw intent of raping them publicly. Motorists and passers-by watched in shock as male students from secondary schools in the Ikoyi axis of Lagos sexually assaulted girls from Falomo Senior High School. It was a display of mid-day madness by the boys who were celebrating the completion of their West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with wild excitement. In an unpremeditated act of gangsterism, one of the boys tried to force himself on a girl wrestled to the ground while others cheered. Another victim who was at the mercy of two other boys had her skirt ripped open with a pair of scissors as the randy lads lurched at her from the front and the rear. It took the bold intervention of a concerned woman before the girl fought herself free. The sheer barbarity of the rampaging students created pandemonium in the area. The Lagos State Ministry of Education’s swift reaction led to the arrest of four of the students involved who are now facing prosecution. The strange criminal action of the schoolboys was a reflection of the moral rot that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society over the years. On a larger scale, the issue is multidimensional because it indexes the failure of parenting, the public school system and society’s core moral values. It offends our collective sensibility. The obscene incident also raises a fundamental question on the quality of teenagers the larger society is breeding and the implications for the country’s future. It is disturbing that criminality is becoming an attractive venture for the younger ones. This bizarre act must not go unpunished in order to serve as a deterrent to other students with similar beastly instincts. We urge the Lagos State Government to thoroughly investigate the matter with a view to sanitising the already decayed public school system. Misfits and delinquents among the lot should be flushed out and taken to social rehabilitation centres or remand homes so that they will not constitute a threat to the society. The case of those already arraigned should be diligently prosecuted and the offenders, if found guilty, should feel the full weight of the law . After all, those who do the crime must do the term. We commend the rare courage and motherly protectiveness displayed by Mrs Michele Matthew, who stood up to the depraved boys at the risk of her personal safety. We condemn the attitude of security guards around the crime scene who were recording the despicable act with mobile phones instead of doing their duties. They should be severely sanctioned. Herbalist nabbed over alleged N4million fraud
A 47 years old man Abiodun David has been areested by the Zonal Intervention Squad, ZIS, of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding a US-based Nigerian of N4 million for the preparation of charms that would enable the latter progress. Vanguard gathered that the US-based Nigerian, identified simply as Kazeem, who works as a cab driver, met the herbalist when he visited Nigeria last year. During his brief stay, he reportedly received PIN numbers of a recharge card on his phone, only to be called by an unidentified person that the numbers were sent to his line in error. By the time he sent the card back, the stranger called him back to inform him that he had discovered through spiritual means that Kazeem was undergoing difficulties that needed spiritual attention. The stranger was said to have booked an appointment with Kazeem, during which he was introduced to Abiodun David, the herbalist. Abiodun David Sources close to the victim said: “The herbalist took Kazeem to a shrine in Ogun State, where he performed the first trick of turning paper into money. The herbalist assured Kazeem that he will prepare concoction that would enable Kazeem to make progress. “The first concoction, which the herbalist claimed was to make Kazeem spiritually formidable, was given to Kazeem to eat. But when he returned to the US, the herbalist kept demanding for more money from him, aside the one he paid while in Nigeria. “At a point, Kazeem told him that he would not give him any money again because the charm did not work. “The herbalist threatened that he would turn the concoction eaten by Kazeem into poison, which would kill him. Out of fear, he resumed giving him money and the herbalist warned him never to tell anyone about their conversation.” However, the victim, as gathered, sent a text to ZIS, consequent upon which the herbalist was arrested. Suspect’s story Speaking with Vanguard while being paraded yesterday at Zone 2, the suspect admitted to have collected money from the victim, but said it was not up to N4 million as claimed. According to the Kwara State-born suspect, “I was arrested because I prepared charm of mercy and progress for a man based in USA. “I only charged him N320,000 which I collected in three instalments—N180,000, N80,000 and N60, 000. Supreme Court confirms Messi fraud sentence
Spain ’ s Supreme Court on Wednesday confirmed a 21 - month jail sentence and 2 . 09 - million - euro ( $ 2 . 25 million ) fine imposed on Lionel Messi for tax fraud, months after the Barcelona football star lodged an appeal .
The Argentina international and his father Jorge Horacio Messi were in July 2016 found guilty of using companies in Belize , Britain , Switzerland and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes on 4 . 16 million euros of Messi ’ s income earned from his image rights from 2007 - 09 .
The income related to Messi ’ s image rights that was hidden includes endorsement deals with Danone, Adidas , Pepsi- Cola , Procter & Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company .
Both Messi and his father were given 21 months in jail — sentences likely to be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non - violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years .
They appealed to the Supreme Court .
While the court confirmed the sentence for Messi on Wednesday , it reduced it to 15 months jail for his father , taking into account that his football star son had paid back the defrauded money to tax authorities .
During last year ’ s trial , Messi had argued that he trusted his father with his finances and “ knew nothing ” about how his wealth was managed.
But the Supreme Court argued that he would have known about his obligation to pay taxes on income earned from his image rights .
Messi ’ s tax fraud trial in June last year took place against a backdrop of simmering voter anger over steep cuts to health and social spending, as the government struggles to bring Spain ’ s public deficit down .

Air Force men in fresh attack against UNIOSUN students

Femi Makinde, Osogbo
Rampaging Nigerian Air Force Institute of Safety , Ipetu Ijesa , have continued their assault and brutalisation of students of the Osun State University in the town .
Our correspondent gathered that the military men later stormed the private hostels where students of the institution live , beat them up and injured some of them.
It was gathered that the airmen invaded the university campus twice on Tuesday . Not satisfied with the level of brutalisation on their victims , they later invaded the hostels and injured some of the students .
A student told our correspondent on the telephone that a 400 level student of the university, Francis Olajide Olanubi, was wounded with a machete by the irate military men .
The Dean , Student Affairs , UNIOSUN , Dr . Adebimpe Adigun , confirmed the fresh attack to our correspondent on Wednesday morning .
She said , ” They called me again that the Air Force men went to various hostels where our students live and started attacking them again . I was told that one of our students was macheted . He was taken to the school clinic for treatment . ”
Our correspondent gathered that the crisis started when some Air Force men beat and detain a student believed to be one of the Internet fraudsters in the school .
The source said , “ There are Yahoo boys in our school and they usually settle men of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad whenever they come . At times , the boys would call the policemen that they should come for the ‘ settlement . ’
“ The SARS came , as usual , yesterday but one of the Yahoo boys ran away to the Air Force institute to stay with his friends . He was accused of not contributing to the money to settle the police before he ran away.
“ His friends went to see him there and demanded that he should contribute his quotas but his Air Force friends said these boys should leave the guy . The guys also asked the Air Force men to stay out of the matter . The insult was said to have infuriated the Air Force men, who descended on the boys . One of the boys was seriously beaten and was detained .
” They beat him and detained him there. Some students , who heard of this mobilised and wanted to go there to free him but the lecturers prevented the students . The Air Force men probably thought the students were going to attack them when this was going on and they came and invaded the campus and beat up everybody. ”

Ifeanyi Ubah an economic sabotuer ---- DSS
Ade Adesomoju , Abuja
The Department of State Services has accused businessman and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil and Gas Limited , Ifeanyi Ubah, of diverting about 80 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit ( commonly called petrol ) , kept in his custody by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation .
The agency stated that Ubah shunned NNPC ’ s repeated demands for the product estimated to be worth N11 bn in order to cause artificial scarcity of the product .
READ : Ifeanyi Ubah diverted 11 bn PMS , NNPC tells court
It stated that Ubah’ s action could plunge the country into widespread scarcity of PMS and economic chaos .
According to the agency , the act amounted to economic sabotage punishable by death.
These were stated in a counter -affidavit and written submission filed by the DSS in opposition to an application by Ubah, asking a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Jabi , Abuja , to set aside an order for his detention for 14 days .
Justice Yusuf Halilu had granted the order to the DSS on May 10 , 2017 , allowing the agency to keep the suspect in custody for 14 days pending the completion of an ongoing criminal investigation against him .
The DSS ’ s lawyer , Mr . G. Agbadua , told Justice Halilu on Tuesday that Ubah was plotting to plunge the nation into economic and social crisis by creating artificial scarcity of petroleum product .
The DSS ’ counter - affidavit deposed to by one of the agency ’ s operatives, Mr . Safwan Bello, stated , “ The respondent ( Ubah) was arrested on reasonable suspicion of his involvement in the commission of crime. He converted PMS , belonging to the NNPC , kept in the custody of his tank farm , to his personal use .
“ The respondent refused to return the PMS to the NNPC after repeated demands. The PMS is worth over N11 bn. The action of the respondent is affecting the distribution of petroleum products to the populace.
“ The action of the respondent is sabotage of NNPC ’ s activities as it relates to the distribution of petroleum products . If not for the urgent steps taken by the Federal Government, the action of the respondent would have plunged the country into widespread scarcity with its attendant effect on the economy .

“ Petroleum is the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy . NNPC is a major stakeholder in the petroleum industry in Nigeria . An attack on the Nigerian economy is an economic threat to national security dimension .
“ The Nigerian populace will suffer untold hardship if NNPC is unable to discharge its statutory responsibilities, including distribution of petroleum products as well as generating revenue for the country.
“ The action of the respondent , if not checked , is capable of undermining the NNPC in the discharge of its duties . Investigation into the activities of the respondent is yet to be completed . A premature released of the respondent will adversely impact on the investigation , which is nearing completion . ”
Agbadua stated in a written address , which he adopted during the Tuesday ’ s hearing, that the alleged diversion of the petroleum product by Ubah was not only stealing , but an attempt to cripple the nation’ s economy .
He stated that the act was punishable by death under the Petroleum Production and Distribution (Anti -Sabotage) Act , 2004 .
He stated , “ The action of the respondent (Ubah) to sabotage the distribution of petroleum products is a capital offence under the Petroleum Production and Distribution (Anti -Sabotage) Act , 2004 .
“ The act of the respondent was capable of plunging the country into chaos as a result of scarcity of product had the NNPC not taken a proactive step to forestall such situation. This clearly brings the action of the respondent under the provision of the Petroleum Production and Distribution ( Anti- Sabotage) Act, 2004 .
“ The punishment of sabotage under this Act attracts death penalty. It is clear that the respondent was arrested for the conversion of the property of the NNPC . It is not just ordinary stealing , it is stealing of the lifeblood of the nation.
“ Oil is the major source of revenue of the Federal Government. Stealing of the revenue is a crime against the economic interest of Nigeria and therefore , falls within the purview of economic threat of national security dimension . ”
Agbadua stated that the gravity of the alleged offence informed why a diligent investigation was required to ensure prompt prosecution of the respondent .
He added that this was why the DSS sought the permission of the court to detain Ubah pending the conclusion of investigation .
The DSS had arrested Ubah upon complaint by the NNPC that the businessman diverted over 80 million litres kept in the tank farm of his company , Capital Oil and Gas Limited , based in Lagos .
The DSS said Ubah’ s continued detention was based on the order granted by Justice Halilu .
Agbadua contended that as against the argument by Ubah that the diversion was purely a civil case , his action was criminal and was allegedly intended to threaten the nation’ s economy .
He also justified the DSS ’ involvement in the investigation of the case , arguing that the alleged offence fell within such issues that the DSS could investigate .
He said the act was not only punishable under the Petroleum Production and Distribution (Anti -Sabotage) Act, 2004 , but also under Section 383 of the Criminal Code .
Ubah had applied to the court to set aside the detention order, arguing among others, that the court was misled by the DSS , which allegedly suppressed material facts from the court .
Arguing Ubah’ s application earlier , his lawyer , Mrs. Ifeoma Esom , prayed the court to either set aside its order of May 10 or order the businessman’ s release on the grounds that his continued detention was unjustifiable .
Esom argued that the issue on which Ubah was being held was purely civil and contractual .
She stated that provision had been made for penalty in the case of default under the circumstances of the case .
Esom stated that Capital Oil and Gas had been one of the largest “ throughput provider ” for the NNPC for a long time .
She stated , “ The failure to re- deliver is expressly stated by the contract to be a mere breach of contract , remediable by the payment of penalty to the owner . There can therefore be no issue of crime in conversion of products under a throughput contract ( regardless of the ordinary connotations of those words ). ”
Justice Halilu adjourned until May 25 for ruling .

The suspect, Emmanuel John Ugbomah, 37, from Ndukwa, Delta State, was arrested in Oshodi Oke at 12:30 a.m while trying to escape after a botched attempt to hijack an uber taxi, a black Toyota Corrolla, 2009 model belonging to one Adebisi at Oshodi – Oke, Lagos.
The suspect, in company of two other accomplices had boarded Adebisi's uber taxi in Lekki.
They reportedly told the victim they were going to Oshodi, to which he charged them N4,000. But on getting to Ikoyi, the trio told the driver to head to Dolphin where they said they were going to pick a lady friend.
According to Adebisi, “two of them came down from the vehicle and some minutes later they were back saying that the female friend was not going to join them and that he should keep driving to Oshodi - Oke.
When I was about to climb the Oshodi - Oke Bridge, one of them grabbed me from the back seat, another closed my mouth with his hand.
A gun-like object was pointed at my head and they were shouting that I should come down and come to the back seat”, he said.
He continued, “immediately I unbuckled the seat belt and opened the door, I saw some RRS policemen at the front. I screamed robbers! robbers! and ran towards them.
They immediately swung to action after I explained to them that my car was about to be stolen. They ran towards the direction of my car. They apprehended one but two escaped.”
The victim claimed his Tecno C8 phone and a sum of eighty thousand naira were missing by the time he was composed.
He identified Ugbomah as one of the suspect.

Recovered from him at the point of arrest were charms, master key and a pistol shaped device.
Sources disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that Ugbomah was not at his workshop at Marwa in Lekki as he told police in his statement.

He said , “ Some policemen came around 5 pm when the event just started . They asked a woman called Iya Aliya what was going on . She told them that it was a birthday party and they left . Around 7 . 30 pm, I was sitting with my friends outside when I heard the blaring of police sirens . Around 7 . 30 pm, I was sitting with my friends outside when I heard the blaring of police sirens . The van stopped some distance to the venue of the party and some policemen, led by the DPO , came out and started shooting . People ran helter - skelter . Many people fell into a gutter .

“ The DPO brought out a pistol and chased some people into a passage . He shot twice at them. A bullet hit Jamiu in the head , while another person , Akeem , was shot in the hand. Immediately they saw the harm they had caused , they entered their van and fled . We went to the Ijesha Police Station , but we were not allowed to make a report . We then went to the Itire Police Division , but we were directed back to the Ijesha division .
“ Nobody was fighting that would have warranted the police action . Around 9 pm , the DPO and his men came back in about five vans . Nobody was arrested .
“ This morning ( Monday ) , we were invited to the secretariat of the Itire -Ikate Local Council Development Area . We narrated what happened to an official called Mrs. Raji . She called the DPO on the telephone and he met us in her office .
“ The woman told us to excuse them. After their discussion , the woman called us in . She said the DPO told her that Jamiu had a case with the police . I was shocked . I told the woman that the boy was an apprentice and easy -going. He did not drink or smoke and had never been arrested before . The woman said I should not worry . ”
Animashaun , who was marking his 22 nd birthday , said he had yet to recover from the shock , adding that he was pained Jamiu was killed for no just cause .
“ I didn ’ t know the mission of the policemen at the venue because there was no fight . Jamiu was a decent person . He was my friend . It was the DPO that shot him , ” he added .
Jamiu ’ s brother, Taofiq Ayoade , said the victim was rushed to a private hospital in the community from where he was referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital , Idi -Araba .
“ He gave up the ghost on the way to LUTH . He was not a suspect . He was learning tailoring and was supposed to graduate this year . He was not a criminal . He would leave for his workplace around 9 am and come back by 8 . 30 pm . He was 23 . Our mother lives in Abeokuta , Ogun State . The officer that killed him must face the consequence of his action , ” he said .
Taofiq added that the deceased was buried on Monday ( yesterday) in accordance with Islamic rites .
Jamiu ’ s stepsister , Mrs. Sadiat Ogunsola , said she had been catering to the victim since their father died a few years ago .
She said , “ Jamiu would never complain or argue with you , and he didn ’ t foment trouble . He was still at home around 3 pm . He had finished his secondary school education , but could not register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination due to financial challenge .
“ We planned that he should finish his vocation this year and register for the examination next year. We are still trying hard to console the mother . Nothing can bring him back , but justice must prevail . ”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer , ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole , confirmed the raid in a text message , but was silent on the killing .
He said , “ There was an incident relating to a raid on some suspected cult members in the Ijesha area of Lagos . Arrest of a suspect has been made , while investigation is ongoing . Further details will be communicated soon . ”

A gang of assailants , suspected to be ritual killers , has wreaked havoc on a family of six in Adeke bus stop, Adamo , Imota , in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State .
The couple – Taofiq Agbaje and Simiat Agbaje , 32 , – and two of their four children , Rodiat, 10 , and eight - year -old Toyeebat , were hacked to death by the gang .
The two other siblings, Mardiya , 13 and her one - year- old sister reportedly sustained injuries.
This happened barely three weeks after another couple and their only child were murdered in Ibese Titun , a neighbouring community,
The attacks were allegedly perpetrated by members of a notorious gang called Badoo .
In what seemed to be their usual
modus operandi , PUNCH Metro gathered that the attackers gained entrance into the Agbajes’ three-bedroomed flat in the night after tearing the window net and removing some burglar - proof bars .
They were said to have smashed some objects on their victims and wiped away their blood with handkerchiefs , leaving them for dead .
Our correspondent gathered that a neighbour , who had gone to get lemon juice from the family around 6 am on Tuesday , saw the victims and called for help.
It was gathered that Taofiq and two children died on the spot, while his wife , Rodiat, and the toddler were rushed to a hospital for treatment .
The case was reported at the Imota Police Division .
Simiat’ s uncle, Adisa Ismaila , said he was at work on Tuesday when he received the tragic news.
“ On getting to the house , I met the corpses of her husband and two children on the ground . There was a big stone beside them . The gang wiped their blood with a piece of cloth . The mother and the two other children were taken to the hospital , while we buried the deceased according to Islamic rites .
“ The following day , the mother also gave up the ghost . We buried her beside them. Mardiya and her sister have recovered and have been taken to our hometown in Iwo ( Osun State ) for proper care . When policemen from the division asked Mardiya what transpired , she could not explain , ” he said .
A resident , who spoke on condition of anonymity , told our correspondent that a generator was working at the time of the attack , adding that its noise deafened the neighbours.
He said , “ Around 6 am , one of the neighbours, a woman, needed lemon for her child , who was having a stomach ache . She went to get it from Iya Mardiya ( Simiat). She saw Mardiya crawling on the passage . She could no longer talk. She pointed at their room and the woman rushed in only to discover other family members lying helplessly .
“ They used to live in the Agric area . They moved into this area four years ago when they completed their house . We call on the security agencies to please do something . ”
A community leader , who did not want his name in print for security reasons, lamented that “ there is little or no improvement , ” despite several petitions to Governor Akinwumi Ambode and some other commissioners in the state .
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer , ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole , said identities of the assailants had yet to be known .
He said , “ The command responded to a distress call from a resident and discovered that one Taofeek Agbaje and his family were attacked at night by unknown persons . As a result, Mr . Agbaje and his two daughters , between seven and nine years , died , while his wife and two other daughters , aged two and 12 years , sustained injuries respectively and were taken to a hospital . Investigations are in progress . ”

DRUG TRAFFICKING: NDLEA ARRESTS TWO GRANDMOTHERS
Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have foiled attempts by two grandmothers to unlawfully export narcotic drugs to New York, United States and Medina, Saudi Arabia. The suspects allegedly ingested one hundred and eight (108) wraps of substances that tested positive for heroin and cocaine during outward screening of passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos. The grandmothers blamed their involvement in drug trafficking on financial hardship.
NDLEA preliminary investigation revealed that this is the first time a grandmother of 60 years will ingest a whopping eighty-three wraps of narcotics. In addition, the second suspect was going to Saudi Arabia where drug trafficking attracts capital punishment. Her timely arrest at the Lagos airport by the Nigerian anti-narcotics officers have saved her from the ordeals of painful and ignoble death in a foreign country.
NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Ahmadu Garba gave the names of the suspected drug traffickers as Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy, 60, found to have ingested eighty-three wraps of heroin weighing 1.105kg on her way to the United States and Amodu Ayisat Grace, 59, that ingested twenty-five (25) wraps of cocaine weighing 275 grammes on her way to Saudi Arabia. According to Ahmadu, "Adebayo Ebunoluwa Mercy was arrested while boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight to New York while Amodu Ayisat Grace was caught trying to board an Ethiopian airline flight on her way to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The cases are under investigation".
Adebayo Ebunoluwa who sells provision at Ikorodu, Lagos said that drug trafficking was an afterthought. "I am a divorcee selling provision for survival. Things became rough and tough for me when I lost my capital due to family problems. It has been my dream to travel to the United States in search of greener pastures. My involvement in drug trafficking was an afterthought. My intention when I got my visa last year was to go and work to take care of my needs without being a burden to anyone. Everything changed suddenly when I met an old friend at a party. They took care of my travel expenses and gave me three thousand dollars with a promise to assist me secure a job in the United States. It was few hours to my journey that they brought the drugs for me to swallow. They said that it was my contribution for the kindness and money spent on my trip but it turned out to be my biggest mistake" she stated. She hails from Kogi State.
Amodu Ayisat Grace told investigators that as a muslim she was glad to travel to Saudi Arabia but her journey terminated at the NDLEA office. "I was happy when they offered to sponsor my trip to Saudi Arabia but I never knew it will end in my detention. I sell fufu (staple food from cassava) to take care of my four children as a widow and this has been very challenging. They enticed me with a visit to Saudi Arabia and a handsome reward and I fell for trick. I only swallowed 25 wraps of the drug. Unfortunately I could not get to Saudi Arabia because of my arrest" Ayisat stated. She was born in Lagos.
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) said that it is shocking and shameful for grandmothers to be involved in drug trafficking.
"This move by drug cartels to recruit grandmothers as mules is very disturbing, shocking and shameful. The moral emptiness exhibited by the suspects must be condemned by all. A situation where grandmothers have become a bad influence on their children and grandchildren is highly regrettable" Abdallah stated.
