A robbery suspect Seyi Olumide a resident of Abimbola Street at Igando area of Lagos state is blaming a mysterious power for his involvement in armed robbery.
Seyi a graduate of Computer Engineering has been arrested twice for robbery but strangely he said God’s anger is behind his ordeal.
‘ I have gone to pray twice on the mountain, I have even visited several churches with the aim of finding a solution for my stealing habit but each time I find myself going back to the same condition, please I don’t know what to do again’ he lamented.
Seyi who looked troubled over his ordeal said he did not have to steal as he can cater for his needs without stealing.
‘This is the second time this has happened to me, first I went for a vigil at Ikorodu and on my way back the following day I saw a Golf car parked, I opened the boot of the car and it dawn on me that the other door keys may as well not been locked. I tried it and discovered that the doors were opened. I tested the ignition with the keys I had in my pocket and the car started so I drove the car home. I used the car for six months, during that period I used the car for commercial purposes I was able to save N48,000 and I rented a room . My wife was not aware that I stole the vehicle ,I told her that it belongs to a friend of mine.
I continue using the vehicle I then discovered that there is money in driving and I was aspiring to make more money all these while I never knew that my friends were jealous as they were wandering how I was able to get money to buy a vehicle. One day when I returned from my driving police came to my house and asked for the particulars of the vehicle I was driving and I simply told them the truth that I stole it. It was then that it occurred to me that I had committed an offence honestly it was like a dream to me it is not my wish to do this there is something wrong somewhere. Please I need help’. He said .
S was charged to Seyi was charged to court and was granted bail with the father as a surety. Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer Jaiyeoba Joseph said the suspect was supposed to attend a court sitting a day before he was arrested for the same offence.
Olumide after the first offence did not stop at that but he fall into another trap with the urge to make more money apparently on the same belief that he was being remote controlled by some forces unknown to him attempted to steal another vehicle from a woman he helped along his street and was again caught and sent back to police cell.
He told The Moment that on a particular day along Abimbola street at Igando where he lives met a woman whom he at the end attempted to rob her of her car ‘she had an accident along our street at about 7pm of that day I assisted her to fix her bumper. I took her in that car back home that night. She pleaded with me that in case her husband asked me I should not disclose what happened to him. When we got to her house I parked the car and she requested that I should come the following day being Sunday to pick the vehicle to the panel beater to fix the vehicle which I did same. When I got I took her to the church then she asked her sister to follow me and stay with me in the car to where we went to repair it thereafter I took the car to my house to wash it and took it back to the woman in her church. All these the sister was with me in the car. When the madam came out of the church I took her back to her home. She gave me N1,000 and I went back home ’ he explained .
Police said from their interrogation he was monitoring the woman and was playing the role of a good boy unknown to her that she was dealing with a criminal.
Joseph said he was arrested when he went to the home of the woman when the occupants were not at home to rob.
According to the suspect ‘ I went to the house and there was nobody at home so I entered their house through the ceiling it was there that i saw the key to the entrance of the house . I used it to open the door. When I searched inside their rooms I found the key to the woman’s car in an envelope with the particulars of the car and I took it away. Just as I was leaving, the sister to the woman was coming into the compound he saw me and requested to know what I was holding. When she saw the keys she recognised it and raised an alarm which attracted neighbours that was how I was arrested’ he narrated .
Lagos state image maker said the suspect has admitted to the crime and he will again be charged to court.
A corporal attached to the Ifako Police station at Bariga has allegedly kidnapped a 17 years old girl Patience Isabor from her residence at Bariga.
The incident happened on Friday February 10th when the said corporal identified as Emmanuel Okoye allegedly fiercely gained entry into Patience home after shooting her elder sister Blessing four times on the cheek and on her hands.
Blessing 19, is said to laying critically ill at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja after undergoing series of surgery to remove the bullets from her body.
Blessing and her sister according to neighbours are dating the said corporal Emmanuel however Emmanuel abruptly broke up with Blessing and proposed to Patience.
Mrs. Isabor the mother of the girls had opposed the relationship of her two daughters with Emmanuel.
A neighbour who witnessed the incident but requested anonymity said corporal Emmanuel has been a thorn in the flesh of the Isabors as he was said to have dabbled into the girl’s lives dating one of them and then opting for the other at will.
“Corporal Emmanuel was dating Blessing the elder sister and their relationship had blossomed over the years but towards the end of last year, corporal Emmanuel dumped Blessing and started dating Patience; their mother was against the relationship but Patience and corporal Emmanuel continued their love until last month when Corporal Emmanuel came to meet Mrs. Isamoh that she should allow him marry Patience
Mrs. Isabor objected because she wants Patience to continue her education and she does not trust corporal Emmanuel as he had disappointed her first daughter in the past.” The source said.
The source added that corporal Emmanuel defied Patience’s mother and last week Friday he stormed the house with a back bag and his rifle and kidnapped Patience.
“Blessing was at home, this was about 7.00pm and their mother was yet to come back home, so that was how corporal Emmanuel forced his way into the house and ordered Patience to follow him, he started dragging her but Blessing said he cannot take Patience away without the permission of their mother and more so, corporal Emmanuel did not tell anybody where he was taking Patience to
As they were arguing, corporal Emmanuel brought out his gun and shot Blessing on the cheek and on her hand and then made away with Patience” the source said .
One week after, Patience is still missing and nobody knows where Coporal Emmanuel is.
The case was reported at the Ifako Police station and the Divisional Police officer of the station is said to have paid Blessing’s bill at LASUTH.
A source at the Lagos state police command said the commissioner of police Yakubu Alkali is aware of the incident and has ordered a thorough investigation into the case.
“The CP is aware of the case but the police want to keep the matter away from the press so that after twenty one days they can declare corporal Emmanuel a deserter and dismiss him quietly from the police” the source said.
It was gathered that family members recovered corporal Emmanuel’s bag and the bullets he used in shooting Blessing and has tendered them as evidence to the DPO.

“How can they say they do not know anything about these corpses? Theses are people they have not seen since 2010 and they did not bother to find out ; also what about the offensive smell that would have emanated from the decomposed bodies
there are lot of questions that need answers and we will get to the root of the mysterious deaths” An officer who do not want his name in print said.

MEN AS SILENT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
BY PATIENCE OGBO
Last weekend, a middle aged man simply identified as Ifeanyi Anasekwe, was allegedly murdered by his wife Chikodile Anaekwe following a fight in their apartment at Ago-Okota .
Mrs Anaekwe allegedly used a pestle to smash her husband's head and when the man was unconscious, she allegedly used a knife to stab him several times all over the body following her husband's alleged inability to provide money for diapers and their baby's food.
Also on February 3rd, Hadiza Abutu , a mother of one was rearrested by the police after she was granted bail by an Abuja court following her alleged role in the death of her husband , Ibrahim Abutu .
The incident happened on December 28th 2011 when Hadizat allegedly murdered her husband at their Parakou Crescent home Abuja barely one day after her husband took a second wife in Gombe state.
Mrs Abutu allegedly used a double barrel gun to shot her husband at close range in the chest following an argument.
Mrs Abutu was subsequently arrested by the police; she however claimed that her husband shot himself.
Despite Mrs Abutu’s claim that she is innocent, her late husband’s family is seeking justice as they maintained that their brother was a victim of domestic violence .
Also
Domestic violence has been viewed in many quarters as a crime against women as the media has reported overwhelming cases of domestic violence against women but very few cases of violence against men .
One of such violence against women that provoked public outcry was the gruesome death of the former Skye bank staff, Titilayo Arowolo 26, a mother of one who was allegedly killed by her husband, Akolade in their home at Isolo last year.
While Titilayo’s death was one of several cases of domestic violence against women ,investigations however reveal that violence against men is on the rise in the country and like the women , men are silent victims of domestic violence; Mr. Abutu’s death is a clear indication and a typical example of domestic violence against men.
Another gruesome case of domestic violence against men was that of Kazeem Ademoye .
Mr. Ademoye until his death was a computer expert allegedly murdered by his wife- Ngozi at their home at Magodo Phase 2, Lagos on September 16th 2011.
In her statement to the police at the Homicide department at Panti Yaba ,Mrs. Ademoye maintained that she killed her husband in self defense adding that her husband had turned into a monster after a fetish incantation in his secret room and had attempted to kill her but she miracously overwhelmed and killed him with a heavy object .
Also in November last year Mr. Daniel Iyamu a SUBEB staff and a popular entertainer in Benin city in Edo state was allegedly killed in his sleep by his wife Grace .
Mr Iyamu was said to be sleeping at their Agonse Street, Ugbihoko residence in Egor North East Local Government council when his wife allegedly used a pestle to smash his head several times killing him instantly.
Mrs Iyamu has since been arraigned but her lawyers are claiming that she is insane.
It can also be recalled that 43-year-old Vincent Omeje, would live each day grateful as he escaped being killed by assassins allegedly sponsored by his wife Chidera in November last year.
Mr. Omeje a trader was attacked in his apartment at No. 10, Awka-Etiti Street, Comfort Obot, Kirikiri, Lagos by a five man gang .
The assassins beat Omeje mercilessly with dangerous weapons and left him for death following allegations from his wife that he was seeking a divorce.
Mr. Omeje survived the attack and reported the incident to the police which led to the arrest of his wife and her brothers as the assassins who attempted to kill him.
Dr. Adeolu Olusode , a medical doctor with the Star Clinic at Ebutte- metta said domestic violence against men is a daily occurrence but such cases are not reported due to the stigma, and male chauvinism .
“Indeed there are cases of domestic violence against women but there is no doubt that men are also experiencing violence from their wives and girlfriends
The issue is that these men do not come out to tell people that they were beaten by their wives or violated by their female lovers; they even hardly tell such things to their friends due to the fact that it is seen as a shame for a man to be beaten up by a woman so due to this many men do not talk about the violence they face at home except the case had become extreme and people found out about it” Dr. Olusodo said .
Dr. Olusodo added that domestic violence is not gender based as both male and female are victims of violence in their homes .
“There have been cases where we have treated men who claimed that the injury was sustained from beating they received from women; the truth is that more women than men experience domestic violence because women are seen as the weaker sex and they can come out to speak about their suffering but a lot of men are also victims of domestic violence” Dr. Olusodo said .
Reports on domestic violence show that women are victims of domestic violence ten times the men and such violence against men by the women folk is usually viewed by experts as violent resistant or what is popularly known as self defence .
In the case of Mrs Ademoye she confessed that her husband would have killed her in his rage but she defended herself.
It is based on the instinct of abused women to defend themselves that Gloria Egbuji the Chief Executive Officer of Crime Victims foundation, a not for profit organization in Lagos state calls on the government to take women’s rights seriously.
According to Egbuji, government has not shown enough resolve in upholding women’s rights and as a result women are left to fight for themselves; a development she said if not checked will lead to multiple violence.
“ A lot of factors contribute to women being violent. When women begin to react violently its shows that they have been pushed to the wall and they have to fight back for their lives—such women would have suffered years of psychological trauma, pent up anger over abuse they have suffered in the hands of the men.
Also envy is another reason for women to become violent ,as she has a husband that is not caring for her but wasting the family resources on other women despite the fact that both the man and the woman worked for the money so such behavior by the men can make the women to become violent .
Mrs Egbuji added that statistics on domestic violence show that violence against men is “ still miniature compared to what men do to women; this is because culture impedes the fight against domestic violence; culture that says women can be seen but cannot be heard, such culture reduces women to men’s object and it is sad that the government and the law enforcement agencies are dominated by the men and so they cannot make or enforce laws that will affect them—that is why you hardly see the court prosecuting men for bigamy” Mrs Ebuji said .
Proffering solutions to the issue of domestic violence, Dr. Oni Fagbouhougbe, a lecturer in the department of Psychology at the University of Lagos said women are becoming more aware of their rights.
“Psychologically, when we look at the structure of our personality, we have the ID, the ego and the super ego. The ID is irrational, aggressive and cannot delay gratification; ego is more pragmatic, while the super ego plays a more superior role in stopping anti-social behaviour
Research has however shown that the ID is prominent in the women than in the men and that is why women are easily deceived and by nature can be irrational; but culture has contributed in controlling and taming the ID in women which teach women to be tolerant and patient; sadly our culture and values have been eroded by westernization , the internet and technology generally played significant roles in creating awareness on women’s rights and our women are now more enlightened than before.”Dr. Fagbouhougbe said.
Dr. Fagbouhougbe urged men to put the needs of the women first and refrain from abusing women’s rights.
“Men must stop taking women for granted this is because our value system has changed and they should know that they do not have monopoly of violence . Also , women need to get counseling to control their ID and other abuse they have suffered which can trigger them to becoming violent , in

BANNING OKADA OR NOT----- BY PATIENCE OGBO
More than five million Nigerians will be jobless if the Lagos state government carries out its purported plan to ban commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as okada in the state.
This was revealed by Mr. Tijani Perkis, the chairman of the Motorcycle Owners Association of Lagos State (MOALS) at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday.
The press conference which was attended by members of the motorcycle riders, State Security Service (SSS) and officers of the transport ministry in Lagos state was a forum for all the stake holders to proffer solutions to the mirage of problems involved in commercial motorcycle operations in Lagos state.
Mr. Perkis stated that commercial motorcycle is a means of transportation that should be properly recognized and sanitized by the government.
“Commercial motorcycle operations evolved as a child of necessity due to the unbearable level of unemployment in the country. From the mid 80s, okada business provided answers by becoming the source of income of over five million Nigerians, also okada came to the rescue of artisan graduates WHO have NO INCOME TO ESTABLISH A WORKSHOP,
Also during the economic recession and it attendant retrenchment, okada also came to the rescue of the teeming unemployed” Mr. Perkis said.
Mr. Perkis blames the poor state of the roads in the country, and the perennial traffic gridlock in Lagos state for the upsurge in residents’ need to patronize commercial motorcycle as a means of transportation
“Before it is “heavy hold –up”, now it is complete stand still on our roads; many man hours are lost in such traffic ,lives are lost and people resorted to using okada to ease their plight on the road”Mr. Perkis said .
In proffering solutions to the challenges in commercial motorcycle operation in the state, the stakeholders call on the government to enforce stricter penalties on traffic defaulters.
“there should be a total ban on all unrecognized okada associations in Lagos as too many mushroom associations are springing up and they are the ones causing problems. Also there should be the introduction of uniform reflectors in the name of the unions, stricter enforcement of riders card and the inculcation of training ,
the compulsory registration of every riders into parks or unit for easy identification; we submit that it is no solution to throw away the baby with the bath water as this will result to unemployment and upsurge in crime in the state. As a result, we are ready to work with the government to ensure that okada operations become safe for all but if the government insist on banning okada, then they should be ready to provide an alternatives for the riders ” Mr. Perkis said.
Reacting to the purported ban in commercial motorcycle operation in the state, Remi Thomas, the Director of Transport and Operations in the Lagos state ministry of Transportation said government is ready to work with commercial motorcycle riders through a joint task force.
“The government has held series of meetings with the okada riders and our aim is to make okada operations safe for all, we will support you if you obey the law.”Mr. Thomas said.
In order to curb the menace of commercial motorcycle riders in the state, the Lagos state government last week began a clamp down on motorcycle riders plying the high way, with over 1000 defaulters arrested.
Also governor Babtubde Raji Fashola recently arrested five commercial motorcycle riders for operating riding against traffic on the one way route.
The governor blames commercial motorcycle riders for the upsurge in crime in the state and the frequent accidents on the highway and as a way to check okada menace, the governor also reconstituted a security committee to curb the recklessness of the okada riders in the state.

Man 29 ,rapes in -law to death by Patience Ogbo
Barely two weeks after a young lady identified as Faith Akin was allegedly raped to death by a middle aged man, a similar incident has been reported at the Epe police station.
The report alleged that a -29 -years old man identified as Ime Titus has raped his in-law one Blessing John , 19 to death.
The incident happened in a forest at Epe where Ime allegedly trailed Blessing to her father’s farm where he raped her to death.
Ime said he assaulted Blessing due to her refusal to date him; he blames his dastardly act on his “great” love for the deceased.
Narrating how he raped and killed Blessing, Ime said “ I just moved to Lagos from Akwa -Ibom state to look for a job when I met Blessing. She is my in -law as my uncle is married to her elder sister. As soon as I set my eyes on her, I fell in love with her but I kept it to myself; but when I could not bear it anymore, I went to her to declare my love for her but she turned me down.I kept pestering her but she refused blatantly that she did not love me ; this made me angry”. Ime said.
Ime added that despite Blessing’s refusal to date him, he had to device a means to force her to have sex with him
“ I do not intend to kill Blessing but my feeling for her was very strong. So after monitoring her movement for some time, I discover that she goes to the farm to uproot cassava in the evening with her father. That day, I trailed her from her house to the forest , she was alone and she did not know I was following her , when she got into the dense forest and there was no one in sight, I ran ahead of her and grabbed her , and started declaring my love for her but she turned me down
I was very angry and I grabbed her dress. She started struggling with me but I took a big stick and hit her on her head, she slumped immediately and I bend down over her and removed her skirt and had sex with her; all this while, she did not respond but I still had sex with her a second time but I do not know that she was dead; I thought she was just unconscious.” Ime said.
Ime ran into the forest after raping Blessing, hid there for four days. He however came out of his hiding when he could not bear the hunger anymore and reported himself to his family who then handed him over to the police for prosecution.
Blessing’s remains were discovered by her father and has been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy while the case was transferred to the Homicide department at Panti Yaba for further investigation.

There was discontent at the Family Magistrate Court Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday as the judgement in the case of the death of some Lagosians crushed by a trailer owned by Dangote Sugar Factory was again postponed due to the absence of the judge.
The accident happened in 2010 at a police checkpoint in front of Otedola Estate along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The trailer crashed into several stationery vehicles, leading to the death of many.
Families of the deceased and lawyers who had arrived the court in high spirit expressed their disappointment when the Coroner Judge, Tajudeen Elias, did not show up in court to deliver the much-awaited judgment.
The Coroner inquest was initiated by Access to Justice and Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, to establish the cause of the deaths arising from the ghastly accident on August 15, 2010.
Elias had scheduled March 28, 2012 for the verdict.
It can be recalled that on August 15, 2010, over 20 persons lost their lives in the accident when a Dangote Sugar Refinery truck crashed into a long line of stationery vehicles held up on the Otedola Bridge by a police checkpoint.
The inquest lasted 16 months and there were 18 sittings between September 2010 and March 2012.
According to Access to Justice: "Coroner inquests are a special process of inquiring into deaths that occur in circumstances which the Law (Coroners’ System Law of Lagos State 2007) regards as sudden, tragic and/or unnatural. It entails a fact-finding inquiry by a judicial officer which results in a verdict establishing the cause and circumstances of such deaths. Access to Justice was also instrumental in facilitating the reform and revitalization of this law as a way to enhance accountability for the unlawful taking of human life by law enforcement."

Community policing has been given a boost following the training of
para -military agencies to combat crime in Lagos state.
The two day workshop was organized by the Justice For All (J4A) in
collaboration with the DFID.
More than twenty personnel from the Neighborhood Watch, Vigilantes
and other community based outfits from the Agege local government
council received intensive training from seasoned security experts
among whom is the former commissioner for police Mr. Frank Odita.
The workshop which was conducted at the CLEEN Foundation office at
Ojudu from March 26th -27th also provided the participants the
opportunity to network with the professionals on tackling rural crime
and violence .
Dr. Eban , one of the lecturers at the workshop spoke on security
and human rights stating that community based security outfits have
a vital role in checking crime and criminality.
“Security is not determined how available guns and weapons are. It is
about creating the enabling environment that will make the use of
violence unnecessary” Dr. Eban said.
Dr. Eban added that the fundamental human rights of Nigerians have
been infringed upon due to government failure to provide adequate
security.
“Security is a social contract and it is the principal responsibility
of the state through the government to provide security for all
citizens, individual, groups and corporate. In return, the citizens
give loyalty to the state as they give up their rights to secure
themselves to the state sadly there is huge outcry for soft security
which is security of the basic necessities of food , housing
,clothing , dignity, protection from poverty , exploitation, disease ,
injustice which can be ensured by proving the enabling environment
for people to get their means of livelihood,
That contract stated that if the government fails in this social
contract, the citizens seeks to regain their rights to secure
themselves (self-help) and this is conductive for anarchy and
violation of human rights” Dr. Eban said.
Speaking on practical security management skills , Mr. Odita
hailed the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed
Abubakar for dismantling the police check points while stating that
indiscipline especially at the checkpoints is the bane of the Nigeria
Police Force.
“ The “DIET” of a police man is first Discipline, if you are not
discipline, you are rotten. Discipline attracts respect. “I” is for
integrity, “E” for Enlightenment while “T” is for Tactical and with
this “DIET” any police man is ready for the job ” Mr. Odita said.
Mr. Odita also admonished the participants to carry out their jobs of
securing lives and property with human face “ Any person wearing a
security uniform is a policeman and the police officer’s first duty is
not just to carry out arrest but to prevent crime” He said.
Also Speaking on arrest and detention of suspects, Mr. Odita said
“ Arrest will involve the use of minimal force and the obedience to
respect human rights ; the force applied must be commensurate with
the force threatened.” He said.
The participants expressed gratitude to the organizers of the
workshop, while urging the government to play the leading role in
providing capacity and training for community based security outfits.
“This training will go a long way in assisting us in community
policing. The training has opened our eyes on how to effectively and
professionally combat crime in our vicinity; a lot of this training is
done by NGOs and private outfits so it is good for government to get
to the grassroots and carry out training for the local vigilante
because we are closer to the people” Abayomi Adewale, the Vice
Chairman of the Vigilante Group from Isale -oja , Agege said.
Morufu Kelani the Head of the Neighbourhood Watch at Dopemu
Agege said the workshop will assists his members to perform
their job effectively.
“ We have a lot of intelligence on black spots in out neighbourhood
and with this training, we can work effectively with the police in
carrying out our job professionally as our aim is stamping out
crime ; this knowledge we have acquired will be taken back to impact
on other members who are not here” Mr. Kelani said.
